Whitechapel "Black Bear" from the album "The Valley".
The valley of the title relates to the part of Hardin Valley, west of Knoxville, Tennessee, where Bozeman grew up. Set against this backdrop, he approaches his subject matter unflinchingly, building upon everything that came before, making it clear that he has survived that which he was forced to endure and is not afraid to confront it. "Phil has been upfront in his lyrics in the past about hardships he endured in his life as a child, and I believe with this record we tried to paint a better picture of that," says Wade, who alongside his bandmates stands 100% behind everything their vocalist has to say. "I feel our music is Phil's release from his past, being able to get it out and speak about it, and hopefully anyone who hears it that may have gone through similar experiences can find some release in it as well." To track this powerful collection, the band once again teamed up with producer Mark Lewis (Cannibal Corpse, The Black Dahlia Murder) whose commitment to creating the best possible record reflects that of the musicians involved. "Mark has done the last three records so we are all aware of each other's work ethic from the start. I was pressed for time on lyrics but I always like to write when I'm pressured. Makes it easier for me somehow," Bozeman admits. Recorded in the home studios of Wade and Householder, with drums lain down at Warner Brothers Studio in Nashville, TN, the process was very comfortable for all concerned, taking longer than usual due to the band interrupting sessions to tour, but not to their detriment. "The sessions were fun to me overall but very much down to business," Wade says. "Not really much partying going on during tracking, it seemed everyone was there to do their job, and because they were pretty spaced out it did not seem like we were too rushed or stressed."

Kudos to Phil Bozeman for flawlessly enunciating in that deep guttural register, the drumming really shines on their new stuff, super dynamic. As for the three guitars playing the same main riff, well on one hand, it’s lack luster and boring at first listen but on the other hand, it’s actually pretty damn catchy, the riffs were structured to be more percussive and centered around the full song as opposed to technical leads and complex shapes and that makes their overall sound have this simplistic crushing groove. It’s very pop structured but I feel like many fans will gravitate toward that especially when they play live. Now whether this was a good change in direction for them, that’s not up to me to say. Imo tho, I do enjoy my death metal with groove but also shred.

Given the context of the album. It seems that’s what they really wanted. Phil wanted the story to be told without being drowned out completely by their base sound, but still giving you a taste of it by keeping their groove. I really hope that made sense. I’m a huge Whitechapel fan, and I actually really enjoyed this album 🤘🏼

@nackskott12
@nackskott12 5 лет назад
This. Nobody talks about how their song structures have become so tired. Something that made their earlier stuff unique to me was the fact that they didn't really repeat riffs and every song was a journey. Specifically, that's what I liked about The Somatic Defilement. There's chorus - sounding parts, but they're never repeated, and the verse riffs are all different. Compare a song like Fairy Fay, Prostatic Fluid Asphyxiation or Ear To Ear's song structure to anything they've done recently and you'll see what i mean. This is why I'm still not on board with this album despite it being "heavy" - the songwriting just bores me to tears on anything after Corruption.

If you seriously want the same sound from a previous album on EVERY album forever, then listen to that one album forever and hate all new music. That's fine. To say this isn't good is ridiculous though, and this is coming from a guy that discovered Whitechapel at the release of This Is Exile, went back and heard and loved the earlier work and everything since. They change. They try new sounds. All bands that are together for longer than a decade do this. Some people don't dig it. Some people don't. And that is fine. Quit your complaining that the band is "dead" or "not the same". They are, it's just they moved on from 11 years ago and you haven't.

He’s so much more talented than what he’s showing on the record thus far. This is nowhere near his best. uncleblazzer420 I’ve watched that 4 times through😂 and I know he uses references from other songs thus how we have new era of corruption, from a song off this is exile, I’ve been around whitechapel since somatic defilement I love every album to death, I don’t really like mark of the blade, I don’t hate it I just don’t enjoy that album, but I’m saying some times the reference feel kinda generic but I love whitechapel no matter what even if I don’t like this so called “ new sound “ which it is different from their older releases, I still love them, the references sometimes feel off to me

stlaurent_92 It was an observation. You act like I just wrote a paragraph of complaints. I also will not “move on”. I love White Chapel and I look forward to The Valley. I also enjoy nu-metal so any negative tone taken by my comment was falsely assumed.
@cygnuscraft9544
@cygnuscraft9544 5 лет назад
Well to be fair, you're kinda dumb if you think calling something nu metal isn't a negative comment to begin with. Edit: because the dumbass didn't get it, I mean there is a negative connotation to nu metal whether you personally like nu metal or not because that's how a connotation works. This, is the same reason saying somebody is a trump supporter(even if you mean it in a good way) will be taken negatively because again, negative connotations to it. Can dumbasses not bother me about simple shit anymore lol.

the epitome of all living things No, you’re dumb for knocking a genre of music just because you don’t like it. The dumbest of the dumb, actually. Deathcore wouldn’t even be what it is without nu-metal. That’s what a lot of these guys grew up on.

lajames1988 Lol why? People just like to say that I’m convinced at this point. They have established themselves as a mainstay in this shit. They aren’t going anywhere and they don’t need to prove anything to you whiney people with complicated riffs. They are the ones selling records and living this life, I’m certain they understand what they need to be doing more than you do.

@@SeanMichaelWesley what the hell is your problem? Don't like my opinion then fuck off. I'm not whining at all you idiot. I said I like the song. I'm a fan of this band and have been for a while, my point is that I don't understand having 3 guitar players if the 3rd player isn't going to be utilised. I'm not saying they shouldn't have 3 either. It's a general observation. Clearly you're very insecure as you just went on the defensive without considering the context of my post. Well done

I'm forever appreciative of the band staying together (mostly) and not "devolving" to Metalcore like some other Deathcore bands, but I've also grown very tired of their musical decay into monotonous, pseudo-groove songwriting, which really isn't groovy for people who want that in metal; not even to the level of groove in other Deathcore bands, like Ring of Saturn's Natural Selection, which is basically spacejazz. Anyway, look at This is Exile: It's the best case of, "Death Metal with hardcore elements". Father of Lies and Messiahbolical are somewhat technical, fast, and compositional varied. To All That Are Dead's first 90 seconds were some of their most brutal work. Eternal Refuge had more "groove" than anything they've done in the last two albums. The following album was more personal and began the lyrical focus of Phil's personal life, but Murder Sermon, the hidden track Animus, and Necromechanical are utterly crushing. I'm not saying I want them to be "SOO BROOOTAL" all the time, Carnifex, Aversions Crown, and Rings of Saturn are much heavier, but as once-giants of the genre, I'd at least like to hear Whitechapel try to sound like they're not just bored with themselves and are letting Phil turn the band into his personal diary I don't expect the complexity and speed of actual Death Metal, but Carnifex--a band I actually once complained about for being too edgy and dull--have been incorporating Black and Doom Metal elements into their work and it sounds great. With Chelsea Grin not even consisting of the members that formed the band, Born of Osiris turning into Linkin Park with mid vocals, and BMTH denouncing Count Your Blessings in every interview, I'd just like one Whitechapel song to make me feel like they're not just teetering into Korn-core, one song to take me back ;_;
