100 miles of adventure, 160 kilometers of challenges. Welcome to the White Rim Road. Travel Along a green river, breathtaking canyons, over steep mountains, through a national park, and find a remote and challenging ride you will always remember. We experienced heat, a terrible fall, and endless views, that burnt themselves in our memories forever. Join the ride in this video with a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and a Yamaha Tenere 700.
Your guide to the White Rim Trail:
- To Access the White Rim Trail the city Moab is a perfect place to stay
- You need to apply for a permit for the trail in advance. If you want to split up the ride you have to book a campsite several weeks ahead - but if you are not a big planner you can apply for a day permit for the trail early in the morning a day in advance. First come first serves.
- You need a 4x4 vehicle or a motorcycle with offroad tires to ride the trail
- Plan 12 hours travel time (without calculating your stops) if you want to do all of the White Rim Trail in one day.
- Most people ride the White Rim Trail clockwise, starting with the Shafer Trail Road. But we had decided to drive it counter clockwise - because we were told that the most difficult parts of the trail are in the first half of our direction - and we wanted to them as rested as possible.
Here are the Highlights of the Trail:
- Mineral Bottom is the easiest part of the trail. Enjoy the first amazing views from the Mineral Bottom switchbacks!
- After a while the trail enters Canyonlands National Park. Over 330,000 acres are filled with arches, buttes, mesas, canyons, hiking trails, dirt roads, campgrounds, and overlooks
- The Bottom of Hardscrabble Hill is quite sandy
- The climb to Hardscrabble Hill is steep and narrow - one of the more difficult parts of the trail! Watch out for oncoming traffic!
- The next 25 kilometers you see all the things that you came here to see. Canyon after canyon, one amazing view chasing the other. You will drive by Coleman Canyon Viewpoint, Candlestick Viewpoint, Soda Springs Basin Viewpoint.
- After Soda Springs Basin you will start to drive up Murphy Hogback - and the ride will become much more technical. This is probably the most difficult part of the whole white rim road (and the part where we crashed with our motorcycle badly!)
- After Murphy Hogback the trail takes you along several scenic canyons again. The Monument Basin Canyon, Gooseberry Canyon and South Fork of Buck Canyon. And from here you will be looking out over the Colorado River for the rest of the trip.
- You are close to the end of the White Rim Road, when you spot the Shafer Trail to the top of the Island in the Sky. The Shafer Trail is a 28 kilometer long road and even though it has countless steep switchbacks, it is one of the most easy and fastest parts of the white rim trail. There are even plenty of pullouts to allow for an oncoming vehicle to pass. But you should defiantly not be scared of heights, as there are no guardrails or any other barriers.

Thank you guys for all your nice comments about the recovery of my travel partner. He is already much better, but even weeks (or meanwhile months) after the crash he still has some pain and his ankle is still swollen. I can’t urge anyone reading this enough to ALWAYS wear proper motorcycle boots + gear. I can’t even imagine what would have happened with his ankle if he would not have worn those boots. Forget about all the lovely customizations of your motorcycles - always invest in proper gear first. 🙏🏻

Yes yes, recently ended up half under a truck, my right foot jammed under the bike, nothing broken , my adventure tough boots definitely prevented very serious damage to my ankle, can’t emphasise enough to everyone to always wear protection, money well spent, you will never regret it. The US landscape is truly remarkable almost other worldly, keep the videos coming for all these armchair frustrated adventures confined due to the terrible Covid, hopefully there is some light at the end of the tunnel here in Thailand and we can start to ride further afield again.

Hey Lea, you are so right! ATGATT means All The Gear All The Time... A pair of real motorcycle boots saved my feet and ankles when I had a serious crash in Colorado. The EMTs and Paramedics complimented me on my choice of full face helmet, jacket and motorcycle boots.

My husband and I always explored the desert in his 56 pickup, but at least he was always doing the driving. I think he just loves riding motorcycles 😂😂😂 This question is not so easy to answer - from difficulty of the trail probably yes, but I struggle a lot with very hot weather and get very dizzy and close to collapsing easily. So at this time of the year with that hot weather it would have been a real struggle for me (plus I think the difficulty of the white rim trail is not only the actual trail, but if you do it in one day the length of the ride. No matter what your skills are, being 12 hours on a motorcycle in crazy heat is just super demanding). So short answer: difficulty of the single parts of the trail is fine, but considering the whole ride it’s a tough one! Funnily I didn’t have so crazy hot weather on my world trip - there were only a few days where temperature was around 40 degrees. Maybe as well because I was mostly so high up in the mountains 😅

I agree, it gets really long. That’s why a lot of people split the journey in two or more days and book campgrounds on the way. We would have done the same but you have to be a bit more early (like book it months in advance…) to find a camping spot in the national parks during high season. But I can highly recommend one stop if you drive the trail! It’s as well super nice to stay out there in nature 😍

This is the best video of the Canyonlands I have ever seen and the selection of music was perfect. You often show yourself in a red dress in the middle of nowhere and I now know where your were. Thank you for this video! I wish rapid recovery for your friend. I also wanted you to know I read your excellent book and appreciated the personal touch you gave of who you are.

Thank you so much for this nice comment! I am super happy that you enjoyed the book as well - i think it’s quite different to the videos here because it is very personal. It’s much more easy to wear a red dress when driving in a car than when being on a motorcycle though - that’s what I learned from this experience!!

Very good video of your journey on the WRT. Come back when you have 3-4 days to transver this trail, it takes on a whole new look to it. I've been on the WRT 5 different times and it has been a new adventure each time, also nice drone video.

Great video of the area. I drove up the Shaffer switchbacks in April of 2018 and it is definitely not a road for the faint of hart. But it is definitely a beautiful drive.

It is, and the whole white rim trail is so stunning! Would have loved the day if the injury of my travel Partner would not have overshadowed the joy of the trip a little.

Thanks for another incredible adventure and glimpse into the amazing vistas from this very technical ride. ATGATT is even more critical in situations like this. As a former Chief Instructor for Canada’s Safety Council Motorcycle Training Course and a rider since I was 10 years old this lesson was learned early in life and is still a routine I practice. Proper gear, even when it’s hot, is your best protection. I hope your travel partner recovers fully without long lasting issues. Stay safe and ride smart. Look forward to next week’s episode

First, I hope your traveling partner has fully recovered from the fall. Second, I suppose everyone is fine right now. Thank you for sharing with us another amazing video, and now the ending... A big stage, huge red-trimmed curtains... Three knocks echo in such an immeasurable setting. Gradually, the curtains melt into a blue flecked with little white robes. The eagle is in the air... looking far down, in such scenic land, a river painting the edges of these green robes, hail those who dare to defy the silence of the gods... Dust and stones are carried on such a path steep, tight loops narrow the path... The gods determined that one of the adventurers would be left without a mount, would suffer more than one moon. Legend has it that when you visit the canyons, never forget to ask permission and greet the eagle so that it does not wake up the gods, for their wrath will be felt... Good evening!... The best recovering for your partner travel. I wich the best for all-inclusive to Lea. The best weekend for all.
