"so hard and cold and cruel is a man" Wow, I have never been able to understand what is being said at that part. Whitney is the first singer I've heard sing this where I heard what was being said at that part very clearly.
"Ain't No Way" was written by Aretha's sister Carolyn Franklin. Whitney's mother Cissy Houston sang background vocals including that high note, on Aretha's original hit record.
So much power, control, and authority in her voice. She can switch it from chest to head voice so effortlessly. Love her runs and riffs, and melisma at just the right moments. That's what made her so great in my opinion
95KIPPIE That's because she perfected her chest voice. In order for you to grow your head voice your chest must be strong too because 9/10 that's where you'll be coming from when you switch into the head voice. That juss goes to show how strong and solid her chest was because she literally had the best head voice in the business and no one since or before has had a head voice like Whitney.
That's why having an excellent chest voice requires a healthy lifestyle and discipline to maintain it. Forget about smoking and inhaling awful stuff. Anything that jeopardizes breathing will interfere with it. These habits can be a challenge when this type of demand has been placed on you!!!! Being number one ain't easy!!!!
Whitney's voice everyday. Proving you don't have to mix and hit those super high catty notes to sound powerful. Whitney's was all about magnificent resonant chest voice and fairy sounding head voice. She kept all the richness of her voice up to her highest belts and without sounding witch-like like countless singers past E5.
When you’re belting past E5, you need that really twangy sound hence the ‘witch like’ quality, it’s actually a much healthier technique. If you try a push your chest voice up, or have too much (and I mean way too much) of a chest dominant mix, you’ll struggle to hit the high Fs and Gs.
@@theiconicaprojecttheiconic1892 actually you dont need the twangy sound because you’re constricting your vocals with thatt….thats just the common thing for vocalists because they didnt have Cissy as a mom….not really a healthier technique eitherr
To compare Whitney and Aretha's version is not equal. Whitney is singing this song live, Aretha's is a studio recorded version, where you get the opportunity to do as many takes as needed. No doubt both were great singers with great range and control.
@@whitneyandmariahremasters8597 I think she is just vocally tired here. She still sound amazing, but if she rested her voice, she would probably be better. I think later on this year, she developed vocal nodules around mid July 1994
I think they had very different points of view in this song. Aretha's was very sexy, very loving. Whitney's was at the end of her rope. Both amazing singers, individuals, with very different lives and interpretations.
In Honor of Whitney and 2 year anniversary of her passing here's a flashback of her singing Aretha Franklin's Ain't No Way live in Philly during The Bodyguard Tour back in 1994.
@@kyleroper5379 thank you for providing detailed info! Artists who excel at singing live have varying renditions…I agree with you, Whitney gave an inspired performance. Gone too soon, a voice for the ages!
I know she is gone but she had better sing that song. Oh my gosh, she sung the notes off the music sheets and sent them into the stratosphere. To sing this song live and sounds just as good or better than the studio recording is a testament to her gift.
Stupid comment : did she pretend to touch Aretha ! Her performance is beyond words and even in your dreams you couldn’t pay a Ain’t no way tribute as Whitney did !
Singing this is probably a big factor in her vocal damage... even patti used falsetto on the high part on the bridge... Still think WH has the best versions of this classic though
Chicago has Melvia Chick Rodgers who actually has more views than WH. No doubt Whitney was a true Diva, however, Chi-Town has its own product. Check her out!
No. Singing Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" is what gave her vocal damage. She never had that kind of height up on the higher end like Aretha, Patti, and Chaka, which is why I'm surprised she decided to record the song in its original key (Mind you, when she sang it live, she did take it down a whole step but wouldn't sing that bridge). When Whitney sings Aretha songs, she tends to take them down as she doesn't quite have the higher belt range like the ones mentioned above. I think she never learned how to mix like them. She had this full, rich chest voice, which is why the middle voice is so big, but she never learned to mix head into but instead pulled chest voice high. Now she definitely used head voice and was judicious about taking chest voice too high when she was younger. She would simply switch to that gorgeous head voice she had but again, she never learned to blend the registers.
