A hard job for open Canoes. And a great guitar sound. Good combination.

Good stuff. I take my old Coleman canoe down rapids and waterfalls. It is more challenging than kayaking.

Impressive and fun! A few forward strokes through those rapids would stabilize the boat and give the speed to avoid those spills... great commitment!

Well done on the rapids and the video!

Momentum as one enter a rapid is one key to maneuvering with authority. Low brace is another key in saving a tipping canoe. Plus keeping the paddle in the water as much as possible for stability. All this is easier said than done when running white water/ Reaaly enoyed the video and love the music.
@tubalul
@tubalul 4 года назад
Thanks Jim. Momentum can be forward or reverse too. But sometimes . . . ?

@@tubalul I agree completely. A lot of people miss the fact that what actually matters is that water is moving past the hull. Water moving past the hull due to the boat going backwards has the same effect as going forward except that now the rocks, etc. are coming at you a whole lot slower, buying you time and space in which to accomplish maneuvers, and the boat can float right up over even the steepest waves instead of plunging into them. Forward speed can be better, though, when not wanting to be held up by gravity at the bottom of a hole. And there's even a place for going at speeds not much different from the water (forward or reverse) and relying more greatly on side-slips. There's no single rule for what's always best.

Beautiful river, great footage. I love the way you the documenting the trip.You are friends across the pond for sure. Great paddling Alistair. Check out my running the ancient rapids drown by damn dams for over 100 years. In 2012-13 two dead dams (None productive) were detonated and removed by the Chattahoochee River Wardens. Our goal is to return the river to its natural wild state in order to allow fish and mussels to move back in to the mighty Chattahoochee River. RU-vid Jim runs great wave rapid. There two vid from different people.

Very nice river a great paddling. Always remember in no circumstanced while paddling raids should one grab the Gunwales. Keep both hands on the paddle at all times.

The Factualist Wow, this was a while back! The river needs a lot of water to be paddleable. Good advice for beginners though.

Not sure which one you meant, but I think on one there's a red throw bag and on the other a white plastic milk container, used as a bailer.

@avlclimber Don't forget, reverse strokes do the same thing & give you more time to react in an open boat as well. Alastair

Nice job! I sort of wish I had gotten into this sort of thing when I was younger. I stick to rapids a bit less challenging, but I enjoy seeing "standard" canoes handled by people who know what they are doing.

Thanks, in my 70s now so I do way more cycling these days, with some occasional paddling and wild country skiing if the snow arrives locally. Hope you’ve enjoyed some of my recent vids. Cheers.

In this style of canoe is it all done on your knees?
@tubalul
@tubalul 5 лет назад
Aye, I’ve usually got a foam mat underneath them, makes for great manoeuvrability and you can tilt the boat more easily. You can also widen your stance when the going gets tougher and move around in the boat for the wind or river conditions.

@nathanshepherd1 Thanks - great fun, though apart from one 4 day trip, haven't done much this year.

What was the difference that led to failure or success?
@tubalul
@tubalul 5 лет назад
Thomas Brooklyn - think it has to getting the line right, too close to the far side landed you up in a cross current, which is hard to control. Happened 9 years ago so a bit of a blur now. You can see I do quite a slow approach, ensuring I was on my chosen route, also making it easier to change my line if needed.

Ah well, I see this one will live to haunt me for a while yet. As I said earlier by the time I realised I'd scrapped the movie build, if I remember rightly I was going to put River Ettrick, Scottish Borders or something like that.

Mainly cycling these days. Still want to do a longer video on our local river (the Scottish Tyne) to put on Kinomap for the indoor rowers, will have to struggle into my dry suit again while the river’s up. videos.kinomap.com/en/watch/s3mbxe
