You got confused here( 3:13) because in the original song Whitney sings a higer part while Mariah sings the lower part but because they were harmonizing, Mariah's ears were swift to hear that Whitney was not going up so she,because she has the greatest agility ever, switched gears quickly to take over Whitney's part hence why they glanced at each other on some Whitney: "Thank you girl", Mariah: "You know I got girl". I do always enjoy listening to WH she was a great singer. But Mariah, will always be my number one female singer she’s got everything really and to top it all up she is able to create her own lyrics and music and on top of all that create number one hits. That puts her in another category of her own as the BEST!
@@alexanderjones451 Which baffles me even more since Mariah writes a lot of her songs than it should be just as easy to change the key so it doesn't strain her voice but this is not the case she either goes too flat or don't quite feel comfortable singing the song outside of the original key, which makes her a lesser of a singer because she doesn't exude that confidence live when she has to sing a 1/4 note lower she has all these notes in her arsenal but can't seem to make them come to life. If I want to hear a dead singer I will dig Whitney up and I'm sure her skeleton will breathe life into a song better then your living Mariah! Yep I said it!
That would've been SOOOO amazing. I can't imagine where Celine would fit in though. If they did it live now with Mariah, Whitney's parts would be left intact probably, to honor her, and Mariah's verses would be shared with Celine. It would be amazing to hear that

Both of them were not in the best vocal conditions at this time. Whitney was finally feeling the effects of substance abuse and Mariah was completely burnt out from serious over work. Regardless they gave a lovely performance

It wouldn't have been right with Celine in it, thematically. The song is an anthem for the emancipation of enslaved people, the pivotal moment in the film (believing a messiah will come to save them). Having two black women sing this song, is deep on many levels.

Dude, Celine can never stand beside these 2 legends, they will eat her alive. This song is so full of complex melismas, riffs, runs, transitions, etc which these 2 legends are the supreme master of. Celine cannot do what these 2 legends are doing. When Celine tries to do even just a simple run, it just doesn't sound natural and is often disconnected. Celine is great but let's face it, Mariah and Whitney are the supreme powerful beings who rules them all!!!!
