An amazing overview of Australian bands. The best I have seen from a non Australian on RU-vid, by far. I grew up there and the first concert I went to ( in 1982 ) was a summer outdoor do 4 bands for 4 bucks sponsored by the popular AM rock station of the day. Two of the bands on the bill were The Church and The Divinyls both great live bands. You’ve got The Church covered so I will only suggest that for The Divinyls you get their first self titled album which opens with an Easybeats cover and an EP called “Monkeygrip” both are great and quite frankly miles better than their later stuff. If you like Crime and the City Solution then try a band called The Wreckery. Not brilliant but fun. Others have mentioned The Scientists. They were a great swamp rock band. Amazing live. Lastly I would also like to chime in on Midnight Oil. Their early albums are very hard rocking “Head Injuries” and “Place without a postcard” are well worth getting. As is their later album “Earth and Sun and Moon”. They’ve just put out an album called “Resist” which is a great return to form. Someone posted about seeing them live and being blown away. They were always a great, great, live band but 1980 thru the early 90s they were an absolute force of nature. They wiped the floor with most other rock bands. Case in point, I first saw them on the 10-1 tour and left the venue absolutely stunned. I felt like I’d been run over by a fleet of tanks. Nothing I’ve seen since has come close to the intensity of that concert, nothing. Interestingly I went to see U2 on their “War” tour at the same venue 6 months later and they were utterly limp by comparison. So anyway, great video!

Hi J B! Happy to read this comment! Oh man, the Church and Divinyls on the same bill...that must have been well, divine! I have been on the lookout for that first Divinyls LP and will keep looking. Not too easy to track their stuff down around here for whatever reason. I'll check out the Wreckery. I appreciate the recommendations. I have the pink album from the Scientists but just didn't feature them here. Lots of love for Midnight Oil here and I'm definitely curious in pulling up some of their live footage from the 80s/early 90s for sure. Sounds like seeing them live indeed left quite an impression on you. Awesome! :-)
@merlinthemagus
@merlinthemagus 2 года назад
If you want to check out some early live Oils then “Midnight Oil at Tanelorn” or “Midnight Oil at Wanda beach” is the way to go. You’ll get an idea and yet unless you experienced it in the flesh… Midnight Oil much like The Who have produced some amazing and seminal albums but they were both such great live bands that the studio stuff always paled by comparison. Also never was a huge INXS fan but saw them on their tour supporting “Shebooh Shebah” and they were a very good live band ( Sandii & the sunsetz were the support ).An INXS album that I would recommend highly is “The swing” a really great mix of pop but with an experimental twist.

Midnight Oil is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Sure, they get critical praise and popular acknowledgment, but they never get credit as being one of the all time greats, which they are...at least to me! 10-1 is a great choice, and I would also highly recommend Blue Sky Mining, my personal favorite. I'm not always the biggest fan of political rock, but like the Clash they pull it off with their intelligence, lyrical poetry, and most of all the passion and the commitment of their performances.

I am a huge Midnight Oil fan as well. 10-1 is a great choice, but they have so many great albums. And they are amazing live. I am also a huge fan of The Church. "Heyday" is one of their best albums, but top spot goes to "Priest=Aura". Like Hanna said, it takes you to another place.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert at risk of repeating someone else here (and getting laughed out of the house by fellow Aussies), give Ratcat's 'Blind Love' a try. Their first 7inch e.p with the seeker and an early version of alone with you are awesome. The midnight oil albums that are worth mentioning and favourites of mine are the first self titled, head injuries and red sails in the sunset. It was great to hear you talk about The Triffids and to see your Triffids vinyl, I love them as well. 'In The Pines' is a gem of an album and 'Born Sandy Devotional' is a masterpiece. I don't think 'The Black Swan', their last album released in 1989, got the credit it deserved. I'm not sure people knew quite what to make of it. There was pure pop like 'Goodbye Little Boy' and even a gentle foot dipped into the hip-hop explosion back then with the track 'Spinning Top Song'. It was originally conceived as a double album which has now been released as a CD, with the tracks the record company axed from the original release. I don't know if you own it but it is worth having for the tracks 'Too Hot to Move' and 'New Year's Greetings', both classics in my opinon and both show so sadly what we lost when we lost the late great David McComb. Great video as usual.

