Excellent instructional video. Detailed and informative. It's a must see for an amateur Search in the Beach Hunter. Thanks for the information and sound descriptions.🤟
Wish I saw the video sooner. I basically figured this out on my own by testing different metals at home. Still, the video was self-confirming. It's nice to know I am using the dang thing the right way. Until now, I have been digging everything. I think I may let some of the obvious aluminum pull tab or bottle cap screeches go. (they are quite loud) I believe I can tell when I have spotted aluminum or a nail. Now I am more comfortable focusing on the subtle tones.
Very nice video, and some helpful advice. I guess the reason you didn't show the different knobs is because each machine is a little different. I've heard whispers before but I am also guilty of running an uneven thresh. I'll def give this a try next time out. Thanks.
Nice work....but I was surprised at how loud you set the threshold. On my Seahunter or Excal, I always dial it down to barely below audible. Well, I give a shot trying with more threshold. In future, would like to acquire a DF.....aloha and HH
Hello can you help me? My Whites Surfmaster Dual Field Pi only works with the delay on, otherwise it will have a continuous sound as if it were testing the battery and the detection capacity drops to 5cm from the coil. Adjusting the Gain and T-Hold I get this sound as you show it in the video, but only by turning on the Delay I get a greater depth of detection. Is it correct, as you show in the video, or does the sound have to be intermittent (vibrating) for deeper targets?
The headphones are so bad a blocking noise especially wind its almost impossible to hear anything unless there is no wind at all. I am adding dead cats to my headphones to see if I can get an improvement.
thanx for the info man. i'll be adding one of these to the arsenal soon ..oh and stop stealing all my finds lmao..just kidding bro keep killing it and keep the great vids coming
You can't use factory in every environment. I am happy you found the ring, I am curious what it would have sounded like with different setting like "edge of sound" t hold and low smooth gain.
After a few hours in the field (and lowering the T Hold from that shown in the video) it will make sense, but on first listen I would have agreed with you. And its either hear a whisper from this machine or hear nothing from many others.
I listened to tones through a Fender Strat and Marshall amp most of my life. Maybe that’s why I’m only hearing some of what you’re describing. What happens if you turn the “threshold tone” down so it’s gone and only hear the beeps?
Thanks for posting the video, I run my DF gain all the way up & my threshold lower than normal half the amount as you slightly broken up. When you find a target in the detector range you get a slight spike for the very deep targets, You have to go back and swing faster if the signal gets louder the target is worth digging. I found us 25 cent coins in the dry with louder spikes than yours at 16 inches constantly, Try my method you might change your mind GL HH
Thank you for making this video. I've been using my dually for some time with the higher gain settings (choppy threshold) and I've dug some deep rings and coins. But I've just started using your method of tuning it for smooth threshold and am so far getting even better results. It's also a lot less strain on the brain. So again, thanks!
Sounded all the same to me too..... I guess I cant really hear a big difference.... Better have goooooooooooooooooood headphones if this is what we need to listen to........ Great video, very instructive! Thanks
It's also possible to hear the deep ones with higher Gain using some Delay to smooth out the threshold. Low ain for sure is good in high interference though. cjc clivesgoldpage.com

just be certain to swing the coil slower if the Pulse Delay is on - best setting for that is just turn it on and do not turn it up unless REALLY necessary [ it IS normal for the threshold to hum with a little chatter - and easier to hear the target ]
I remember the first time I saw this video I was thinking I was deaf or you guys were crazy, but now after 30 field hours and watching this video daily I get it. Hard to understand if you don't go out ,dig and learn. My first beach ring just yesterday 💍 at around 15" black wet sand . Thanks for the video!
Hey tasteegold, I love the DF it is my favorite machine. As for depth I believe it to be the deepest detecting at the beach. Compared to the excal which is a BBS and the DF being a pulse it will reach deeper depths I have found rings behind excal users before. As for the Sand Shark I do not know as I have not used one however it is a pulse unit and I have heard good things. How it compares to the DF I don't really know but I won't use another PI unit anyways as the DF is the MAN! Thanks!
Thanks for putting these videos up. I am thinking about adding the DF to my arsenal. I hunt 6 - 8 hours almost everyday. I think you hunt the same, so ho long are you getting battery life? Are you replacing "AA's" every couple of days? Or are you using rechargeable "AA's"? Also, would you agree this should be my next machine? I have 3 Excalibur, one is the original "red head, with gold sword" but it leaks, so dry only for it. I also have a 8" and 10" newer ones. So, the DF or maybe Infinium?
Well done MDG! I was thinking last year of making a video on that but in real time using the DF in the wetsand. Was thinking of putting the headphones on the head cam to capture the sounds of a whispers signal....don't know how good the audio will be.
I don't doubt those settings but my Sea Hunter reacts differently for me- that I prefer. Not saying any one brand better than another but the key to understanding these machines is to match them to your individual needs, hunting areas, etc before they are bought. And I thought your vid was excellent, not too many on line showing how these machines really work.
there is no discrimination for the tones on a PI - DIG EVERYTHING - THAT IS THE BEAUTY OF A PI AND THE AMOUNT OF FINDS ! and believe me if you start to hear tones THAT are weak, whispers and somewhat rough on a PI that sound like a rusty nail or rusty bottle cap [ new bottle caps and pulltabs can sound sharp and loud just like silver coins rings etc ] and think they are garbage, you may very well be losing out on a ring, as even Gold or Silver can sound like a piece of crap depending on a number of factors like the angle, carbon on older silver, depth, etc - pull tabs are Non - ferrous the same as Gold rings so if you have a VLF and use your discrimination to knock out digging them you could be passing on an awesome find [ or on a PI and are 'discriminating' by the slightly different sound with the signal ] good luck
You bought the wrong machine if you wanted disc. I will say, with a very short time on the DF, that bobby pins make a double tone it seems. So there may be some tone ID possible but not much. It's a PI after all.
Hi - I just got my Whites Surf PI a few weeks ago and I'm just learning about the tones. The manual said to adjust the knobs to the triangles shown on the knob setting - can you tell me what the best adjustments to the knobs are to hear the tones for gold. I tried burying a few gold pieces in my yard, and had the knobs at the factory suggested settings, but could not detect the tones for the gold at those settings. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Michael - something is wrong if it is not picking up Gold rings - how deep did you bury them, were they laid flat or vertical and other factors - batteries that are weak is usually the biggest culprit - my suggestion is call Whites directly and ask for a Tech to talk to; they have a toll free number - good luck
I don't know why people insist on running the DF in Factory Settings when it clearly states in the manual that Whites had the option of making a machine with unadjustable settings and chose not to do so for the obvious reason. Factory Setting is just a starting point to takeout some of the guesswork.
+William Powell Oh great congrats! You will be just fine and be able to pick out signals in no time. Just try to get that gain steady. Good luck! Thanks for watching.
Yes. The White's factory is about 45 minutes from my house, and I went down and chatted with the staff about the detector before buying from a local dealer.
'Gain' steady ??? Gain is simply the power button and although it can be used for other adjustments, Threshold is the only steady sound and even then it will only be steady and smooth with the Pulse delay turned on and up to as much as 3/8" or more - you WILL lose depth with the Delay on and it is Normal for the Threshold on the DF to run choppy [ read the info right on the case ]
