Throughout the history of mankind, the subject of identity has sent poets to the blank page, philosophers to the agora and seekers to the oracles. These murky waters of abstract thinking are tricky to navigate, so it’s probably fitting that to demonstrate the complexity, the Greek historian Plutarch used the story of a ship. Amy Adkins illuminates Plutarch’s Ship of Theseus.

Asking “who am i” makes me feel like I physically cannot ever answer this. It feels like my brain isn’t equipped to process any further. I look into the mirror and I dissociate. I have a lot of days I dissociate. I truly think a huge part of why is because I don’t do enough in my life to feel fulfilled. I was so lively as a kid and I feel like I let go of that as I started overthinking and getting caught up in the things that don’t matter, having now to chase that my “self” again. It’s a feeling I can’t explain, but i know I have to start seeking more discomfort and doing more in my life to feel closer to my self.

You are always yourself. The reason you can't answer the "who am I" question is because we often identify with the mind and body. You are the awareness that is aware of the mind and body. You have always and will always be awareness in a a body watching thoughts.

I feel something similar when I ask myself this question! But I also find this question extremely helpful; even if I can never truly answer it, just the investigation helps me see something about my experience - an insight like the one that showed you that you weren't doing enough to find fulfillment. At the deepest level, I don't understand who I am. But in reality, no one understands. And that's okay. When we can accept and make peace with that, the question is no longer a source of confusion, but a source of clarity.

have a way to solve this. We can define identity based on a single unifying essence. For example, when comparing me now and 10 years ago. There is something that unifies the mind now and 10 years ago. Like, experience and self awareness, and persona. The mind now and 10 years ago had the same self awareness. Say, if we take the mind 10 years ago and now, and we give them both equal knowledge and experience. Then, both minds would experience reality the same way and have the same choices and feelings. That is why the mind 10 years ago and now are the same person. Which is me. I think this problem isn't a huge one as personhood is an intuitive aspect of life.

Shawn Ravenfire I like this idea, yet, to conceive oneself as a continuation of action, wouldn’tyou need to assume there's someone acting, therefore, an “I”? Also, if the action you meant takes place at the level of particles or molecules you end being undifferentiated from everything else, I think… However, I loved those two ideas: continuation of action and being a doughnut hole :)

Buddhism provides answer for this kind of question really well. You cannot define yourself because there is no such thing as 'I'. Your body is not the true nature of you. Your mind cannot be the trueself since it changes all the time. Your name,job,residence, and so on can never define you by itself. However, all the things mentioned above, when all the things that compose you gather it is you. So, your true identity is the one acknowledging that there is not a single thing that can define you by itself but, at the same time there is not a single thing that is not part of you. So instead of debating about whether the ship mentioned in the video is a or b, just embrace the fact that the ship is a and b at the same time while both cannot define the ship alone. Dont try to define things with one feature or point of view.

Debating is an essential quality needed in a society to develop. U saying in Buddhism u don't debate I don't buy it because the place when Buddhism originated was one where everything was debated. Answering the question at hand though "who am I?", you'd have to take both of the factors below into account, not just one. You are what you've been and all you could be. You are the endless possibilities and life choices you can make. You are your life and all it can be. Not all it will or has been, but all it has the chance to be. In endless timelines, possibilities and 50/50 chances, you're not one side of the coin and you're most certainly not the path you have chosen or will choose. Instead, you are everything you COULD choose. Everything you can experience. Everything you are now and can choose to be or not to be. You're everything that could happen to you. You, I, we, are nothing more and nothing less than a million billion possibilities. As diverse as the theory of multiple timelines itself (should it be true) you are all the versions of yourself. They're all inside you like tools in a tool box, it's just a matter of what you've needed yourself to be in the circumstances given, and most days, you don't even know all the tools you have, simply because you've never given yourself the chance to use them. Its as beautifully simple and yet complex as... You are all you could ever be, whether you like it or not, in the end it's not even such an important question. Certainly thrilling and adventurous, but of not much importance. Nonetheless, take the freedom to explore it's ideas like a kid in the playground, that is afterall, all life is. As to my opinion on the ship problem, I think the ship in somebody's 'back yard' is the real ship. Its very name is after all 'the ship of Thesius' and ship B never belonged to Thesius, it's a perfect copy of the one which belonged to Thesius, but it never truly belonged to him. It's like getting a perfect replica of your long lost childhood toy, it only looks like your toy, but it was never yours as a child, and hence, not your *childhood toy* I guess however, in a sense, to some, it's the idea that counts. The imagery in the present and not it's existence in the past. It's a matter of personal view, there is no wrong answer, the angles you're looking at are only different.