Glad you mentioned Courtney Barnett and Rolling Blackouts for current artists. Another recent artist I might mention is Parma Violets, although its been a few years since I've hearch much about them. Regarding INXS, I definitely consider myself a fan, but I'm partial to their early output leading up to and including Listen Like Thieves. As for Midnight Oil, never been a big fan. Fav Dead Can Dance CD is "Toward The Within." That album really resonates with me. I like The Birthday Party but not so much Nick Cave solo material. I've not listened to Roland Howard...will have to check that out. C&TCS is a decent listen as is Dirty Three. Divinyls! My #1 favorite band of all time. The album you showed, "What A Life," is excellent. I love all their stuff. I have an Aussie pressing of their first LP which has the songs in a different order and a different song than the U.S. pressing. "Temperamental" is great and as you see on my Discogs I picked that up at the record show last weekend. Been wanting that for years. It really saddened me when Divinyls' singer, Chrissie Amphlett, passed away a few years ago. Her voice is like no other. Midnight Oil is another top Aussie pick for me. I have "Blue Sky Mining" on blue vinyl plus several of their CDs. Want their box set! I like The Church's album "Starfish" the most. I saw most of those bands live at there peak. Sunnyboys are doing their farewell gig next month here in Sydney. I have seen midnight oil about 30 times and recommend the DVD live at goat island. Hoodoo Gurus are great and still performing. I saw The Stems & Radio Birdman about 2 years ago and better than ever. I was a judge at youth rock when Silverchair got signed. They were the called “Innocent Criminals”. I saw there potential and recommended to Sony that they give them a go and record “Tomorrow” off the frog stomp album. I’m happy to give you any help with your Australian music videos as I know a fare bit and am so proud of our music industry. Keep up the good work. Cheers - Aussie Vinyl Guy.

As an Australian, I'm super impressed with the breadth and depth of your collection. Far be it for me to try and convert you into a Nick Cave fan but, as you're into Dirty Three, I'nm not sure if you realised that for the last 10 years or more Warren Ellis has been Nick's right hand and the two have co-written all the music. If you don't dig the early bluesy, seedy stuff, check out The Boatman's Call which is very gentle and just sublime but the music he's made more recently with Ellis is something else, my favourite being Push The Sky Away. Also, the Church have a much more recent record, The Hypnogouge, that is really terrific.

Wow I’ve just seen a few of your videos and I’m so very impressed with your knowledge, collection and most of all your love of music. You remind me of a dear friend of mine we could talk for hours on end about music. I had a band in the 80’s and we got the opportunity to do about 2 weeks of shows with the Hoodoo Gurus. if I remember correctly they were touring for the Blow Your Cool record. They were so much fun to watch every night. And they were a great bunch of people to work with. Thanks and I’m sure that I’ll be watching more.

Once again, knocked it out of the park! Roland S Howard, the Dirty Three, the Hoodoo Gurus....can't go wrong with any of these. Saw the Guru's at Peoney Park (before your time I guess) with the Bangles. Great show. Not sure, but I think Warren Ellis may be my spirit animal. Saw him and Nick Cave in March here in Asheville. What a killer show, and such an under-rated talent. Read his book if you haven't yet!

Dude, Hoodoo Gurus with the Bangles at Peony Park?! Dang. I remember Peony Park. Excellent idea to focus on one country and you've done a sparkling job. Must admit to not being acquainted with many of the bands you mentioned but can vouch for Radio Birdman and The Easybeats, two terrific groups. As for The Saints, well you know how I feel about them. Here's what I wrote about them in my article on the top 15 punk albums. (I think you have Prehistoric Sounds on that Saints 2CD package. I should have raved about it a bit more in my writeup. It is wonderful!) "The Saints first appeared in Brisbane, Australia in 1973. The four members were high school buddies living under a heavily conservative state government. There is a post on RU-vid with only fair sound of them playing a gig in 1974 in punk style. (The similarities between The Saints and Ramones are striking. Both were serving up punk in 1974 and both recorded three great albums in a row with their original line-ups before personnel changes.) After being rejected by every label in Australia they released "I'm Stranded" bw "No Time" on their own Fatal label in September 1976, the remarkable single actually reaching #96 on the Aussie charts. It was re-pressed on British labels and got rave reviews. Sounds magazine called it "Single of this and every week." Jon Savage wrote about the 45 "...the toughest, most brutal noise yet. The Saints' "(I'm) Stranded" sounded as though it had been recorded in a wind tunnel, with the singer and the rhythm section hanging as gusts of guitar noise rushed past them." For a very short time they were the darlings of the fledgling punk world and with the wind at their back they recorded their classic debut album, (I'm) Stranded, in just two days in Australia. Ten marvelous songs filled with surging waves of buzz-saw guitar and superb musicianship, "('m) Stranded" is a classic of the genre. What a racket they served up, much of the lyrics indecipherable under the noise. Singer Chris Bailey barks out songs filled with alienation. bitterness and resentment as in the title song. There's not a dud on the album. Plenty of fast punk as well as ballads like "Messin' With The Kid" and mid-tempo songs like "Story Of Love" are all beautifully rendered. Ed Kuepper, guitar, Kym Bradshaw, bass and Ivor Hay, drums, are one blitzing force. The Saints second album, Eternally Yours, adds horns on some songs and, no joke, is just as good as the debut. Their third LP, Prehistoric Sounds, finds them leaving punk for a more bluesy, jazzy sound, but believe me it is terrific too. None of these albums were big commercial successes; the lads did not fit in with the punk image. The snobby British press did not like their long hair, Bailey's sloppy appearance (he sometimes smoked a cigarette on stage) and the fact they did cover songs didn’t help. But Nick Cave has said, "They were kind of god-like to me and my colleagues. They were just always so much better than everybody else. It was extraordinary to go and see a band that was so anarchic and violent." And Sir Bob Geldof has stated " Rock music in the 70's was altered by three bands: Sex Pistols, The Ramones and The Saints."

