i love it when it doesn't sound like a competition but actually two people who are amazingly gifted in their craft coming together to make something beautiful
I love that Whitney was never the type to try and out sing or outshine someone who was not vocally on her level but allowed them to shine in their own unique way!
@@arkhamcapper1493 Well, she was never more succesful than Whitney to start of with not even that year, then if you watch some of Mary`s older interviews you`ll discover that she said what performing with Whitney did for her career and how many doors it opened. She said!
Cause you know it would be intimidating for most to duet with Whitney. Such an amazing talent, yet such a humble spirit. Whitney was someone really worth admiring. ❤
Geniuses HAVE to do that, and they GET to do it without insulting anyone. Even the best jazz artists in the world got carried by Miles Davis, and they felt it was a privilege. But let’s not get it twisted: Mary may not have had Whitney’s pure singing ability (who did?!), but she had a “voice” that was equally powerful and more powerful in in one respect. It came from her body and her heart instead of her vocal cords. Whitney couldn’t sing about the raw sh!t like Mary could because she was a pure singer. Mary was a vocalist, meaning she could put into a song whatever it needed at any particular moment. That was and remains her gift. To her credit, Whitney clearly understood this about Mary. She knew what Mary could offer. Whitney couldn’t do what Nary could, but she didn’t have to either. Her natural singing voice spoke for itself. Both of these women…extraordinary.
You would’ve had to follow her cause Mary has sung the house down several performances prior to this. That’s why Whitney wanted her to perform this with her
@@swisschoklate736 Mary sings in the key of 'she flat.' She is rarely on pitch. I have perfect pitch. I have a music degree. Go try someone else with that BS.
@@queenqiana2922 gtfoh. Your “differ” is dumb asf. Mary was Mary before Whitney asked her…asker her…again asked her to come to sing and she didn’t need her for anything!!!!! She was already MARY ….y’all say some dumb stuff on social media about artist you don’t know much about to think that.
Mary has an energy everyone loved. Whitney didn't mind sharing a stage, but she'd remind you she was Whitney. She led this performance but there was no ego, she was pushing Mary and allowing her to shine. I loved them together. ❤❤
This part! She even put on voice coach hat and guided Mary exactly where Mary needed to go and where Whitney wanted her to go. And -- it's obvious Mary needed and appreciated it, because Mary was clearly nervous as (which she admitted, because heck -- it was The Whitney Houston)! @@skepchica
It’s crazy that Mary isn’t a singer as much as she is a vocalist, yet she can sing with the best pure singers in the world and hold her own! She never gets blown off the stage…NEVER! That’s a testament to her unique voice, passion, and soul.
Mary is a “sanger”. May not be the best vocalist but she can sing her ass off. Her unique and gritty tone is what separates her from the norm. Just as such singers like Etta James, Tina Turner, Janice J.
@@fleetwood7538 anybody that comes here and compares these two great singers are dumb and petty af.. Whitney is the greatest singer of all time, Mary is also amazing at her craft too, and stays in her own lane. They both gave exactly what this song needed plus some. Both legends and friends, go sit down somewhere bruh.
Whitney was the best!! Always encouraged everyone that she took under her wing. She knew who she was and was secure in it and was not intimidated by anyone else. RIP.
She is profound perfection & beauty. The highest ideal & held by beautiful babies coming into this world. Protect babies & mothers. Bring back midwives & make birth safe from male doctors & traffickers.
They have been very close friends for years. Yes Whitney is the best to ever do it but in no way did she ever have to show Mary how to do anything. Mary is an OG legend all by herself. Whitney asked Mary to join her simply because they are friends and she knows Mary can Sang.
@ Anxietywilnotwin, I agree, Whitney opened up doors for Mary, like ANYONE Whitney associated with because she was blessed, but Mary knows her audience and it always amazed me that she didn’t try to mimic Whitney like everyone else. Mary stuck to her guns, that made me like her even more. They really complimented each other… Team Mary ALL DAY. Prayers for Mary
There was so much going on behind the scenes of this performance, in both their lives. Love the sister hood and support of these two gifted artist. Whitney was a force RIP. Mary is great too.
