Honestly, I have the same top 3! Also, I honestly agree with Sawyer being Number 3. Many would argue that Gary should at least be Number 3, but I believe Sawyer is actually stronger than Gary. Sawyer managed to clash/hold his own evenly with Ash’s Kalos team, which could hold their own against the likes of Legendary Pokémon, the likes of Alain, and even a Champion. Now Sawyer has been mentored, potentially trained, by Champion Steven Stone himself 🪨 Hot take, but he just might be a contender with Paul 😈 Also, although I will admit Alain has the stronger ace Pokémon, I don’t think the power gap between Paul and Alain is that big at that point, especially if Ash is at least on par with Alain, and Paul was still able to overwhelm Ash during their battle at Oak’s lab. Although Paul lost that battle at Oak’s lab, there’s an argument he could’ve won that battle if he really wanted to, since his Metagross easily dodged Shadow Ball, but “didn’t” dodge the notably slower and less accurate Will O Wisp, likely to test the effects of how strong Gengar’s new Will O Wisp was, and prepare Gengar for another incoming Meteor Mash. If Paul genuinely wanted to defeat Ash, he probably could’ve, and definitely could’ve in that battle if he really wanted. In fact, Paul probably could’ve entered and even held his own in the Master’s 8 if he actually entered the tournament. Here’s how I see it: Alain definitely has the stronger ace, in his Mega Charizard. No doubt about that. But Alain’s other Pokémon probably aren’t near as powerful as his Mega Charizard, so they might not be as strong as Paul’s, and Paul trains a bunch of his Pokémon regularly to keep the balance up. So it’s likely that most of his Pokémon are at least as strong as his Masters’ 8 inspired team that overwhelmed and intensely pressured Ash’s Masters’ 8 team, maybe some a little stronger. While there’s definitely lots of evidence and reason for Alain to take the Number 1 spot, there is an argument that the gap isn’t that big between the number 1 and 2 spots. Hell, with everything considered, maybe the gap between all 3 of these trainers isn’t as big as it initially seems.
I would say Paul is a better rival than Alain For the simple reason that he was a way more strategic trainer and has many powerhoses on his team In other hand Alain manly relies to only the brutal strength of his zard X other than it i would say only bisharp is as worthy
Pretty much my perspective too. While Alain has a stronger ace, most of Paul’s Pokémon are likely stronger than most of Alain’s other Pokémon. Plus, if Paul has been keeping tabs on Alain and/or watched his battles in the Kalos League, which I’m guessing he has, judging by Paul’s Metagross practically mirroring Alain’s, I think Paul can come up with a good strategy and team to take care of Alain’s Charizard, and have the power, skill, and capability to pull it off.
