Just keep in mind that this a political speech spoken in relatively clear Afrikaans. This would make it a lot easier for Dutch people to understand as well of course. It seems to me that it makes a hell a lot of difference what dialect of Afrikaans and Dutch someone speaks to understand the other language. Also the knowledge of older Dutch literature might help broaden the vocabulary and hence mutual understanding, but that's all from a personal perspective.

So refreshing to see that SA is now a democratic and economic powerhouse in Africa. The end of apartheid insured equality, full emolyment, black ownership of business that are now world class. It ended corruption, introduced top notch education and lifted every black south African out of poverty. The last 3 decades were a pure miracle of progress........oh hell, who am I kidding?....
When a single party has three decades of supermajority support, rot will set in because the elected leadership takes their position for granted. At least the ANC didn't try gerrymandering like, say, Texas Republicans.
Most people in the comments are not writing Afrikaans like some think - they are Dutch who (as always) are going on about about how similar Afrikaans and Dutch are.
And the rest of the world just doesn't know about the referendum of 1992. It didn't fit The Narrative that whites were willing to allow universal suffrage, so it wasn't covered. The same media that now lie through their teeth about Brexit, Trump, PEGIDA, grooming gangs, all in the service of the same Narrative.
I was just a few years old but the memories the sound of music and presenter's voice awaken is incredible. Some deep emotions too... Memories of my grandfather watching the news. Wow!!!
I’m trying to understand how Europeans come to Africa, create themselves to be the ruling class over the native South African groups and then complain after their repressive class system is dismantled?
@delavalled i don't know where the narrative of south africa once being a good country came from...it's always been like this your race just never experienced it because of a thing called 🎇white privilege🎇
@@Luca-nu2zg You don't know much about African History, you need to start learning about European history and its culture. You are not an African period. We are not Africans because we are born in this continent, Africa is within us.
Let's see. No mention of 1. Land expropriation without compensation 2. Mass power cuts and load shedding 3. BBBEE laws 4. Mass rapes and violence 5. Corruption, mass uncontrolled migration and xenophobic attacks. Did I miss anything?
But not every citizen in the whole world was even treated equally. Look at Australia. Aboriginals only were classified as humans in the 70s. In America Jim Crow law, black people not even allowed to use the same public transport and that was till the 70s... So why is everyone pointing at South Africa?
@@gevoel8293 Because Australia solved the problem a different way. We gave them legal rights and when they called the police for help nobody came. When they applied for a job as an equal citizen, nobody hired. When they asked for food on the street corner, nobody fed them. They are "equal" because the law forces them to be equal. But that law isn't culture or identity. I will not support a bloodthirsty tribe who wishes to cleanse me from the land, who wants to continue ancestral feuds from centuries ago. I will not support Aborigines. Respect is a two way street and neither side has done anything to earn it from the other.
I don't agree with that at all. If South Africa had operated on a one-man, one-vote platform in its earlier Democratic history, you would have had a communist regime in no time. I say this without an ounce of hatred or racism, but the black South African population and the white South African population were profoundly unequal in terms of educational attainment and understanding of liberal democracy. To this day, it is so important that black South Africans receive a higher level of education and understanding in order to build a fully-functioning advanced democracy like the fathers dreamed in 1994.
South Africa wouldn't have existed without unequal treatment. The two are synonymous. There was no South Africa before the VOC came and brought slaves to the Cape. (The land that now within the artificially drawn borders of South Africa was of course there, but not a "South Africa" because South Africa was and is an idea and not one the Khoisan and Bantu peoples had before the Europeans came. They thought of themselves as being a part of their family, tribe, clan and ethnic group; be it Xhosa, Zulu, Pedi or whatever ; but not "South African.") The inequality continued when the British came and discriminated against non-Europeans and Dutch-speaking Europeans alike ; forcing the latter north and east, where they in turn discriminated against English-speaking immigrants when the gold was discovered. Then of course the Indians and native Africans were turned into serfs for the profit of the mercantile class in South Africa. Not exactly equal treatment. Then of course segregation happened after Britain stitched the different territories they had conquered in the region into one artificial state for more convenient exploitation for the profit of the Crown and segregation was implemented. The South Africa we think of today is a result of 350 years or so of unequal treatment, and of course I agree with you that unequal treatment is immoral and undesirable, but to wish for a South Africa with equal treatment from the start is to wish that there hadn't been one at all. I cannot agree that it would have been great because it wouldn't have come to be the way it is at all. Not civilizationally, technologically, socially, politically or culturally. All the redeeming qualities of South Africa would not have come as butterflies from the Pandora's box of oppression HD there not been such a box. I think the only solution is to accept the darkness of the past and get to work on fixing things for the better.
@@gevoel8293 I agree but I also don't want to go so far as to say that because injustice exists everywhere,, the injustices here are made to be okay ; finished and klaar, to use the local expression. I still feel that the injustice in the US, and Australia and South Africa were all immoral and need fixing, but I'm sick and tired of Americans and Europeans pretending that South Africa has a *particularly* racist past and that white South Africans are the vilest lot on earth, when they're guilty of at least the same degree of wrong-doing, if not more, themselves. I wish they would stop pointing fingers at us, fix the consequences of their own wrong-doings, and leave us to fix ours.