That part. I love that MJB names that Whitney's death was a pivotal moment in her life because of the intersects of their lives. God bless Whitney's soul. WHEW!
This will NEVER get old; it makes it even better that it's Whitney's mother, Ms. Cissy, who hits the high notes in the background and brings the harmony together in the late, great, Ms. Aretha's version of this song.
Whitney never upstaged any other singer!!! What a "Classy" performer and an outstanding artist❤❤❤! Mary did her thing, in her way and her style...she did an excellent job in the company of one of the greatest singers ever❤!
Yall notice how Whitney Houston seemed to want Mary J to shine...Almost like a big sister I felt Mary say this performance helped her gain a bigger fanbase
Not only is this the most beautiful duet in history, Whitney ability to be the humblest female artist in history to let other female artists shine in her presence without being insecure in her GOD given talented needs to be STUDIED. Aretha, Chaka, takes notes because as GREAT as y'all was y'all still was insecure when it came to the younger artists. WHITNEY IS WHAT GOD WANTED HER TO BE......A VESSEL. A MOTIVATOR, A TEACHER, A WOMAN WHO BROUGHT THE BEST IN OTHERS, WHITNEY YOU ARE MISSED DEARLY. WE LOVE YOU NOW & FOREVER. MARY CARRY THE TORCH
“Stop tryin' to be someone you're not. Hard cold and cruel is a man Who paid too much for what he's got. And if you need me to love you Say, say yeah you do Oh then please, please, please Don't you know that I need you?” The most heartfelt and heartbreaking lyrics that anyone has written ever. Thank you Baby Sister, Carolyn Franklin.
I remember that diva’s live tribute to Aretha Franklin. I never forgot how Mary j and Whitney acted a fool. I had to come back to look again 20 something years later. This is legendary❤
Mary was so amazing. I listened to this performance a lot of times. Mary's unique presentation of this classic song just did it for me!! That is why she is the queen of hip hop and R and B soul.
That was so great of Whitney to make MJB shine and make this performance her moment! She did outshine her and yet Whitney’s voice still sounds amazing!!! ❤❤❤
@@alyciacooper2Nothing more true! It's truly scary how powerful her voice truly is. I was telling my son how she didn't do many duets because people were intimidated by her. She's a force to be reckoned with even when her voice changed. They still couldn't get her even if they tried.
OMG YESSSSSSSSSS YOU BETTA GOOOO, MARAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!! Up there hanging with freaking Whitney Houston!!!!! Doing the damned thang right along with her -- YES!!!!! And of course Whitney belting out them notes like it's nothing, per usual!! This was AWESOME. I can't believe I'm just seeing it -- YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾❤️
Even though whitney knew her voice was the ish. It never seemed like she tried to steal the spot like. U can tell a few times she wanted to get loose but pulled it in to respect the other artist turn
@@StevvieDYou're having a laugh. Whitney looks like her mother, she sounds like her mother, Cissy is her mother. You're gonna say next that Elvis is her father.😅
I appreciate seeing how they are on stage both shining, neither trying to do outdo the other. Just letting their own uniquely beautifully lights shine. Divine peace to your soul, Whitney.
Everytime Whitney wanted a little more from Mary she said sing it girl … Whitney oh Whitney.. How could we love you so much n u didn t y love yourself ?
oh my God what a duet......they literally brought Life to this song and filled it with their own feelings....when Mary sings "can you love him like this " to Whitney.....like she literally was warning her about Bobby ..... the two really crying tears in notes....this music is something special for real....and these two artists are extraordinary
Honestly one of the best performances I’ve heard from Mary. Her voice brought something very special to the song and I love how gentle Whitney was with her. Whitney could have blown her out but she allowed her to shine! So much grace ❤ I love Ms. Patty but Pat would Neva!!
Whitney is most definitely unique with her vocals, however Mary has to contain herself from her soulful emotion , which takes off in her singing that reaches deep in her soul ,so much that her whole body has a vibration trying to contain taking of and soaring as her whole body has to move all about,. Nothing but soul !!!❤❤❤ Both fabulous in different ways that resonates with the audience!😊❤
WH wouldn’t of blown her no damn where. Yall kill me trying to put down one Artist to build up the next! MJB can hang with anybody! You must be stupid.