I am cool with all of what you are saying except the idea of all what I can be because if anyone is anything he can be not the true version he turns out to be then anyone is everyone because in this case we all share the same self and the am of any of us is the same to all You with your experiences define your past and your self after ten will define what you are going through now possibilities are possibilities to all they don't change the essence of a person it's not the same case for the character that defines your past your timeline and your choices to move on

After watching a TED-Ed "Who Am I?" video, I've deepened my understanding of what makes us who we are, thanks to an insightful mix of philosophical, psychological, and biological perspectives. The video provoked me to ponder profound questions about self-awareness and consciousness, urging me to think about what truly defines me beyond my physical appearance and social roles. It highlighted how our brains and genetics play key roles in shaping our identities, framing identity as something that's both tangible and influenced by neurological and genetic processes. Additionally, it underscored the importance of personal choices, experiences, and relationships in forming our unique selves, and stressed how culture and society influence our self-perception. This introspective journey has made me reflect more deeply on various aspects of my identity, offering a richer understanding of myself that I hadn’t fully considered before.

All philosophical / metaphysical (or otherwise vaguely structured) questions pertaining to "I" can be answered in pure scientific & mathematical terms if and only if the following question can be answered: *"Where am I"* (in other words, where is "I" precisely located) For example, if Theseus' ship were reductively defined as a single point - say, its center of gravity, then the philosophical question of the two ships can be answered - the refurbished ship, despite no longer having any original parts, still retains the center of gravity of the original ship. Each time an orignal part was replaced, the new part integrates with the center of gravity of the original ship. And conversely, the 2nd ship assembled using the disintegrated original parts comes together around a new center of gravity, hence it is not the same as the original ship, even though the parts are the same. Extending to us conscious beings - we need to (or science needs to) first identify where the "I" actually resides. By analogy, each and every cell of our body (including possibly all our brain cells) might have been newly formed and totally different from our childhood body, yet the "center of gravity" or the locus of "I" of our being has remained unchanged since the moment of conception in our mothers' womb. "I" am not my body... "I" am not my brain... "I" am the convergence point of all my conscious/subconscious experiences.

+Sam Reads But what happens if my center of gravity changes rapidly? Like if I step on a landmine and both my legs fly off. I have changed my center of gravity. Or I have become a torso and pair of legs. If the legs are in, say, Afghanistan, and I am in Kansas. Where am I? In Kansas? Afghanistan? In the core of the earth, because that's where my center of gravity, technically is, if you count my torso and legs together.

