I always thought the term “original bender” meant the thing that taught people to bend. The lion turtles gave people the ability to bend, but sky bison, dragons, badgermoles and the moon were the people who taught the benders how to bend properly and effectively
My thoughts exactly like that would also explain why some people DONT have the ability to bend even if they try (like the eldest son of aang) it was given to them by the lion turtles to protect themselves and they needed a way to learn it so comes the moon, dragons, badgers, and bysons I thought it was a pretty simple explanation but everytime I read hate about korra they always state this fact I don’t hate lok nor is it my favorite but at least try to understand it as it’s own show
Yue probably didn’t “bend” water like Katara or the men of the Northern Tribe since their customs were that women learned to use their bending for healing purposes. if Yue did have bending abilities she probably learned healing.
Yeah she probably would've been a skilled bender if the northern water tribe wasn't so sexist. Then she turned into the moon (that's rough buddy) so she never really got a chance to learn.

So uh. In order to bend the elements, your chi has to be unblocked in such a way that you are compatible with that element. It seems to be at least partially genetic, since we have the tribes and nations and such. But that's all that's required -- something in your DNA says "Hey, this guy's fire chakra works and he can bend fire." Unfortunately, not everyone's chi passages are open enough, and that's why we see some nonbenders in the world -- they *could* bend if their chi were flowing appropritately; it's just blocked. Also why every air nomad is a bender -- they live a life that focuses on freeing their chakra. I imagine if all people did, we would discover that there's no such thing as a nonbender. It's most likely a single slot in your DNA that is one of the four elements, with mutations existing occasionally, as we see in Bolin (a lavabender with a parent from both the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom). But that's all conjecture and beside the point. Prior to the lion turtles interfering with the humans, the Moon & Friends were able to bend the elements. The lion turtles didn't "give the humans bending". The lion turtles simply unblocked the chi passages so that the humans *could* bend, much in the same way that Ty Lee blocks the chi passages so that they can't. But just because humans have the ability to bend an element hardwired into their DNA doesn't mean that they know how to do it. Humans have the ability to do cartwheels, but I imagine most people would never think to do a cartwheel on their own without having first seen other people doing them or being taught how. Or perhaps a human's capacity for language would be a better comparison. This extends to Aang and energybending as well -- the lion turtle didn't "grant him some new form of bending". Rather, the lion turtle opened up a previously blocked chi passage within him.
So harmonic convergence unblocked a bunch of of people chi, and it just so happens that they have an affinity for air Which means the lion turtles just unblocked chi, and didn't give bending Which also means the animals that can bend just have unblocked chi
@@zrc1514 I just think that they are still learning you have to take into account that the air benders were a centuries old culture that had that time to learn how to teach. Everything is kinda starting over with the air nation in LOK so they only had what aang new about air bending and the teachings of the nation to go off. He was only a kid barely ingulfed by being taught that doesn't mean he knew everything that they were teaching or going to teach. He just knew what they had already taught him which I can imagine is not very much considering they had to tell him early that he was the avatar. He then runs away before even hearing all that they talk about that's why he barely knows anything about being the avatar and has to learn from his past lives.
No there are definitely benders and nonbenders. We clearly see that every bender in the world was able to bend from a very young age, while some people just didn’t have that ability at all. This is the conflict that starts legend of korra. Nonbenders are fighting because they’re tired of benders being so superior and using that to oppress people without that capability. Katara and Sokka were both raised the exact same way and yet she can bend and he can’t. She didn’t have any teacher or anything either, she just had the ability to move water but didn’t really know how to utilise it best. If what you said is really the case then any bender could just go ahead and bend a different element by learning it. To me bending is all about genetics, it’s a recessive gene that only shows up in some people. Think of it as blue eye colour. If both your parents are blue eyed then you will be too. If you don’t have blue eyes then you can still carry the gene and pass it on to your kids and grandkids as long as your partner also carry that gene. This is the reason why all of the air nomads are benders, they only live with other benders meaning there’s no nonbending DNA present to make the children nonbenders. If you make sure to marry another bender then yeah your kids are most likely going to be benders as well which is why some families are filled with them and other families have very few benders. Some people can bend, others can’t, that’s just the truth. But just because you have the ability to bend doesn’t mean you’re an expert on how to do it, you need to be taught by someone who is already a master of the element in order to use your bending effectively. Just like the people learned from the original benders after being granted bending by lion turtles.
What’s also odd is that Zuko refers to the dragons as “the original fire benders” but in book one, around the same time the moon is declared the original water bender Zuko refers to the sun as having a similar effect to the moon. He tells Katara “you get your power from the moon, I get mine from the sun” which at first viewing made me think that the Sun is the Original Firebender
The sun is the source of fire bending similarly to the comet being a source to draw it from without affecting fire directly, the moon would work in a similar way, except that it does physically affect the water which is how it becomes the first bender
well, you probably cant take energy from thin air. You probably take the energy from sun and use it to create and bend fire. Or you take sozins comets energy and use thats energy.
Firebending comes from energy control: the sun is the source of all energy. Technically the sun is the source for everything, except maybe the spirits, but for Firebending, it's more direct and obvious.
One thing I like about Avatar is how everything ties into each characters search for purpose in life Aang knows his purpose but rejects it Katara knows her purpose but not to it’s extent Sokka has no clue what his purpose is and has to discover it Zuko thinks his purpose is one thing but then discovers it’s something completely different Iroh found his purpose and try’s to help others with discovering theirs Toph is told her purpose is one thing but forged her own Azula knows her purpose but wishes for it to be grander than it is And you can keep going deeper with ever character, I think it is a very cool part of the series and would be really interested in seeing you guys make a video discussing it
That + I love the idea that (some) nonbenders can bend elements, just not the ones their parents could (like if a nonbender from a water tribe could actually earth bend) - it would make 0 sense how that happened, but it's an idea I like *shrug*

