On today's episode of Locked on NHL, Seth Toupal and JD Young look at which teams and players are the biggest winners and losers in the Western Conference after free agency. We start with Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks, who have added several key pieces in Tyler Bertuzzi and Teuvo Teravainen, as well as the return of Taylor Hall to form a legitimate top-six around the Bedard in his sophomore season. Then we discuss the Vegas Golden Knights and the issues they have at left wing after losing a lot of talent in free agency this offseason and if the credit card bill has come due, plus Ryan Suter gets bought out... again. We also finish up with the Colorado Avalanche stuck being able to do very little in free agency, Dustin Wolf now able to claim a full-time NHL role, and the future of Yaroslav Askarov with the Nashville Predators.

I think of, starting at the 16:00 mark of the video, the Jets as far from winners during this month's free agent frenzy (FAF). Kevin Cheveldayoff, with the tenure of Ken Holland as GM of the Oilers done, remains the only GM of a Canadian NHL team appointed before the 2019-20 season, with that tenure, which began in June 2011, having featured oversight of: - 3 playoff series wins - 6 straight seasons of no conference final appearances - 3 straight seasons of no playoff series win - 9 straight playoff games (over series in 2023 against the Golden Knights and last spring against the Avs) of 4 or more goals allowed (1-8 record over those series), making July's FAF a missed opportunity to add hard-hitting Chris Tanev-type defensemen (if not Tanev himelf among them) to beef up what during their last two playoff series had been a thin blueline (and with no notable Tanev-type addition is likely to continue to be overwhelmed in the postseason)

The 20:30 mark features the beginning of discussion about the Flames. Dustin Wolf did get to play some games in the NHL last regular season, but whether of FAF the Flames were winners isn’t so clear. That said, they did have 10 draft picks, and while most are simply just magic beans, it may be that because all but one were already playing for Canadian or contiguous US-based major-junior teams, quite a few of them will, in a couple seasons time be playing for the Wranglers of the AHL. at least Craig Conroy knew the time had last regular season come to revamp a Flames’ team that from the 1989-90 season to two seasons ago, had, in all but one of them, not even made it to a conference final and hadn’t even won playoff series in consecutive seasons. How long this rebuild goes still remains anyone’s guess although I’m sure fans of the team will want that rebuild to lead to the near-consistent playoff success the Golden Knights, from the 2017-18 to 2022-23 season, had.

What could the sharks give up to acquire Askarov? I feel like the sharks could definitely trade Granlund, Ferraro, and Bystedt for Askarov and Fabbro? Thoughts?