+Shakil Rafi Great question - it kind of gets to the heart of the consciousness paradox. So to clarify - center of gravity was just an analogy of a known and defined concept in science. I was referring to a *center of consciousness*… which is indivisible and fixed inside our physical brains. Such a point is not defined in science yet. In fact, scientific theory currently believes the exact opposite - Neuroscience sees consciousness as an "emergent process"; of multiple superimposed brain functions. Scientifically speaking, consciousness would then be a measurable by-product of physical brain cell activity. In other words, scientifically speaking, if the brain is replicated cell-by-cell, then the “I” also gets replicated - exactly like a copying a software program. I feel that current scientific approach to consciousness is fundamentally incorrect. Like your example of a changing center of gravity by changing the body's mass distribution, is it possible to change the location of conscious "I" from inside my brain by either changing the arrangement of atoms of my brain, or by somehow replicating my “I” outside my brain? Lets consider two cases: CASE-A: It is POSSIBLE to replicate a conscious "me" such that there are two identical, physically separate "me's" existing simultaneously (say Me(X) and Me(Y). By definition, I should be "conscious"; of both entities simultaneously -- so whatever Me(X) experiences by way of its senses (sight, touch, etc) will also be experienced by Me(Y) - such that the super-set of conscious experiences of both Me's are one and the same at all times. Correct? Nope, this is physically impossible, because it violates the laws of physics: Simultaneous consciousness/awareness of two physically separate entities will mean information between the two entities will have to travel faster than the speed of light - it is the only way both remain synced as on single consciousness. Conversely, if we have to obey the laws of physics, then physically separating Me(X) and Me(Y) should break apart the two consciousness, correct? But this brings about a paradox - At the moment of separation of the one consciousness into two, WHICH ONE AM I? Am I Me(X) or Me(Y)? Considering both the entities have exactly the same atomic arrangement, how would "I" choose which entity is more "me" than the other? CASE-B: It is NOT POSSIBLE to replicate a conscious "me" such that there are two identical, physically separate "me's" existing simultaneously. Doesn't this violate the basic nature of software programs? I mean, if my brain is replicated cell-by-cell, then by the neuroscientific definition of consciousness, why should the “emergent process” in the new brain be any different from my brain? Nope - It should be identical - hence the paradox again - as explained in CASE A. Considering both the above scenarios, the logical conclusion seems to be that consciousness / awareness cannot be represented as a property of our physical brain - which means that consciousness is not located in our brain cells - it is NON PHYSICAL in nature. Wanna scientifically disprove this? Then find that single brain location point - A single undivisible point in the brain is the only way to get over these paradoxes, but it would also mean that "I" am unique and cannot be replicated by any physical process.

@shakilrafi7964 8 лет назад
That's actually a well thought out argument! And my apologies, "center of gravity" really is an unhelpful terminology, but you managed to get the gist across pretty.well. I find your Case A a bit dodgy. Because once you're both Me(X) and Me(Y), the question of "Who am I? becomes meaningless" Let's play the devil's advocate here. Assume you're lying down on a bed named A, and I'm lying down on a bed named B. A very skilled surgeon comes and *randomly* removes a cell from your body and gels it to mine. And takes a cell from me and gels it to yours, at the exact same spot where it should be. Pretty simple, we lose millions of cells everyday, no biggie. He then continues to do this. Replacing one cell with another and another and another, until all the cells in the body lying down in bed A are in bed B and bed B in bed A. Where am I? Has my "consciousness" for what it's worth been transferred to bed A, or has something else happened? Case A: My consciousness has been realized in bed A. Since the only thing that has been transferred from one bed to another were cells it must have been one cell (or a set of cells), or the arrangement of certain cells in a certain way that made my consciousness "appear" in bed A. Maybe it was the 100th cell, maybe it was the 10 trillionth cell, in any case it was something material, a single point, that was transferred that resulted in me getting realized in bed A. Case B: My consciousness still manifests in the body in bed B, In which case I'm in your body (hope you took good care of it!), but that's ludicrous, because the body in bed B has none of my memory cells. I doesn't get a dopamine high looking at the same woman, (all cells and glands have been transferred). It's language center is not trained in the same language as I was, it doesn't have the same muscle memory for the same kinds of sports. Heck if I had a history of depression that never registers to it. Only Case A seems the logical conclusion. Case B could also be true but in that case my sense of identity has lost all meaning, "I" has become a shallow placeholder, a bit like your example with Me(X) and Me(Y)
@samreads
@samreads 8 лет назад
+Shakil Rafi Yes, in your hypothetical "brain transplant" experiment, Case A would most likely be true... but it need not necessarily depend on any particular cell. If we go by the neuroscience definition of consciousness, the moment there are enough brain cells (of any combination) transferred such that the "emergent process" of the set of transferred cells restarts, you might find yourself conscious inside of a new body. However, the real question is, would it still be YOU? Or would it result in "You" being completely destroyed and a new consciousness (with access to your stored memories) begins? Do note, that by neuroscience definition, "YOU" or "I" is nothing but a generic Emergent Process with access to certain specific memories. So scientific community believes that there is no "YOU"... but simply the combination of your stored memories plus an "emergent process" of brain cells manifests as "YOU". This makes perfect sense, in a simplified way - the only thing different between YOU and ME are our individual memories stored in our respective brains. Simple, if not for the PARADOXES!! I mean, given greatly advanced technology your brain transplant theory may be possible... and so would brain replication. So if the two brains' memories are exactly same, and the Emergent Process of the same arrangement of cells is the same, logically, doesn't the "I" also be replicated in two physically separate entities? (Like Agent Smith of the Matrix Revolutions - simultaneously conscious of all his clones) - that just violates basic laws of physics.