They are given bending from the lion turtles with the two finger touch, but people mastered it by following the dragons, bison, tides, and bagger moles. That is my take at least.

They referred to the Bison, Dragons, Badger Moles, and the Moon/Ocean spirits as “the original benders,” there was never a mention of what actually gave people the ability to telekinetically manipulate elements. It doesn’t break the continuity at all. You can have the ability to throw punches and kicks, but have no technique or efficiency in actual combat . Actual martial arts requires teachers and training. Same thing applies to bending.
Y’all were kinda trash talking the moon for most of this episode, but of the four “original benders,” the moon makes the most sense to me. It’s a naturally occurring body almost as old as the Earth itself. It’s not an animal or a person, it’s a spirit that has existed in it’s celestial form for a long time. Assuming the ATLA moon has the same push and pull on the tides as our moon does, it makes sense that waterbenders learned waterbending by observing it (in the way that humans learned to open clams by watching other animals do it). A naturally occurring process that we copied, not something that was taught by an animal who (for whatever reason) knew how to do it all along.

The animals and the moon have always been the original benders, The Legend of Korra didn’t change that, it just established that the Lion Turtles, through energy bending, gave humans the power to bend. Thus, with this new ability, humans were able to learn how to properly bend by mimicking the original benders, the animals and the moon.
I agree with all but one point. I believe that any person can bend, its inherit to humans. HOWEVER through energy bending you can lock/unlock their abilities.
Ceru53 well no, bending is genetic while bending does have a lot to do with chi and energy, bending only depends on genetics. If you did have a lot of energy and chi then Guru Patic could be able to bend. Also you can’t energy bend since the lion turtles would have to give that to people, and the avatar has been the only person to do that.

