Whitetip Reef Sharks: Deadly Nocturnal Predators | Wildlife Documentary
Watch 'Phantoms of Evolution - The Unknown Underwater Predators' here: • Phantoms of Evolution ...
With the aid of modern technology, we reveal the unknown behaviour of some unusual species of shark: lemon sharks and their white-tip reef counterparts.
Our film trip begins in the Bahamas. To be more precise: in the turquoise-blue waters of the Grand Bahama Bank, in an exactly fixed location. In the spring, 70 - 80 pregnant lemon sharks arrive here. This huge shark population was first discovered just a few years ago by shark researcher, Professor Sam Gruber.
Many of the females are tired and rest on the seabed. Pregnant tiger sharks swim in the midst of this group. Without any protection whatsoever, our cameramen shoot their footage, surrounded by sharks and succeed in capturing images hitherto unseen.
We continue our journey to Gainesville, Florida, to meet Gordon Hubbell, the leading shark denture expert with the world’s largest shark denture collection. He knows everything about the evolutionary history of the lemon sharks, in addition to those of the white-tip reef variety off Cocos Island, Costa Rica. Here, we encounter large schools of fish, unprecedented numbers of stingrays, as well as hammerhead sharks. However, it is the white-tip reef sharks that make the biggest impression. Their performance begins late at night. Marauding, they patrol in large groups through the reefs and hunt everything that moves. Scales and dead prey fish float above the reef - a welcoming change of diet for the ubiquitous barracudas.

White Tip Reef sharks aren’t dangerous. Oceanic White Tips however very much are. And the video is showing a Tiger. Hard to take this seriously with those kinds of mistakes.

That great white didn’t attack that cage. I’ve seen the FULL VIDEO. It was a paid cage dive to see and film Great Whites. The boat hand were dragging bait towards the cage to get the sharks close for the thrill effect. They drug the bait over the cage kinda to slow and the shark gave a boost to get the bait. He got STUCK in the large viewing/filming window. Great whites need to SWIM TO BREATHE! That’s why it freaked out and was thrashing. It wanted to BREATHE! Have someone hold your head underwater and see if you begin to thrash or not!

This documentary is too sensationalist, and blows shark attacks up to be more of a problem than they actually are. It's really too bad that even when we watch educational documentaries on sharks, not hollywood movies, we still get this "big bad maneater" narrative

Oceanic white tips are the dangerous ones the reef white tips are pretty tame and mild mannered sharks I think they have like one bite with a human and people swim with them all the time. Thumbs down

They dragged the bait over the cage?? What were they thinking?? I wonder about the mentality of those type of people. They do things like that, yet they’re always surprised when it goes wrong!! They can’t fathom out why!!

I’d love to do this just for the thrill and excitement factors. I love sharks but some of the these shots took nerve’s and balls to do. One mistake with a shark is bad let alone a battalion of them; great job to everyone involved in these dives.

40:31 Otodus megalodon was NOT the great-grandfather of all shark species. The earliest true sharks are dated to around 420 million years ago, but megalodon only appeared in the fossil record 23 million years ago. In fact, it left behind no descendants at all. We hype up megalodon a lot because it was probably the largest shark species to exist, but it was definitely NOT ancestral to all shark species like the narrator states.

Surely Tarpon is both a singular and a plural word? Like Sheep. The narrator also uses the word Fishes in the wrong context. Would be more interesting to hear more from the scientists rather than the robotic Narrator.

I always question why those people filming invasive species, comment on the destruction they are causing, allow them to continue. Why not spear them and remove the danger. Same with pythons in Florida.
@mrkipling2201
@mrkipling2201 2 года назад
And cane toads in Australia. I would be filming and killing those things at the same time!! They’re that bad and that destructive, the Australian authorities don’t have any restrictions, or say you need a permit, to hunt and kill the horrible things. They don’t do anything good for the environment and the ecosystem they’re in and they have no natural predators. They’re responsible for the near extinction of a few native species over there. So they need to go.
@kendrox0994
@kendrox0994 Год назад
I know this comment is old, but like what do you suppose that would accomplish? Hypothetically in that case the dive team spears maybe 3-5 lionfish out of how many (insert very very large number here), what would that accomplish? Secondly, im not an expert on sharks, however it doesn’t seem unreasonable to make an assumption of slicing fresh fish around sharks could get them a little more “active”

If you’re going to go in the water with sharks why not wear a chain mail suit, seems pretty foolish to me.
@x_soki
@x_soki 3 года назад
Its not foolish at all. 1. These are juveniles if they were dealing with proper adult sharks it would be different but even then maybe not chain. 2. The sharks are paying no attention at all because sharks dont attack unless they're afraid. If they were to scare the sharks being juveniles they would just swim away. Seriously why does everyone say this. SHARKS ARE NOT KILLING MACHINES
@lotharsoran3604
@lotharsoran3604 3 года назад
A bizzare comment. For a start an actual chainmail suit rather than shark mail would sink like a stone, the diver would barely be able to move. Secondly, depends on the sharks you are working with: age, temperament, species. Thirdly, shiny things often attract the attention of predators who eat and chase glittering fish.... some divers do choose to wear shark mail suits, it really just depends on the situation. For the majority of people, just getting into the water with sharks seems foolish, however it definitely does need to be done for scientific purposes. Hit up Google, have a quick read around, you'll see the pros and cons of mail suits in various situations.
