Whitetail buck looking for a fight Snort-Weeze at Decoy

TURN VOLUME UP!!!! Starts a little slow. I was hunting in Buffalo County WI when I got this video of a good looking young 8 point buck posturing at the decoy I had in front of me. I grunted 2 or 3 times at the buck when he first entered the opposite side of the field. The buck saw the decoy, and immediately came looking for a fight. After nearly busting me in the beginning, the hair was standing up on both the 8 pointer and myself as I was witnessed what happened next. The decoy I was using was supposed to mimic a 4 or 5 year old dominate buck. This 2 year old didn't care and wanted a fight. He gets right in the face of the "dominate" buck and proceeds to snort wheeze at him 4 times before walking off. Rut-crazed, testosterone fueled display. This was taken November 4th 2009.

He was rather pissy, that the decoy buck had zero reaction, loved the way the 8pt backed away but never took his eyes off the decoy, love the woods in the Fall, I've being seeing the best the outdoors has to offer for 45 years, always great sights!

When that buck turned his head away from the Decoy and act like he heard or seen something the other way. Trust me he was trying to get that Hunter to move. They have tricks too.

When bucks are serious, you can hear them snort for a mile. I love watching them size up a competitor. I have tons of stills, but very little video. This is a nice one. Thanks.

Pretty funny how multiple people........including the guy that posted this video.......have all made comments on this bucks age. Not possible just by looking at a deer. You can all estimate.......but the majority of the comments are making specific GUESSES. All in all it was a good vid. Keep em coming

Oh he’s so funny! This year was my first archery season and I’ve had a lot of fun experiences even though I have yet to harvest a deer. I’m happy to see the animals unpressured from rifle hunters. It’s great to just sit back and watch their antics. Humbling.

He’s sizing up the decoy and his antlers at around 2:25. So cool to see wild animals do this. Great White sharks do the same thing where one will swim up parallel right next to the other to see which is bigger, the smaller one usually moves along. Wild.

I’ve always wanted to put elk antlers on a white tail decoy and hope to get a reaction on trail cam. I know the smell would be off and they are smarter than falling for that but there’s just a small chance I get some crazy reaction 🤣

I wonder if colder temps would’ve thrown him off. Do you think they recognize that their grunts and stuff give off a vapor and are they instinctive enough to notice “the decoy” isnt moving or grunting or can’t see his breath??

I have seen bucks rear up and their hind legs and stomp, grunt, snort, and even wag their antlers around a group of doe, but I can't ever remember one weezing like that. I must have watched 100 videos last fall, trying to bone up on my skills. I was in a huge rut, no pun intended. I guess it payed off, I got my buck and doe last fall! Not the monster I wanted, but hey theres always next fall.

Great encounter and even better restraint to pass a 3.5 yr old buck that will be a stud in a couple years. I love to decoy and call deer in. They arealot more vocal than most hunters think. Soft tending grunts to loud challenge/ frustration grunts and does communicating with fawns and each other. Only advise is turn the decoy toward you at about a 30 degree angle as yousee how he came in.

very nice. How about your decoy position? I dont hunt with decoys often but if you place them like that you usually wont get a good shot. The bucks usually come in like yours did face on or sometimes they circle to downwind and come around again to face them. Often by that point they have spooked off. I usually place mine quartering so that a face to face gives me a good shot, if they circle downwind i either get a shot or they smell the scent i put behind the decoy and come to face.

Wow no wonder deer calls never work, they are more like human calls that sort of sound like deer but about 10 times louder. I have heard a grunt a couple of times in the woods but it was so soft I could have been mistaken. The only sound I'm ever sure I've heard coming from a deer is when I about trip over them getting to my spot before sunrise and they do the little high pitched wheezing sound.

Yes most real grunts I’ve heard have been soft as well. Except when they are chasing. I’ve heard/seen/watched bucks let out some really loud deep tending grunts. The only snort wheeze I’ve heard was loud and he wheezed for I know 45 seconds. It was a young buck and he never came in. I’m guessing he was sending out a warning. It was one of the most exciting things I’ve seen while deer hunting. He was pawing the ground and kept wheezing over and over before slowly walking off.

That warming blow/wheeze is the best call you can do. The larger older deer come running to protect the young ones. If you can practice mimicking that super loud blow/wheeze I promise you'll see way more deer. Give it a shot.

NO,NO, AND NO always face your decoy at you. the buck will come in and make a half circle to come at your decoy face to face gving you a super shot.

How about perpendicular to one's position? That way there would be an awesome broadside when the buck approaches face-to-face? Or do they move too fast during the final part of approach?

I put some tinks69 gel on a limb, a young buck came up and sniff'd it, then snort weezed. Then a BIG buck came in and chased him off. It happened to fast to get a shot.

I believe since this was only a 2 year old, not fully mature deer, it has not developed completely. Much like a jake turkey trying to gobble for the first time....this is all obviously just my opinion. Maybe someone else can elaborate.?.?.

gbjeeper this deer is a 3 1/2-year-old buck not 2. He is sizing up the decoy and wanting a challenge but since it wasn't presented he walked away strutting his stuff. Most of the time in these cases you will end up with a broken decoy. Here is a website that will help to better judge a deer's age. Deers eyes arent like ours. They dint have the ability to focus on a single object, but instead scan an area. That's why you can get away with being around them if you remain still

@gbjeeper If you think that is a two year old deer you are stupid,there is no way that is at the most a 4 1/2 year old I think he was 3 1/2 a two year old,a 2 year old deer doesnt have a body like that,he was square like a suitcase,and you normally don't see an 8 like that,that is 2.Unless you have awesome genetics.