Wonderful video! For a small(ish) country Australia really punches above its weight for interesting music. I am partially on board with you about The Birthday Party. I saw them live on their last tour when I was in High School and it was one of the most intense and memorable concerts I have seen. But do I listen to them now? Apart from Release The Bats, not really. But I do appreciate the unholy racket they produced. Nick Cave solo I could again always enjoy in concert, with his deranged preacher schtick but never felt the need to live with his records. Until 2004 and Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus. From that release on I have been pretty devoted. Great o see Ed Kuepper solo get a mention. He has such a huge catalog it can be intimidating. Everybody's Got To is his stab at a more commercial sound. I do enjoy it but if you dig deeper I am sure you will find more that will get you excited. Have you listened to The Laughing Clowns? His band between The Saints and solo? I hope you get around to covering New Zealand music. I would love to see who catches your attention. Thanks again, great video

Must haves Australian bands - The Mark Of Cain - Ill At Ease, signed to Henry Rollins label 1995ish features the drummer from Helmet and yes it does sound like Helmet but TMOC was playing that stuff way before Helmut. Regardless this is a fucking incredible album and a must have. good luck finding it. The Meanies - 10% Wierd. Catchy as hell pop punk and all the 90's stuff... all killer releases. Australia's answer to the Ramones? Buffalo - Volcanic Rock 1973. These guys were doing it before ACDC and this is a killer album for it time. A good copy will cost you into the 100's. Rose Tattoo - ST 1978.... just a killer rock n roll album... no words needed. Cosmic Psychos - Self Totalled. Straight outta Melbourne punk rock, Butch Vig said they influenced the seattle scene.... A must have. OK just a few but many more must haves. Dig and Spin!!!!

Have seen The Church three times, first in 1990 on the Gold Afternoon Fix tour and twice in the last decade, all in Vancouver. The last time I did a meet and greet with the band. Had a nice chat with each of the guys and got pics with each of them and with the group as a whole. Have you checked out Jack Frost? It was a 1990s side project of Steve Kilbey and Grant McLennan. Two albums issued to little fanfare but both worth hearing. Looking forward to more!