If it didn't work that way then only those given bending by the lion turtles would have bending and would have died out a long time ago. And where did I say you needed a lot of Chi to have bending? I believe that Humans in this world are, by default, set to an "off" position. Together with genetics and Chi a human can be turned "on." Ozai is not very in tune with his body's energy nor does he utilize Chi well, he just has a more inherit ability to connect to the energy in his body therefore he can shoot lightning (as Iroh explained to produce lightning you need to be able to feel the energy in your body). This means that you don't have to have a lot nor do you even need to fully understand it to bend. The Guru cannot bend because his bending is still in the "off" position and he himself cannot turn it "on" because he doesn't know how to energy bend. To better think of my understanding, we all understand how the water cycle works, right? Precipitation, condensation, evaporation. Just because we understand it doesn't mean we ourselves (without any other outside help) can turn water into steam. The Guru is well read and has a deep understanding, but he cannot perform. If the lion turtles can give bending, and Aang can take it away (And so can Tai Lee and Amon in different ways) then that means it has to be inherit to everyone.
i mean its really just basic village surivial.....would you send your only population that is able to have kids to keep your tribe alive to fight and possible die....or just send the guys to do it since they are less important in that process :/
No, the lion turtles had cities on them. When people went to hunt or gather food the lion turtles gave them bending which they had to give back once they return. One dude Wan, was banned from a city but was allowed to keep his fire bending. He trained to use it like they did later in the show. Stuff happened and he traveled through the world getting the other elements and became the first Avatar
The lion turtles have the power to bend people’s spirits (energy bending). After the dragons, badger moles, and sky bison started using fire, earth, and air bending respectively, along with the moon moving the tides, the lion turtles used spirit bending to make it so that humans could use a certain type of bending easily, but if you learned from the original benders (dragons, sky bison, badger moles, and the moon), it would be harder to start bending, but if you keep working, you would master it
Surely if people can learn bending off animals dosnt that mean anyone could master all four elements. This is why they probably introduced lion turtles
The original benders were both the lion turtles and the moon, badgermoles, dragons and sky bisen. Their stories are different tho. Humans in the begining lived on the lion turtles for protection. They were temporarly gifted with bending by the lion turtles but when their help was no longer needed they lost this abbility. Later humans learnt from the moon, badgermoles, dragons and sky bisen and that is how they maintained that power. It is not explained who was the first original bender but both are considered "original" to some extent.
They didn't lose the ability when they left the Lion Turtles, we saw Wan's city given the Power of Fire when they left to make their own way. Presumably the same thing happened with the other Lion Turtle Cities.
Much like the world and Avatars, they have forgotten about the very first Avatar, Wan. Aang wasn't aware or made any connections to past Avatars further than Yangchen. Only Korra succeeded in doing so. He's never seen or heard of a lion turtle and was genuinely surprised upon discovering the creature when he went under water to investigate what him and Momo were floating on. With that said, I believe over time history of lion turtle cities faded and people soon forgotten that the first benders were granted the ability to bend as they've also forgotten past Avatars. (which always seemed weird to me that no one kept information regarding the Avatar) The modern world believes that special animals are original benders and by observing them, they're able to perfect and strengthen their ability to bend. History can be lost over time and I think this is one of those cases. My 2 cents anyway.
Considering how little we know of our own world's past, it isn't that strange. 10k years is a long time. We rely on archaeological finds and written documentation to know anything. And depending on where things took place, you only have the archaeology to guide you.
They made it pretty clear that this listing is correct. The elemental animals passed down what they naturally had and the Lionturtle says almost word for word, before we bended the elements we used energy. TLoK just takes a big doo doo on the plot and Avatar the last airbender's writing.
"One of the best things about Avatar is how much time they spent on world building." And one of the worst things about Legend of Korra is that Beginnings COMPLETELY DESTROYS that world building in just a two part episode. I thought that the lion turtles took back their bending powers from the humans and years later, humans had to rediscover bending by learning from the original benders. It's like the lion turtles explain why people have an affinity for one element over the other... So Oma and Shu were probably the first Earth Benders who actually kept their powers, and the humans that became actual Earth Benders, rather than just borrowing power from the Lion Turtles. I think the Avatar doesn't count...
You forgot one very important thing. Tui and La are not the only "celestial" benders. There is also Agni, the sun, first of all fire benders. Which means there are no doubt both celestial, and spirit animal benders for all four elements. And there are absolutely hints at what they are in the series, if you look closely enough.
@Balance of The hill Air I'm not 100% sure on, but the Earth celestial bender is called Guan Yin, iirc. There's a few subtle mentions of it in the shows and comics but not alot of details. There's also a reference to the "earth shaker" which might be Guan Yin, or might be something else.
Given that Iroh was a warmonger until the warmongering affected him personally (with the death of Lu Ten), I would guess that he wouldn't be much different from Ozai; maybe _slightly_ better but probably not.
I love this channel, but these avatar videos really just seem click bait-y and hopping on the resurgence of popularity of the series. Most of the things discussed in your atla videos have been known/theorized by the fandom for years. And most of your explanations and evidence for the video is poorly explained or outright wrong, an example being the moon in this video. The original water benders were the moon and ocean spirits, Tui and La-not just “the moon.” I like how you guys are venturing into new fandoms and making fresh content, but I don’t think avatar is the right series to be moving to.
Finally all of this makes sense. Been trying forever to understand this. Thanks for clearing up 🙏🏻 Now, please make that Moon video, because it has bothered me too just how often there is a full Moon in the show.

