In this video tutorial, Yvette Stanton, author of "Early-Style Hardanger", teaches you how to make traditional Norwegian knotted picots as were used in historical examples of Hardanger embroidery. These picots can be used anywhere picots are required, such as in Hardanger embroidery, on needlelace edgings, drawn thread borders etc.
She shows examples of picots used on the cuff and collars of a shirt, including the shirt she is wearing.
The method is also shown in step-by-step instructions with clear diagrams, for both left- and right-handed stitchers in her book "Early-Style Hardanger".
If you find this video helpful, please subscribe to my channel, and share the video with your friends. Lots of people find picots difficult, so I'd love it if this tutorial could help them!

Thanks so much for this demonstration. The book diagrams are amazing, but seeing it done really makes the text and diagrams "click" for me. I so appreciate that the techniques are most like traditional techniques. Sometimes new is nice, but traditional has stood the test of time. It makes me slow down and think about those that have come before me and the love and pride they put into their work that is often missing nowadays.

Hello Yvette: I want you to know how much I have been enjoying your whitework floss tube videos. I came across your videos quite by accident but immediately recognized your name because I do have 5 of your books. I have not been doing white work in the last couple of years - no particular reason. I have been stitching some counted canvas and some cross stitch. I do stitch every day as I am retired and do love to stitch any technique but hardanger has been my favourite for many years. I last finished a 5 foot long table runner in golden yellow on golden yellow. It is very lacy and is the piece of stitchery that had taken me the longest, even longer than the tablecloth I stitched and finished about 8 years ago. I do have a hardanger piece in the To Do pile for this year and look forward to starting it, probably this summer. Thank you Yvette for your books which I have treasured over the years and now for your instructional videos. I look forward to more from you.

Thank you again Yvette. I avoided a couple of Hardanger projects because of the picots but this little video will give me the confidence to go back to those projects and give it a try.💖

Ooh thank you. I've struggled with these, trying to get them even and sit flat. Now I know your method, I feel like starting a new Hardanger project. I do have a big curtain and valance to do and this has come at a perfect time 💐

I was so excited to see this video! Thank you so much. I really appreciate it :). I have confidence now that I’ll be able to do picots. I’m going to do picots this afternoon following your instructions. And of course I would love to take a class with you because I know I’d learn so much. And I can’t wait for your new book to be published. I know you’re working hard on it and hope you’ll do a video once it’s available. Have a great day and thanks again!!

You’re not only beautiful but Brilliant!! I can always trust that if you have a video on the topic I’m currently learning, I WILL be able to understand and process it. I have been dabbling in and out of a couple different projects and decided instead of having a couple wips to ward off boredom, why not make all the wips different styles/techniques of embroidery- then I’m exercising different mental muscles 💪 🧠 enjoy my hobby time. Ty ty ty for all you do and share with us. Ps: was the thread in the demo variegated or am I losing my mind? I know after I look at white work for a good bit, I start to see colours. 😂

Hi Kimchi, that's lovely feedback, thank you! Enjoy your highly varied stitching! The kloster block thread is variegated, but the one I'm doing the picots with is not.

I love the look of picots but do struggle sometimes, mine tend to want to swivel around the bars and point in the wrong direction! I will try your style this morning! Thanks so much for this.

Thanks so much for this Yvette. I’m so eager to try this as picots have been a challenge for me. Just an observation; when doing the woven bars many books I’ve seen go down through the centre of the bar with the needle, whereas your technique involves coming up through the centre (I have seen this in one or two other books). Obviously this picot technique requires coming up through the centre. Any idea why there are differing instructions for the needle direction when doing woven bars? Thanks for sharing your wealth of experience. Anita :)

People do things differently. This is the traditional method. I find it gives excellent results and that's why I teach it that way. Many people also do their bars very wide - this is not at all traditional, and I personally don't like the look of it. Perhaps because mine come up in the middle, it is easier to obtain the narrow, traditional width woven bar by pinching and pulling after each stitch.