Good onions Hanna! As an ex-Aussie I can vouch for much you have shown, with many of my favorites as well, including the Hoodoo Gurus, Saints (with their unique punk sound), You am I, Radio Birdman (the latter played in my hometown Deventer three years ago; old men these days). Not to forget the Easy Beats (there is a nice movie about them BTW ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ktKMIFrTkwA.html). Bands like Midnight Oil and INXS were more successfully mainstream; as were Men at work (not in your list, but quite essential rock from the land downunda). I remember a great Midnight Oil gig on Adelaide University's campus and with a thunderstorm in the background, fitting their new album cover at the time. I always had a lot of respect for Peter Garrett as an outspoken environmentalist. In a way similar to Midnight Oil is Goanna. And there is much more in terms of 1980s new wave type bands, much featured on Molly Meldrum's (an Australian DJ/Music critic) Countdown. Bands like Ganggajang, Australian Crawl, Jimmy Barnes, Rose Tattoo, Divinyls, Skyhooks, Noiseworks etc. Stuff I wasn't much into. AC/DC are great, if one is in the mood for it! I think you will like Pseudo Echo, similar to Depeche Mode or their Australian counterpart; more or less or perhaps a bit more poppy. Not my cuppa tea though. Also new wave and a bit postpunk is Icehouse; a popular Australian band of the time with successes in Europe. I used to enjoy their synth music. The Church crossed my ears many times, but they never stuck in my mind. Not in your list, but I think relevant from the 1980s and more off the beaten track or indie and punk are Exploding White Mice (Stooges and Radio Birdman inspired punk rock from Adelaide; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JHGDJRKcBWk.html), v.Spy v.Spy (or Spy versus Spy; a band with many protest songs still relevant today, including their song 'credit cards') and The Scientists (with a nice compilation out for a while now on Numero). The Cosmic Psychos are definitely one of my favorite Aussie bands, which I still play a lot these days; especially their earlier work. There are of course many interesting contemporary bands or artists, that I fail much to intercept on the other side of the Earth these days. My favorites include Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin, The Goon Sax (jangle pop reminiscent of New Zealand's The Clean; and BTW the lead singer of the Goon Sax is the son of the lead singer of the Go-Betweens). There is also the Dirty Three.... The Birthday Party, despite having listened several times over the years, don't tickle my fancy either. I only like some of Nick Cave and the Bad Seed's work. I don't like Amyl and the Sniffers; too punk gimmicky to my mind. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard? I still don't know whether I like them, but the only cd I have of them hasn't been played for ages. Most recent, this evening I saw an Aussie band called Mess Esque ( a bit like Dirty Three but with female vocals) as support act to Kurt Vile; not bad actually. But, as we are digging in the Southern Hemisphere, I really prefer - and Aussies will perhaps boo me for it - 'Kiwi' or Dunedin indie pop and rock over Australian rock - the Saints and Cosmic Psycho's - as exception. I guess it lies in the sophistication of the music/musicianship, with the kiwi's to my mind more refined. This friendly rivalry is also funnily portrayed in HBO's Flight of the Conchords (recommended if you have not seen it!) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qTwAoFR4DuM.html Everytime I am back in Australia I do enjoy the much more rock oriented radio culture - with reference to many of the bands you showed - than here in the Netherlands.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert No worries mate! Glad you checked Ice House. Oh boy, I did some soul searching with that music at the time. I forgot to name another Aussie (part Kiwi) band and one of my favorites , namely The Moles/Richard Davies in the sphere of Post-Punk, Jangle pop; indie. And with spin-offs in Cardinal and Eric Matthews (the latter with a great voice and to my mind one of those great underrated artists. Mess Esque didn't hook onto me actually, but it was great to see an Aussie band at the Kurt Vile gig. I do appreciate Kurt Vile. His duo recordings with Courtney Barnett is great. Mentioned in a my previous message are Spy v Spy; one of the to my mind true Aussie post-punk bands (from Adelaide) of the mid-1980s. I curse the day I sold their cd's a long time ago, now seeking them back, but very rare to find. That might be a grail to get if you like them; or check them out. They deeply addressed Australian societal issues at the time. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oeZoqgTkEMM.html I am glad you scored Zen Arcade at last. Do not sleep on all of the pre-Free Dirt Died Pretty material. They're singles and 12" EP's that are arguably better than Free Dirt, which in my opinion is their best stuff. and they're def. worth searching for. There is also a deluxe CD version of Free Dirt with all of those tracks as well as live material, if you want to go that route. I would have sequenced the CD differently tho and put the live stuff on a third disc, and then put the pre Free Dirt studio stuff on it's own disc in the order of release, and then the original sequence of the LP on it's own disc, the one you have (non Aussie version) has different songs than the original. I just looked on discogs and the original singles and EP's are pretty cheap, and available. Try for the 12" version of 'out of the unknown' because it has their second single 'mirror blues' as one long song, instead of broken up into two tracks like on the 7". Then get the 'next to nothing' 12" and 'blue sky day' 12". I think that get's you all the tracks you'd need since some were already added to the What Goes On version of the LP. Back in the day I made a cassette of all these tracks plus the 'Stoneage Cinderella' 7", and it made for a very strong LP's worth of material. Mind you, I love 'Free Dirt' as well; I must have listened to the opening track 'Life to go' 20 times in a row before I let the rest of the LP play through, the day I bought it. I've wanted a Gibson ES-335 for almost forty years just based on the guitar tone of that solo. Anyway, trust me, you'll really like those 12"s.

When the church first appeared, the Aussia music press had them down as a boy band because they wore make-up and were good looking. After Seance didn't sell well in Australia, the same Ausie press thought of the Church as a busted flush, commenting that they were past their sell by date, hence the Church named their next album 'Heyday' sarcastically, and wasn't it just. I always struggled with the fact that both Kilby and Wilson Piper were born in England, and so initially didn't see them as an Aussie band.

I have Young Modern on vinyl actually, picked it up last year from Music On Vinyl. Blue Colored pressing. Daniel Johns has gone through a lot. There's a PODCAST series that was done I want to say earlier this year, or late last year with him, telling his story. It's a documentary on audio. He did some other music after Silverchair broke up. A Solo album that sadly flopped, kind of trying to soul/r&b. He also had a collaboration with a guy from the band Empire of the Sun, called "Dreams.' Sadly, that also never went too far with me and other fans. I think currently he's not doing music. He has been auctioning off things though and printing merch and other items related to Silverchair, at least.