Was that her mum backing her up again? She says "mummy I love you" at the end. Wow, it's in the blood 👌 I feel so heartbroken for Ms Cici, losing her legendary daughter & later granddaughter within such short spaces of time.
955pokerface Not completely. Smoking did damage to her lower register vocals, but her voice was still there. Whitney was just tired. Even on her worst day she was better than these chicks nowadays.
I think it was everything. Idk how ppl can pinpoint drugs when there are still so many active musicians that did/do drugs that still sound good. But they didn't have the stress and pressure that Whitney had on her to be ON every single day. And worked damn hard to get to where she was. But regardless, she is still the greatest EVER, IMO of course.
Whitney here in 1994 was in her vocal prime and even she had alil strain on the bridge of this song..I dont know if the key on the orginal that Aretha sang is in a hard key or what..I seen Patti Labelle even struggle wit that bridge.
Smoking totally ruined her voice and people who deny it are delusional. i smoked cigarettes for like a month and had zero upper singing register, it was just phlegm and rasp, that's totally what happened to Whitney, it damages your vocal chords, her voice drastically darkened, and her 2002 album was evident of that
@@Cmc995 ya its crazy how she still had all her higher register and smoother head voice to chest voice transition in 96 in 98 her head voice would not come out sometimes
Whitney performs this song well, but the original is better in my opinion the best part seems to be unique to Aretha. She didn't take the song from Aretha like she took I Will Always Love You away from Dolly Parton. She does sing the song well. Cynthia Erivo is pretty good too!!!❤❤❤ All black beautiful and talented!!!!
Only Whitney, and Gladys Knight could sing Aretha’s song and give them justice. Maybe even Dionne. She once sung Aretha’s song” Daydreaming” and she sung it pretty good. But nobody sings “Ain’t No Way “ better than Aretha with Cissy Houston in the background.
I'm not a die hard Patti Labelle fan hell i think i only know 2 songs sadly lol but she murder this song in aretha frankilns face and she gave me chills lol.
Ain't no way For me to love you If you won't let me It ain't no way For me to give you all you need If you won't let me Give all of me I know that a woman's duty Is to have and love a man And that's the way it was planned Oh but how can I, how can I, how can I Give you all the things I can If your tying up both of my hands Oh ain't no, ain't no way (ain't no way) It ain't no way no, no, no (ain't no way) Sho' ain't no way (ain't no way) It ain't no way (ain't no way) It ain't no way for me to love you If you won't let me So, stop trying to be Someone your not Hard, cold and cruel is a man Who paid to much for what he's got And if you need me Won't you say, say you do Because if you need me Don't you know I need you Ain't no way
I think so. At the end, she said mommy i love you... only you. Its as if she was paying homage to her mom and letting ppl know her mom is the one who song that high soprano note in original recording.
I was expecting a bit more. Her voice blew out on the bridge. Patti Labelle did a better more personalized version of the song. I still love Whitney. God Bless.
jeffrey a she had been smoking a lot and touring way too much. I think later on this year, she had developed vocal nodules and an ulcerated throat because she wasn't resting her voice properly
Well no one sings that bridge in pure chest. Not even Aretha and Patti switches to head voice. No one attacked the notes with that kind of power and chestiness ever. and open throated This notes are close to G5..the last big notes are F5/ F#5 AND They are all sang big!
Patti sounds HORRIBLE and over the top with all her screeching and cat-sounding belting. Her tone sucks. Her vibrato suck, her transitions between registers suck. Whitney was refined and powerful when it needed to be. Patti made a specialty of ruining Aretha's classics.
+Exxon Hodgson the sweet inspirations backed most of Aretha's hits. Cissy led that group and if you listen to the two Aretha songs prior to ain't no way, same concert Whitney is doing a tribute to them and Aretha. Whitney sang back up on Chaka Khan I'm every woman original at 15. if you listen to the 86, 88 concerts, Whitney tells the story. Her mom was a beast too!
