Whittier was established during World War II by the U.S Army, the railroad to Portage Valley was completed in 1943 and used by the Military as a debarkation point for troops and cargo. Whittier is an ice-free port. The military was active until 1960 with a population of about 1200 people, and it decreased when the Military left, Whittier receives big numbers of visitors every year that can experience driving through the tunnel and do other activities like hiking, fishing, and dining.
