I filed a restricted application for survivor benefits intending to collect a small survivor benefit while my worker benefit continues to grow and switch to the worker benefit at 70. The point of this comment is that on two separate calls to Social Security they told me I could not file a restricted application for survivor benefits and could only collect the higher of the survivor benefit or worker benefit. I persisted because of the following quote in Wade Pfau's Retirement Planning Guidebook (page 164) "For instance, if the worker benefit would ultimately be larger, one could claim the survivor's benefit early and delay their own worker benefit to age 70 to take advantage of delay credits". The Social Security employees were confusing restricted applications for survivor benefits with restricted applications for spousal benefits (which is no longer possible). So, the moral is to keep trying until you get a knowledgeable Social Security employee.

@@paulhi9228 All people who are eligible for Social Security, regardless of birth year, are entitled to file a restricted application for survivor benefits and grow their worker benefit. The point of the post was Social Security provided incorrect information to me.

Hello! I'd like to see an example of what happens with blended 401k at retirement. Say 60% traditional, 40% Roth. :)

It is pretty messy....But in reality the spousal benefit is a great benefit,. So if you are say 60+ and just living with someone (of whatever sex), you should consider marrying them, it helps your taxes and it gets them a SS increase in most cases.

What about a 66yo person who was a homemaker for many years, married over 10yrs, been divorced over 2yrs, not remarried, and also eligible for SS themselves?
@paulhi9228

You can get a spousal benefit equal to 1/2 of the ex's PIA or your own, whichever is higher

What about if you delay benefits to max SS(age 70) and die sometime after age 70+. Does your spouse get the full delayed SS benefit amount or does it reduce to your original FRA amount that you delayed and never took?
@paulhi9228
@paulhi9228 Год назад
The same delayed benefit amount you are/would be entitled to receive.

Dustin, are you sure about a divorced spouse receiving the same benefit? I have looked this up in the past and I was finding the divorced spouse can collect only half of the benefit.
@paulhi9228
@paulhi9228 Год назад
If the marriage lasted 10+ years, the ex spouse receives your full benefit at your death provided she has not remarried prior to age 60. Unless ... there are several complications. I have two ex's who may receive my full benefit when I pass, and they're looking forward to that day... but they have to out live me to get it :)
@robroyig-robroyphotography9225
Thanks Dustin for that video! Very informative. I have a doozy for ya, well, hopefully not..lol. I’m 57, and have been maxing out SS for the past 10 years to the point where it is no longer taken out of my check come later part of the year. My wife is 4 years older than me and collect SS Disability. It isn’t all that much, but it has helped out allot. Does her benefit change at age 65 or 67? Meaning, does the Disability portion stop and she start to collect SS at FRA? If I wait to 67 to collect for me, making her 71, does her amount get factored in by what I am getting, or does she just keep getting the SS Disability until the end? Hopefully that question makes sense, lol. Thanks so much!

What happens if I get divorced and then get remarried who gets my benefits? My divorced spouse or new spouse. From the man's perspective not the female.
@paulhi9228
@paulhi9228 Год назад
If your first marriage lasted 10+ years, and your ex meets certain criteria, both would receive full survivor benefits. Neither is penalized...

What if I am remarried and my ex-spouse dies, will I be able to claim his Social Security even if I am remarried? Can my exspouse claim my SS, if they are remarried and I am remarried? After we have been married for 10yrs?
