What version of the Shadow over Innsmouth did you read? Because there was no detective in that story. It was a young man tracing his geneology. What you're describing is the plot of the videogame Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

I think you need to do more research. Stuart Gordon did five Lovecraft adaptations: Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak (an adaptation of The Outsider), Dagon and Dreams of the Witch-House. You also didn't seem to get the point of In the Mouth of Madness (easily the best Lovecraft-inspired film so far) and missed the references/homages to the original stories. The movie ends with John Trent laughing because like all the best Lovecraft characters, he's become mad. And the writer's name is Sutter Cane. Not Sutler. As for other Lovecraft films, there's The Dunwich Horror, The Curse (The Colour Out of Space), The Unnamable, The Resurrected (The Case of Charles Dexter Ward), Necronomicon and The Lurking Fear.
6 лет назад
Was this best to worst or worse to best? Don't quite understand the order since you end with #4 being your favorite but #5 least favorite. There were several Lovecraft inspired movies like Mouth of Madness left out with The Void, Carpenter's The Thing, The Witch and Heritage which were both recent intensely horrific Lovecraft inspired Productions as well as Gordon's From Beyond which was a little better than his Dagon and I can go on. Also, Dagon had some of the worse makeup effects depicting the hybrid inhabitants of Innsmouth but succeeded on other levels working on a shoestring budget which was a result of his original production being canceled that had creature designs and storyboards created by the late Bernie Wrightson and slated for a major studio like Del Toro's At The Mountains Of Madness but canceled. Oh what could have been had these movies been green lighted, your list would have been much different... Excellent work on the production of your video posting and good analysis and narration, your getting there my friend. Just a little more research is needed and clarification... 🤔🙄😉😊👍

So many movies that were missed. The Haunted Palace from 1963 starred Vincent Price as Charles Dexter Ward, and it draws upon both that tale and Shadow Over Innsmouth. It was directed by Roger Corman and also starred Lon Chaney Jr. It's depiction of Arkham had a great, creepy atmosphere. It's totally worth a look, and even a comparison to the 1991 film The Resurrected, which starred Chris Sarandon as Charles Dexter Ward. Adored The Whisperer in the Darkness by HPLHS. Like with The Call of Cthulhu they put in the extra effort and delivered a great film.

11:55 "Ya'll know Lovecraft was an atheist, right?" What's that supposed to mean? That he thought a cult of Dagon worshippers was preferable to a typical Christian congregation? I seriously doubt it.
@_Bookmark_
@_Bookmark_ 7 лет назад
Thagomizer I said that more to highlight how blatantly victemizing Christians in an HP Lovecraft story feels a bit forced. Kind of like it was put in there to make a personal statement. Also their heavy focus on scripture, kind of felt out of place in a story where the use of worship was often a tool of ridicule by Lovecraft. In short i just didn't think it fit the story.
@kevinboudreaux7860
@kevinboudreaux7860 4 года назад
Bookmark I’ll disagree with you there. If it was a synagogue, Buddhist temple or mosque that was vandalized to make way for Esoteric Order of Dagon to be formed, it would have worked just as well. The reason is that when you worship a god who doesn’t share a sense of morality with human religion, things can denigrate rather quickly. Around 50 years after starting to worship Dagon, you have skinning people alive, ritual human sacrifice and rape, mutations, incest and more.

The 1965 Boris Karloff flick "Die Monster Die", very loosely based on " The Colour Out of Space" turned me on to Lovecraft when I was a kid. So many things. First, you said you could not find Lovecraft films to review, should do some research. www.imdb.com/name/nm0522454/?ref_=fn_nm_nm_1 Next, did you even read or watch any of these stories? In the Mouth of Madness WAS NOT a Lovecraft film, it was Lovecraftian, learn the difference. The antagonist's name was SUTTER Cane, not Sutler. As far as a Lovecraftian story, it was near perfection. It captured the madness, cosmic horror, and existential dread that is Lovecraft. Dagon was not Stuart Gordon's second Lovecraft adaptation, it was his FOURTH. Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak, Dagon. And all of them were brilliant adaptations. Lovecraft has appeared as a character in several films before the Frozen Kingdom. www.innsmouthfreepress.com/blog/lovecraft-the-character/ I suggest you watch The Resurrected (1991), The Unnamable (1988), From Beyond (1986), Castle Freak (1995), Lurking Fear (1994) You, good sir, are not educated enough in the lore or films of H. P. Lovecraft to have made this video and I fear for others you may have produced in your ignorance. Please, look at the link I posted in this comment for The Internet Movie Database and acquaint yourself with more of his films.

Um, nearly all the information about "Herbert West -- Reanimator" is somewhat off the beam. It was NOT originally published in WT, but in a semiprofessional magazine titled Home Brew, edited by one of Lovecraft's amateur colleagues, George Julian Houtain. It was chiefly a humorous magazine, making HPL's story rather an oddity. As for him not getting paid... the deal was $5 per installment and he got that (he in fact went on to write another serial for Home Brew, "The Lurking Fear")... though it took longer than it should. As for why he disliked writing it... that was nothing to do with money (most of his writing to that point was written without thought of money, and a lot of it was published in amateur magazines (no pay save contributor's copies, if that). It was the entire idea of a serial, which he felt was completely inartistic and foreign to good writing (see his letters on the subject in the first volume of his SELECTED LETTERS). The Herbert West stories were indeed published later in WT, but by that time HPL was already dead.

For the most part I liked your selection and enthusiasm, but disagree on your take of ItMoM. Except for the last movie... These bullshit direct to video CGI cash grabs don't deserve our attention. I would have given it a 'dis-honorable' mention and moved on to 'From Beyond' or 'Cthulhu'(2007). Cthulhu is not very good and actually based on The Shadow of Innsmouth , so while mistitled, it is an HPL adaptation. Your love for the subject matter really shows and made for a great video.

This may sound rather odd but the best story (not necessarily film) inspired by Lovecraft is probably the first Dead Space game. The first part is that the main character is only given enough of a backstory and development to allow for him to be a John Doe that anyone can identify with. it also has this sense of other worldly horror and a general indifference to the humanities existence. It also contains that sense of madness in tge main character, Issac, and even after he's believed he's defeated it's hold over him the last frames of the game is that ancient power still holding power over him. all in all it's a great game and very Lovecraftian.

I'm not trying to be rude but have you actually read Lovecrafts stories or just watched the movies?

I honestly don't know much about Lovecraft or his stories but even I can tell that the idea for the last film was beyond absurd!

The Resurrected is pretty good. And Peele is heading the new Lovecraftian tv series.
