If u wanna work on getting your curls back, I'd start by getting a deep conditioner and using it once a week over night. It's a long process but so worth it (I speak from experience)

@@chicken5706 it doesn’t have to be wet, I deep condition overnight by using the conditioner or a mask and sealing it in with an oil and then diffusing my hair with a dryer. The product can still work dry because all of the moisture is sealed into the hair then you can rinse when you wake up and style as normal. Always use a water based product and then an oil. Umbertto Gianni’s banana butter is amazing and then castor oil to seal it in. Castor oil is great for growth and protection too (Jamaican black castor oil is always good) Shea moisture make a great one.

Curls are created by follicular angles in the scalp, but hormones can affect it too. My sister had curly hair as a child, and it straightened without her doing anything to them. Either let the damage grow out and they'll come back, or it's just a natural change with maturation.

You do a combination of most of these and you'll see an improvement over months. Also find out your hair porosity. our hair types probably aren’t the same, but getting ur hair back to its natural state n healthy is a journey. i’m abt to be 18 and i only started taking care of my hair in it’s naturally wavy-curly state near the end of last year. i constantly put heat on it. i knew my hair didn’t fall the way naturally straight hair did, but i never thought to take care of it and embrace it. my advice is to keep heat usage to a minimum. at most, i may take the time to straighten once a month. only for a special occasion or if i feel like it (not to say that straight hair is meant for special occasions, but bc it’s very time consuming for me, i keep it for those moments now). i love 90s blow out style hair and how ppl can run their fingers through their scalp to brush it back so smoothly, but my hair just doesn’t do that and it’s okay! we’re beautiful with both styles! putting moisture back into my hair has been the biggest thing, bc my hair had been bleached a few times to get it to different colors within a short amount of time. but also, the years of built up heat. that and getting your ends trimmed. those lil straight ends at the end of your curls may annoy you, but hair cuts will fix that. and layers helped me too! i’ve still got a ways to go. if you decide to start trying to get ur natural hair back, good luck! patience is key. finding creators will similar hair types that focus on hair care is very helpful. 😊

5 tips to getting your curls back, after a few years on the "natural journey": 1. Patience/ consistency. Doesnt happen overnight. Embrace the bad hair days. 2. Quality shampoo and conditioner is the foundation of the routine. 3. Leave in conditioner pleaseeeeeee (with heat protection is a huge bonus) 4. How you sleep determines how they look in the day after. A satin pillow case is an investiment. 5. Humidity and natural hair = the never ending struggle (for me). I just put it in a bun and Im done.

I’ve been in the same position. It’s never a good idea to try to keep length while trying to get your curls back. I would recommend you chop from your shoulders as that is where I see the hair start to fray. After that absolutely no coloring or any form of heat, regardless of heat protectant. Your hair is on the more sparse side so maybe only deep condition once a week, 2 max. Everyone has different takes on hair product but sulfate free shampoos aren’t ideal for oily hair or is you use a lot of creams (amplifies build up).

I used to straighten my hair every single day as well, as my hair is naturally curly my hair would get frizzy and puffy outside from the humidity, I would constantly straighten it to keep it flat. At one point I started trying different hairstyles that didn’t involve washing your hair often, (braids, cornrows, locs, etc) and that started getting me lazy for straightening my hair all the time, because I started getting so used to just leaving my hair the way it was. Also I’m not black I just like the hair style so our hair texture would probably be the same or similar. I started leaving my natural hair out and slowly started to like my curls, as I would get so many compliments on it and eventually realised just how pretty my hair actually is and wondered why I was straightening it so much. From then, I started looking into how to look after my curls, I got a fresh full head of highlights, brown and blonde, and my curls looks absolutely amazing with it. I started deep conditioning and using products to revive my hair and making it look even healthier. Now my hair is voluminous, (although I’ve always had thick hair) it’s bouncy, and looks healthy, despite the damage from bleach. I’ve learnt to love my curls and I’m so much happier with my hair!

This is why I prefer using terms like "westernizing" or "elitism" instead of "white wash". Western European Elitism (the neocolonialmism era that followed the Victorian era) is what actually promotes the idea of assimilating to very specific beauty standards. Not white people as a whole. The Irish and Scottish were also a part of this forced assimilation. Last time I checked they're white.

@V P I agree with you, but I know a friend who does, however it’s not so common as it is among Whites.

Try flaxseed gel! That's definitively the best curls activator I ever used

i used to have curly hair just like the curls you did and i ruined it by straightening and bleaching it. i finally shaved my head and as its growing i dont see my original hair pattern and it makes me sad. maybe my scalp got too damaged or i just need to let it get a bit longer.

Did you use any heat protectant at all?? We’re the irons too hot? Could be reasons for damage after repeated abuse of the follicles. You’ll need a deep conditioning & moisturizing treatment at least 3 times a week for a month or so and progress will start showing. A month is plenty of time to find any other products to revive your curl pattern.

How is getting rid of your curls “white washing”? No hate, I am just curious to hear your side of why you think that. As a white person I didn’t ever have to deal with not being the default so I’m just curious and want to learn

We aren't the default though, that's just racist western brainwashing. Go to an Asian country, we aren't the default. Go to an African country, we aren't the default. A huge percentage of white people have curly or wavy hair, so she definitely wasn't whitewashing herself. She just felt insecure about her curls like a lot of other girls, so she went through a phase of straightening it. Simple