This is a wise, clever, people-friendly explanation of the philosophy of Identity. What we need is a useful procedure for taking stock of one's identity; a way for relating that to self-esteem; a metric for self-assessing one's self esteem; and a procedure for strategically planning how to build on identity strengths, heal identity wounds and fill the lacunae; then a method to transform identity and self esteem needs into new strengths. That whole process needs to be behaviorally specific and replicable... I believe that's what we need next. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

I always considered the software more important than the hardware after a point, the hardware only matters to me insofar as it can run the software well. I am the ship of Theseus, the meat parts of my mind and body have all been replaced many times, every cell in my body is a copy of a copy of a copy made with new materials. But I'm not just a meat computer, I'm a unique and constantly changing configuration of neurological software with my own highly personalized settings and memory cache. If I could make a copy there would be two of me, the copy would have no less claim to being me than the original. We'd likely evolve into two very different people given enough time but we would both have an equal claim to the same root identity. In my experience people who insist otherwise are just being arbitrary. That's how I see it anyway.
@Hahalol663
@Hahalol663 8 лет назад
I've always been troubled by this viewpoint. I understand the reasons for believing in it, but at the same time there are a few issues that I see as conflicting with the theory. If the only thing that defines "you" or "me" is the software that our body operates, is my experience of the world as a continuous being through time an illusion? If I make an exact copy of myself and there is no physical way of determining the difference between it and the original, why is it that I still experience the world through the eyes of one and not the other? Better yet: if I compare the present me with future me, let's say 50 years forward in time, there are very few ways in which we are the same. Actually, I probably have more things in common with one of my current friends than future me. Yet, I still identify with this person and it's natural to assume that in some way, I will be there and experience the world through his eyes. Is this a trick that our brains play on us?
@SocialistSkeptic
@SocialistSkeptic 8 лет назад
Panda Pandemic An exact copy would have equal claim to your root identity but from that point you and your duplicate would diverge, potentially into substantially different people due to divergent experiences. The software is constantly evolving, version 4.0 may not even resemble version 20.7.

Minds are software entities, not neuron hardware configurations. Learning means software building. Intelligence only comes from software systems. Software means information stored in a memory system. As we age, we accumulate more software in our cortex memory system. This is same as accumulating more mind. There is no general intelligence that comes from your biological hardware, nor does any self exist there. Its all software. In all working memory systems, the hardware and software exist completely separately, like oil and water. There is no such thing as hardware perception, problem solving, or self. As we live our lives there is a continuum of software selves, from no-mind to best-mind. If you duplicate a software self (copy the software), you get two software selves that experience-diverge into the future making increasingly separate minds. If you erase the software (or are a newborn) you have no mind at all.

To see yourself as a vessel that simply holds who you are is my correct way of looking at this. The ship of Theseus should not be seen as a thing but rather an idea, the ship holds a memory, a memory of the great adventure of a great person. If the ship that they have now presents that idea then I believe that that should be the original. Anyone can say they have the real deal but really, that is the ship that everyone agrees is the real thing. The same as you, what ideas or stories you bring just by being you is you. What if when you die, the dead corpse in the ground isn't you it's the ending of you, just as the sunset isn't the day itself. The memories that are associated with you is what make up you. What is truly more you, a meat sack controlled by a meat blob, or an idea that brings memories of your past, present, and perhaps future?