@@strifenineteen Yes. The tides are the result of the Moon waterbending. That's perfectly fine (by the logic of Avatar universe), however it doesn't explain how the Moon taught others to do it. Does the Moon stretch and constrict like a ball thrown forcefully against a wall, to waterbend? Or is it purely by it's mind? Maybe it has a spirit body that can actually perform moves necessary to bend, that only other spirits and special individuals like avatar can see? Ehh, now I'm ruining my own joke, coming up with multiple explanations...
The whole gravity and increased appearances of the full moon could be explained if you think of the planet avatar takes place on not as our earth, but as a separate planet that is smaller.
I wished the avatar series was longer. Like after they beat the firelord, aang had many adventures after like finding zukos mom and having a child. They could of ended it off why aang dieing and katara, toph and zukos morn
Of course we wouldn't have seen Yue waterbend. You're forgetting that, before Katara, women weren't allowed to learn to fight and were only allowed to learn to heal - which, at least according to JonJon the Deserter, in itself is a somewhat rare ability like metal, lightning, and lava bending I think the whole "original benders" thing comes from them being the source that humans learned how to bend from. In LoK we don't really see the lion turtles doing anything besides allowing people to take refuge on their backs. They may have granted humans the capability of bending but they didn't necessarily teach them HOW to bend. Meaning to get better they had to either learn through usage or by observing something else that could also bend their corresponding element. It could also be that the lion turtles only granted the bending ability to some people and others had to make that connection on their own. Meaning, the lion turtle could just be embuing them with a surge of energy that helps allow them to bend easier (sort of like the monk ungunking the ponds) however they could have already been capable of doing so if they were aligned spiritually. This also fits in with the whole avatar and Rava part because it was already stated why it's too much for a single person to bend more than one element without spiritual assistance. This would also make sense of why all air benders are benders while the same isn't true of the others (Keep in mind i typed all of this halfway through watching the video because i didn't want to lose my thought xD)

I would say it could, and probably has already produced natural energybenders, they just wouldnt have realised they could bend anything other than air. Energybending is such a niche thing that I dont think you would ever accidentally find out you had it, you would have to specifically try to energybend to even know if you could, Like katara always being a healer but not knowing until she put her hands in the water and wanted them healed after aang burned her

Yeah even after watching this vid I'm still kinda meh on the theory. Truthfully, I think the writers of LoK did recon the OG lore in order to better fit their plot. What was revealed in LoK didn't feel wholly natural (story/world building-wise). It felt more like they wanted to take the lore and make it their own rather than make it fit consistently with the original lore. Which is fine, I guess. LoK was a different show but I don't think their execution of the telling of the new origin of bening benefited the overall franchise. It could have been done better and actually I wouldn't have done it at all personally. When stories explain the magic, the magic tends to become less interesting (unless you're explaining a magic system's rules which was not what they did). They unveiled the mystery behind the mysterious bending (rather sloppily imo) and the bending (and subsequently LoK-judging by ratings) also became less interesting to sections of the audience (and doesn't even include the controversial nature of what revealed and it's possible inconsistencies with the OG).
@@soufian2733 Not all of the writers from the OG returned to write for LoK. I believe it was only a couple of them. But it doesn't really matter. Some writers recon their previous work all the time. It just depends on who's in charge of the decision making.

In my opinion they only scratched the surface in the first show and left a lot of room for a huge reveal like the Lion Turtles. And it’s true they needed that backstory to drive the Unalaq plot forward but I don’t really see how that’s a problem. Your point about it "unveiling the mystery" is your personal opinion, to me it was one the best 2 episodes of the entire franchise. Could you actually tell me what the inconsistencies are in your eyes ?
I'm guessing bending is similar to a gene and sometimes it can be passed on and sometimes not. I would assume it's more complicated than recessive and dominant tho, because otherwise over the millennia, bending would either be used by nearly every person, or would die out. Also, all the air nomads were benders, but we don't know if someone was born in an air temple and couldn't bend, were they essentially kicked out? Did literally everyone who was an air bender have to move to the temples? It's a very weird concept.
That's a great question, especially since every air nomad is a bender. I wonder if it has something to do with their chi? Maybe their chi is blocked somehow and the air nomads are the only ones who can use theirs because of their connection with the spirit world?
The Lion Turtles gave the people power- Bending. But the people learned from the original Teachers: - Flying Bison; Air Bending - Tu & La; Water Bending - Dragons; Fire Bending - Badger-Moles; Earth Bending
Why didn't the Lion Turtles give more people air bending after the genocide? Or why didn't Aang ask the Lion Turtle who gave him energy bending to give the Air Acolytes air bending? Or why didn't he give them air bending himself?
Because it wasn’t the air lion turtle, because aang doesn’t know where the lion turtle is, because it bending is based on spiritual connection, it the difference between being religious and being spiritual.
I believe three possible reasons 1. Aang was unaware so therefor of this power so never searched for lion turtles again (the first time they meet I feel stopping the fire nation would have been the priority) 2. The lion turtles believe it is no longer their place to help humans and they must forge their own path 3. The lion turtle and Aang weren’t able to find each other again for whatever reason
Right something that I noticed on my last watch through of Avatar and I feel this is a safe fandom to discuss my findings. The intro is a lie! They claim the war has been going on for 100 year from when they release Aang, it is not it's 99 years. My proof is Sozins comet, which appears every 100 years. The first attacks where carried out under the comet and then the war ends with the comet. So yes it is a 100 year war when it ends, but Aang was not in the ice for 100 years.

