I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
Formed in 1985, White Zombie’s sound would undergo a metamorphosis during their career from Noise Rock to more heavy metal sound achieving a lot of success during the early to mid 90’s. But by the end of the decade the band called it quits. Today, let’s take a look at the rise and fall of White Zombie.
Rob Zombie born Rob Straker (Stray-ker) , spent his formative years in Haverhill, Mass., a depressed industrial outpost the singer described to the LA Times as and i quote “a place where nothing ever happens. Some magazine voted it the No. 1 worst place to live a few years ago. There was just nothing to do there except hang out in cemeteries. They had these old, New England-style graveyards, and we just used to play around in those all the time. “
Zombie would be pretty anti-social as a kid having different interests from his peerstelling the LA Times “I grew up with really normal, straight parents, but they let me and my brother do anything we wanted to do. They took us to see ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ I remember seeing, like, ‘Phantom of the Opera’ when I was 5 years old.” Zombie would spend eight hours a day watching TV and it soon became an obsession for the future musician with him literally watching anything that was broadcast on TV and he would memorize the tv schedule for the week. This evenvtually led him down the road of making his own super 8 films.
Apart from television, Zombie would develop a taste for larger than life musical acts including Kiss, Blue Oyster Cult and Alice Cooper. Couple this with his love of the DIY ethos of punk rock and Rob Zombie had the basic blueprint for White Zombie.
The band would form when bassist Sean Yseult and frontman Rob Zombie both met while attending the Parsons school of design. The band’s first drummer was also a student at the same school. Yseult would reveal in the book Louder THan Hell “Rob & I were both oddballs. I think we were drawn to each other. We started the band within a month of meeting and basically lived together for seven years. We both had dyed black hair, he had a stenciled misfits leather jacket and i had a bunch of animal bones tied onto a necklace” THey would date but break up during the early 90’s with Yseult telling the chicago tribune "The whole band and the business just got so much bigger than any relationship," The band would have a variety of drummers during this time and found a guitarist named J (Jay Yuenger) who went by the name J.
White Zombie would be the amalgamation of two scenes the noise rock scene of new york which included bands like Sonic Youth and th ehardcore scene in DC including minor threat, bad brains and dave grohl’s pre-nirvana band scream. To Rob he had the goal of not only giving fans a spectacular music video for there songs, but also be able to give fans an equally as impressive live show telling the LA Times “When we started out, the metal scene was, like Twisted Sister and that kind of stuff, so the only place to start was [the alternative scene]--which I thought was so pretentious, “The attitude of those bands was, ‘We get on stage, make no effort whatsoever, be completely nondescript, and you guys in the audience are supposed to eat it up. You kids are supposed to just worship our feet.’
“My feeling is, if you’re expecting people to come and pay 20 bucks to see your show, you’d better look up from your . . . shoes once in a while. I like to see a band that gets up there and works hard for my entertainment dollar. It would result in the band rigging their own pyro using items they bought from industrial stores.
Despite being hailed as an underground band in their early days that wasn’t the group’s aim as Yseult told greensboro.com `we were an underground band, but not by choice,' ``with Rob adding 'We've always been trying to sell out, it's just that no one's buying.
It was during their early years the members lived on New York's Lower East Side, where Zombie and Yseult supported themselves doing mechanicals for a magazine, while guitarist J. delivered pizzas, sometimes with dangerous results telling Greensboro.com ``I got robbed a couple of times, one time with a knife to my throat, on

La Sexorcito was a perfect storm at a special place in time. Nothing he has done since La Sexorcito has even remotely compared to this masterpiece of metal madness. There are very few albums I can listen to all the way through - but this is one of them. It wouldn’t matter if they reunite or not, the time has past - the magic is gone. But at least we can still listen to what will always be an example of the perfect music that came out of the 90’s.

You can hear the slight shift towards the secorcisto sound on their go's of thunder EP. Jay's first recording with them. You can totally hear them get tighter and more precise with Jay's playing. There are some really great riffs on make them die slowly. But the weird low-gain, echo half asked distortion on the guitar makes that album sound like shit. But it's actually heavy.

I’m a little saddened that Ivan got no mention. I got to see WZ twice in the early 90’s on a club tour. The first time I was waiting for someone who didn’t show, but was in during soundcheck and was blown away by the samples being played. At that time it may have been the first time I’d ever heard anything like it. The band was sitting around and I remember getting to sample some of the catering available. The drummer, Ivan, walked up to me and started a conversation. Then asked me to play some video games and chat. It was so awesome to hang out, I met musicians before but this guy was one of the nicest guys. He encouraged me to seek out their earlier albums (this was Sexorcisto era) and I did. The second show I saw we must’ve talked for hours. I didn’t really talk to the rest of the band but he got them all to sign my CD. He was so excited because their next trip back they were going to open in a bigger venue and I was going to be there. Unfortunately there wasn’t a third meet up. My parents split and a friend reported he wasn’t in the band anymore. I don’t to this day know what really happened, I was told it was drugs. I’m grateful for the times I did meet him though as he seemed super smart and respectful 😊

Rob´s birth name is actually Robert Bartleh Cummings, he used the stage name Rob Straker in the early White Zombie days, then changed it to Rob Zombie. Someone who frequently shits on actual music jurnalists, should at least check on basic stuff like birth names.