I have come to think of "who am I?" from a different perspective. For me it is an equation with constant and variable factors. The key isn't in finding the solution to the equation, it is in finding the factors that are constant. The solution to the equation will always vary, as time in itself can never be constant, but you will be in peace with yourself as long as you realize/find/understand the factors that are constant for you. The most content of people that I've met have had atleast 2 of these factors in common as a constant i.e. Faith (not necessarily god), companionship (friend, family, gf) and passion for what they do.

This is why belief in metaphysical concepts like the soul or 'I consciousness ' is crucial to solving these paradoxes. Let's say, a 50-year-old man is both physically and biologically distinct from his 15-year-old teen self. Yet there is still a voice that exists questioning his identity all through the years. That's the soul. It's constant.

Since I was around 6 I have been pondering about my existence, not so much after I grew up though, there will often be times where I come into deep thoughts about myself, thinking about why am I able to control myself, my body and my mind, and the deeper I go into it the more it frightens me, until a point where I feel I am in an absolute void. The feeling of having complete power over something becomes unusual. I tried asking if my peers have this kind of feeling but no one does. Its still bizarre and terrifying to me, but I don't hate it as all the vivid thoughts and feelings becomes part of who I am.

The ship repair example reminds me of an episode of Futurama, where Hermes experienced a similar conflict of identity as he replaced more and more of himself with robotic parts. Until his brain was replaced, he essentially believed he was still himself; however his friends and family disagreed. So perhaps until the LAST piece of the original ship was replaced, it retained its identity as the original ship?

The ship that was reassembled in this example with be the original ship and the one in the doc would be a copy and this goes for humans to as roughly over the course of 10 years there is not a single cell in your body that hasn't been replaced so a 20 year old person is not the same person physically as they were when they were 10 however the continuation of consciousness is what is important here as the cells in your brain responsible for passing elrctical pattern signals are replaced if the signal pattern remains the same then YOU remain YOU so i'd personally say memory is what makes a person themselves.

We are always changing as people throughout our time on earth and each experience alters us in some way. It is impossible to stay the same as you live your life, mentally and physically. The only way to define who you are is by your actions as you wander through these uncharted waters, just like in the video. How you live your life and how you interact with the other wanderers distinguishes each and every person that has ever lived on this planet. How you act creates this mindset to other people of how you are "supposed' to be like, but this is not true to you. You know and see how you change throughout time and create new identities or new "you's". This changing is good and shows that you are growing just like nature intended it to be. Who am I? I'm me, who are you?

If an "I" exists, it can never know itself to exist. Let me explain what I mean: All that you can observe cannot be you because that observation requires an observer. The "me" that you are defining with your likes and dislikes, your thoughts, feelings or your body is a result of your cultural indoctrination and influence of people around you, and it can't really be you because who is the "I" that's defining the "me"? In the words of Alan Watts, you cannot bite your own teeth, the knife can't cut itself and light can't shine on itself. I would argue that it's not supposed to, and the same goes with us. So the moment you say "I am.." you are referring to someone that isn't really there(the ego).... For a comparison, we don't see water as something that is made up of molecules, we clearly understand that the molecules *are* the water. There isn't water that has 2 molecules of H and one O, they're not separate, they're one and the same. And that are the reasons why I can't understand why someone would believe in a ridiculous thing like a soul.. The very concept of a soul is too simple an answer don't you think? I seriously challenge someone to debunk this. lol please.