So, could it be said that the lion turtles gave humans the power of protobending (literally just using the elements), but the animals gave humans the ability to actually BEND the elements to their will? This would be similar to weaponry. Sure, anyone can pick up a sword and stab someone with it. But you'd have to learn to actually be effective with it.
There are some toxic fans that say that LoK ruined the lore of firebending. By saying that firebending came from the Lionturtles and not the Dragons but if these Avatar "Fans" remember that the ability to bend elementals was *Given* by the Lionturtles but the Dragons are the *Masters* or *Teachers* of firebending. During Avatar Wan's time, firebender only used fire-jab or fireballs but thanks to The Dragons firebender can now bend fire like an extension of the body.

About TLoK "retconning the lore"; The spirits refer to the lion turtles as "ancient" and "ancient one", heavily implying that the lion turtles were around long before anything else, and perhaps were the first creatures to ever exist. That being said it would make sense that they are a very spiritual creature existing in the physical world, which could allow them to transfer that spiritual energy to who ever or whatever they choose. They grant the power of bending to travelers and hunters, but they don't do any teaching. It would make more sense then that the lion turtles granted humans the ability to bend, but the original benders taught humans how to properly make use of the elements. We see Wan master fire by learning from a dragon, which would clearly mean the dragons recieved the element of fire before humans. So the original benders must have recieved, and then mastered, bending before humans were ever granted the ability. Really all that TLoK does is show us where bending came from, but it doesn't change how humanity learned and made better use of the elements.
but if you u think about it the lion turts were the original ENERGY benders because they only open chi pools in order to bend the elements whereas the animals were the original benders so technically the animals were the original ELEMENTAL benders and th lion turts were th original benders in terms of energy
The lion turtles give them the ability, but they don’t teach them. And just because you have the ability to do something doesn’t mean you’ll be good at it. Or even know that you can. You’d never know if you can fly a helicopter if you never tried.
Well you also can point it like this. Lion turtles are animals. They could also learn from the original benders (moon and the company), but lion turtles took it a bit further, having the abilities to give humans that same ability they had. That way they would still be the original benders. People would still be able to learn from them, but on their own. However, the lion turtles can give their knowledge to the humans, and the knowledge that they have is the one they learned from the originals.
Couldnt a blood bender, given a high enough skill, actually bend any element by proxy , since they can force people to do body movements and potentially control every muscle of another person?
Korra turning into a giant light Korra in my opinion was only one low point for the series. The world going from a super magical place where the bending is tied very closely to real world martial arts, but then the very last big boss for the show is a 20 story tall mech that could be ripped out of countless generic mech anime is probably my least favorite thing about LoK.
In the library episode of Avatar the last airbender aang at one point holds a picture of a lion turtle talking to a man. I assume the lion turtle is about to give the man the ability to bend. So I don't think anything was retconned I'm pretty sure it was already planned. You explained this really well though that was an awesome video!

Ok let’s clear this up lion turtles are energy benders any one has the ability to bend if their chi is open to it some are born with access to manipulating there chi more easily and this allows them access to what their emotions and culture line up to causing them specific bending types lion turtles merely unblock someone’s chi and or energy allowing them access to there bending lion turtles can bend the elements by unblocking their own energy to access bending but over time lion turtles lost the knowledge henceforth the ability to bend other elements.