I came here to say this. I agree completely. I really have to question the legitimacy of a channel like this which can’t do simple fact checking. A visit to Wikipedia would confirm his birth name is not Rob Straker. In 1996 he changed his name legally to Rob Zombie (no info whether he kept a middle name). Also, unrelated to this video, his younger brother Michael is Spider One of Powerman 5000.

His movies are, a thing that exist - don't love them don't hate them. I do know that Devil Music Vol 1: LA Sexorcisto was one of the best god damn metal records ever written and definitely in the tippy top of its era/genre. Gonna go listen to that shit now matter of fact.

I first heard White Zombie in the snowboarding video Riders On The Storm in late 1992, which had 3 of their songs on it. They quickly became one of my favorite bands, even though I couldn't actually find the album anywhere or anything else about them. 13 year old me learned how to play guitar to those riffs, just from the crap VHS copy of the snowboarding video. I finally actually found the La Sexorcisto album the following summer. Then they started showing up on my favorite TV show, Beavis and Butt-head, and then on Headbanger's Ball. I was astonished that this band was now getting airplay on MTV. The 1995 album was a pretty big let down for me, as they started turning more electronic and less metal riff oriented. Never got to see them live.

Love White Zombie. Also, RZ solo. Now, I understand Rob's point about "no stage presence", but it's ironic(at least to me) that he wanted to deal with a scene that he found to be pretentious. Also, to me, Rob and the band had more in common with Twisted Sister than perhaps he believed or wanted to admit. His statement about always wanting to sell out is particularly hilarious because you don't know if it's truthful, or just his sense of humor!

White Zombie broke up during the Danzig tour. Rob quit the band and wanted out. His management convinced him that it would be a huge mistake to ditch the WZ brand and would take years to get another project to the same level, if it were to even happen at all. This happened because Sean and Rob broke up. Rob caught Sean "in the act" with Ivan de Prume. Turned out that Sean and Ivan had been having an affair for a long time behinds Rob's back. It's why Rob would go on to tour in a separate bus. He didn't want to be around his ex, but wanted to keep the band alive and make it even bigger. Due to the record deal, etc., he couldn't kick Sean out of the band. Rob had to live with it. Info came from Philo/Phildo, the drummer for Last Crack that was Ivan's replacement in WZ, and a couple of roadies that got in the conversation. Met him backstage at the San Antonio date at Sneakers. I was talking to him and curious what had happened since WZ were usually out and about after shows. Years before they were signed to Geffen the WZ bus broke down outside of San Antonio and the band ended up sleeping on the floor at my girlfriend's apartment. So, it's not like I was a stranger. Phil said everyone was so upset by the situation that they were staying on the bus and had asked for no contact. I then went on to get my albums signed by Danzig and crew. While I was walking to my car Phil stopped me and said that Rob said that he wouldn't come out, but that he'd sign my stuff. I gave my album to Phil, the glow-in-the-dark version of La Sexorcisto and the green vinyl God of Thunder EP. Phil took them on the bus and had them signed by the band.

Holy shit, if you’re not lying, that explains a lot. I’ve never seen Rob or Sean give an exact reason as to why they broke up; I just remember seeing in articles back in the 90s that it was “amicable” and that Sean instigated the breakup. That makes sense as to why Rob was so persistent in shoving Sheri in Sean’s face, probably to spite her. It also makes sense as to why Rob never wants to form White Zombie again; I can tell he’s a man with a big ego so I imagine he didn’t get over Sean’s betrayal for a longgg time. Too bad they couldn’t be like Fleetwood Mac and just make damn good music out of their broken relationships.

Always been a big fan of White Zombie. I love the style, imagery and of course the music. I have liked Robs music afterwards but La Sexorcisto and Astro have never been topped in my opinion. I'd love to see a reunion for a tour but that will never happen. They've never seen eye to eye since the breakup and haven't been in a room together either. I'm also guessing Sheri Moon wouldn't approve of a reconciliation with Yseult.
@ThaiThom
@ThaiThom Год назад
Chris Lee (Sean's hubby) wouldn't approve either. But that's a moot point because it ain't gonna happen even without their spouses in the picture. Sean and J both hate RZ and that's not gonna change and it is what it is. Meanwhile, J says he's never even watched a RZ movie, and never will. It's just bad blood after the band broke up.