+Ivan Božić ...."I" cannot be observed but can be inferred. What I observe is the the entire outer universe that's not "I"... so what's left is "I". From our viewpoint as the observer, the observable universe plus "I" forms the entire universe set. Consciousness by definition is the awareness of "I" as a distinct entity separate from the universe. The reason why consciousness as a scientific topic is so vague is because it cannot have an absolute definition... it is true *only from the point of view of the observer*. As a result, consciousness cannot (as yet) be scientifically proved. For example, I know with 100% certainty that I am conscious... but I have absolutely no scientific way to prove that *you* are also conscious. For all I know, the outside world doesn't exist at all - I am in the Matrix with electrical impulses directly fed into my brain to simulate the world and all other people in it, including you. There is no way for me to disprove it because I can never sense anything outside of those electrical impulses being fed into my brain. If i cannot measure it using my available senses, then I cannot prove it. (Turing test is an attempt to scientifically / mathematically prove consciousness, but it fails to differentiate between consciousness and simulated artificial intelligence.) As far as "Soul" is concerned... I personally think that's just a label we put on this undefinable concept of "I" that to us appears as separate from the universe. The concept of my own "Soul" is very personal - because the very nature of "I" is starkly personal. The concept of "I" or "my soul" might feel 100% real to me, but to the outside world, utter rubbish. You see me as an ordinary physical entity existing in this universe... while I see myself as a unique entity, distinctly separated from the universe. This leads to metaphysical concepts such as "soul" - something that transcends this universe - because I believe that I am separate from the universe. It is very personal, because each and every individual's experience is 100% subjective and knowable only to themselves.

2:17 My theory is that we aren't the parts that make up who we are, but the specific and unique way they come together. When a piece of ourself is replaced, the old part stops being a part of us, because it doesn't contribute to our identity anymore, and it's the reverse for the new part. In this sense, the atoms and particles that build us come and go, so they aren't what our identity is for the eternity of time. However, it's how the parts that come and go combine together and form us that makes us who we are. Basically, we are the blueprint of ourself, not the materials for building it. Would a bunch of metal beams and screws on the ground be the same as the building that it creates?

this is a question of personal Identity question do we have an identity?? if yes, what is the source of identity ?? and is it a permanent identity or is it a temporary identity? can we maintain our identity?? John lock, who is a philosopher, explained it in practice.

"I" am the information contained in my neural network -- the way the neurons are connected to each other. This may be extended to the entire body to some extent. But ultimately it's the *information* that matters, and not the material storing that information. Just like a digital photo is defined/identified by the information (sequence of 0's and 1's) and not the hard disk on which it is stored or the network cable that it's transmitted through.

I agree with you. The human brain learns by itself. You are the software you built through experiences, the rest of your body is your property but it is not you. Humans are not different from machines.

The way your neurons are connected to each other is constantly changing - so is it still you?

I am a soul who was dynamic enough to have survived the changes in the past and who now wishes to mark his name in history by doing something great but is uncertain whether destiny allows him to do so and thus spends his days trying his best to fulfill his lofty ambitions.

If you are saying changing the ships part gradually = the same ship. What if you change every part at once? The only thing changing is the length of the time you have spent changing parts.

you bring up a good point. what do you think people with multiple personality disorder identify as?
@MarkShaneHansen
@MarkShaneHansen 8 лет назад
Michelle B I'm wondering if someone with multiple personalities can "go into it" as one person, and be "cured" in the way that they now only have one personality, but it is not the one they began with; it is one of the OTHER personalities. And if doctors have no access to relatives who can account for who the person originally was, can one distinguish between the "real" and "made up" personalities?
@jihanehamdane937

+Mark The Gr8 it's no longer called multiple personnality disorder , but DID , dissociative identity disorder , it's not you making up different personnalities , but rather your identity being shattered into pieces , it's as if your body no longer recognizes your hand as a part of it , and processes it as a different being , so basically all of these "made up personalities" are a fragment of what you identify as , taking different forms in your body , your brain treats them as a foreign identity it's no longer an "i" but a "you"

+TheCheungDan Using your logic, the ship is its' parts. Once the ship is damaged to the point of no longer being a ship, it no longer exists. If you take this logic to who you are, then once your body changes, you are no longer yourself. But the identify of an item is easier to define as parts, rather than the identity of a constantly changing person, isn't it? There's no right or wrong answer to this. That is why some people get divorced and say "s/he isn't who I fell in love with anymore" and such. Those have labeled certain "parts" (physical looks, money, personality traits) as key identifiers, so when one or multiple parts change, they deem the person isn't that person anymore.