Can someone please summarize what the president says and provide a bit of background? Much appreciated from Germany (Ich kann 30% verstehen, aber das reicht nicht ...)
Na ja, gut. Then State President asked for a blank cheque? The referendum question: "Do you agree to the continuation of the reform process launched by the State President on 2 February 1990, which is aimed at a new constitution through negotiation?" It is interesting that Dr Zak de Beer, leader of the Democratic Party, which had always opposed apartheid in parliament said that his party would have preferred the question to have included something of the nature and essence ("aard en wese") of the desired new South Africa.
Afrikaans is a language which descends from the Cape dialect of Dutch, but over time developed into its own language. It’s mostly spoken in the western half of South Africa, while Dutch is mostly spoken in the Netherlands.
Lol. Based on my reply, what makes you think I am racist? If you are a South African, you will know that we live in a shithole and it is all thanks to our new government. That does not make me a racist now does it?
Most people in the comments are not writing Afrikaans like some think - they are Dutch who (as always) are going on about about how similar Afrikaans and Dutch are.
De Klerk should have done his homework much better. Black people are suffering MUCH more now than during apartheid! You can't tell a fish to climb a tree and makes him believe he will survive.
Ek is so dankbaar Apartheid is verby.
✨Its the ignorance and blatent racism for me✨
Why is racism bad? Why are you so desperate for me to ignore my own eyes? It's like just a coat of paint for you, right? Black white yellow doesn't matter, right? In that case I believe you are the ignorant one. I have the right to preference my flesh and blood, my own people above another group of people.
Ek stem saam. Altwee is baie sleg.
Idk if this is right but im just gonna say random afrikaan words and tell me if it's correct: (Ek was altyd lief vir jou kas, dit voel asof ek 'n regte mens omhels)
Perhaps, but South Africa is in a MUCH BIGGER mess since apartheid ended. Apartheid was a disgrace and unnaceptable, but look at the country today. Falling apart. ANC has completely fucked that place up. You can't walk down the street or sit in your yard without having to worry about being mugged and killed.
Honestly it isn't that different. Economy wise it been having the same trends as the previous government. But i think the reason why crime and corruption became so rampant was how u transferred power. U didn't teach them how to run a government and should of had a transition government for the first 5-10 years so that they know what to do.it works cuz ur neighbor did it and has an amazing track record and is overall a better country to live in with the average person having a higher wage it being more developed the quality of life being better and having a better healthcare system . U should have at least first abolish apartheid and all the laws it had behind but the same government run and continue what it was doing slowly replacing members with how the people vote but making sure both are qualified. Also while doing this u could have made it easier for the white population to stay while pleasing the asian colored and black population. Also adding official languages is overboard only have 5 . U only need english ,Afrikaans, zulu , xhosa, and kiswahili ( it the african business language) . By that u cover 90% of the population don't need anything more than that. Make everyone learn in english and u have to chose a second language to learn in Afrikaans zulu or xhosa. It make education a lot easier especially in a transition government . After the end of the 5-10 years transition anyone can run . It makes the white south african look better to the africans as in that transition they can rebuild there respect and trust. Everyone happy and the countries a lot better and on track too developed country which south africa never reached. Also giving up ur nuke was stupid as it made the current government weaker and harder to negotiate deals with other countries and let eygpt and the north african state over take it in military strength. With nukes i could easily protect southern Africa. Also while at it make deals with both Botswana Nambia Lestho Mozambique Zambia Malawi angola and Zimbabwe to increase trade and the economy of southern Africa, military strength and development. It would have made Botswana and Nambia even closer to developed status than today and u should did the same with Nambia too when u let them have independence. Mozambique Lestho eswantni Zambia Angola Malawi and Zimbabwe would also be easier to trade with and it would allow them to be more developed than they are ( this could of stoped Angola from switching to right hand traffic which made trade harder).there a lot that could have been done differently but these are some of the key things that could of helped the transition and make southern Africa a lot more wealth and lead to developed country status.
@@shaddythewiz3836 you should have been here ro inform them. You obviously dont know anc. The killed thousands of their opponants before the elections. The IPF was the prefered party by they were murdered out.. It was brutal. That is how the anc came to power. Necklacing, burning down of houses, tribal wars.
The truth is apartheid is evil, a crime against humanity and when you want to get rid of anything evil you act without properly considering the consequences, because it's a question of as long as it's gone. Another thing is that a lot of comrades got corrupt and did not follow organizational protocol. We'll cry more because dangerous traitors are about to take over government. Some are preparing for war as they say, I wonder who is going to win or lose. Criminals are lying in wait for it because it's a big opportunity to up their activities.
From Google: Jim Crow laws were state and local laws that enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States. And now you say that is not the same as Apartheid? It is exactly the same thing.
@@gevoel8293 "Australia only classified their Aboriginals as human in the 1970s" well if you look up Australia's legal classification of a "human" you wouldn't say that's a very good thing. Human rights in Australia are less than animal rights.
