It's a difficult choice. Miranda is great. But the actor who affected me the most was Christopher Jackson. He humanized Washington for me in a way no one ever had. He has become my internal image for the person Washington was. Color is irrelevant. No one who plays Washington ever really looks like him. Jackson makes me FEEL Washington as a living, breathing person. He's amazing.
@sean0eeegradel314
@sean0eeegradel314 4 года назад
The emotion he brings makes you feel like he is telling his own story, not someone else's. The raw power of his vocals. The command he has of the scene...I mean, he's playing the role of the man who is considered the father of our country. And you feel it in every aspect of his performance. The agony of being charged with leading the revolution, and then building a nation from nothing. Heavy is the head that wears the crown...and you can feel that weight as you watch him bring Washington to life.

I’ve watched Hamilton at least 10 times & found something new every time. Lin’s performance does me in! His body language & facial expressions take me from hysterical laughter to sobs. When Eliza takes his hand in the forgiveness scene, every part of him shows feelings of awe, unworthiness, & then gratefulness for her grace & forgiveness. I may be totally off, but the first time I watched one of Lin’s crying scenes I thought-that’s exactly what happens when we sing & cry at the same time. You get choked up, you can hardly sing, much less carry a tune.

The ending of "One Last Time" is pretty much the epitome of the show for me, when he is almost in tears and holding that hand out and just soaking up the emotion that he's getting back from the audience that he gave out during the song. That was a powerful moment. I cannot argue with ANY of your choices, and I get why Lin-Manuel didn't get the nod (as you said, he built up the people around him, which makes him the best kind of boss to have as I've had a couple of them), but I think Christopher Jackson should have gotten a vote.

I think the best performance was from Renee as Angelica. She probably has the best vocal performance (belting up to some Gb5s!), and is also has one of the cleanest rap voice. She is one of the only characters with a flawless voice _and_ flawless rapping. Obviously Satisfied is the highlight, but she riffs and belts super high in The Schuyler Sisters, and has some really cool emotional complexity in It's Quiet Uptown. I think she definitely deserved her Tony Award.

So, my favorite performance is Renee Elise Goldsberry- I think she has the hardest role. It reminds me of how they used to say Ginger Rogers did the same thing as Fred Astaire only in high heels and backwards... Her role requires very precise singing, fast rap, as well as nuanced acting. It is very similar to what Daveed Diggs is doing, but she is playing family interpersonal relationships & the scenes with Phillips death/& Alexander's cheating as well. As to who surprised me... I knew from the album I'd love Renee... I liked Chris Jackson's voice on the album & I'd seen him at the Whitehouse gig. It did not prepare me for him to walk out on stage. His stage presence as George Washington was incredible. As soon as he walked out I believed he WAS George Washington. Period. So incredibly impressed.
@prosen8966
@prosen8966 4 года назад
Tarotiste This is in no way relevant to Hamilton, but (IMPO) there never was and will never be even a close comparison bet Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. I’m positive that Fred could have tapped in high heels, backwards, etc. Indeed, throughout their movies (just talking abt Astaire/Rogers, not the entire array of Astaire films) they didn’t just tap dance as one would in a class or even just in a sweeping manner of a lovely dance. They tap danced while roller skating; they used the furniture and random props; they had fun and great chemistry. But there were always moments in their dances (not every single one, of course, but many) where Fred Astaire was basically dancing around her. His dance included moves that were different bc, let’s face it, he was a one in a trillion dancer. TBH, I also don’t think Gene Kelly was at Astaire’s level. He was not only so incredibly blessed w talent, but he started in films at an older age then most bc films didn’t exist before a certain point in time. And he STILL had the energy and talent of a man half his age. I’m not going to name every movie and dance he ever did bc I couldn’t do that off the top of my head, for one, and two, that would be exhaustive, but his dances - many either alone or with backup dancers but he’s clearly the leader - remain relevant today to anybody who even thinks about becoming a dancer. And his movies started close to a century ago. He dances w a broom; he dances w a cane; he dances on the ceiling; he sings and dances through a toy store using the instruments as props; he dances w like a battalion of men behind him; on and on and on. Holiday Inn is one of my favorite movies (Altho it’s not an Astaire/Rogers). Indeed it’s a Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and two fine women whose names totally escape me bc they were nice and all but nothing compared to the two men. (This is not to say there weren’t female dancers who came much closer to Astaire’s level than Rogers; just that they weren’t in the films I’ve mentioned. Cyd Charisse, Rita Hayworth, et al. I was truly more interested in watching Astaire then specifically watching movies with dancers.) But I’m rambling. And this isn’t to say that I wasn’t blown away by Mikhail Baryshnikov or Gregory Hines or very recently, Sergei Polunin (most especially in that Take Me to Church video). But Baryshnikov & Sergei are really ballet dancers (best in the world - just not famous in particular for tap). And my only point is that Astaire is really in a category all his own. But it’s a personal opinion. You need not agree. And I’d rather talk abt my fav actor in Hamilton (it’s beyond ridiculous to try and rate the dif actors like this one is the best, then x,y, and z) But I’m going w Diggs, even tho his part wasn’t specifically designed for “best actor”. The guy above just asked. I’ll explain in my own comment, not in response to somebody else. And for the record, I was also blown away by Renee. (I realized I’m using that phrase bc I’ve heard it so many times listening to Hamilton.) I’m sure she’ll be a top choice! 😘🥰

I watched it for the first time with zero background. I hadn’t listened to the soundtrack beforehand. I highly recommend doing it that way. MY MIND WAS BLOWN. Every moment was a delightful surprise. I honestly can’t choose a performance. Philippa and Leslie were technically brilliant. Daveed and Oak stole every scene they were in. Renee is a FORCE and I am in absolute awe of her. Anthony completely broke my heart twice. Every time Jasmine sang, I wished she had a bigger role. The fact that Lin isn’t the best singer makes him more real for me. From beginning to end, he was so believable. Chris is what gravitas looks like. From the second he hits the stage, you know that he is about to run this shit. Jonathan is absolutely delightful. I can’t say enough good things about this cast.

I went to the West End show where unfortunately the actor for Aaron Burr had to be replaced midshow because the original actor was sick (we all could see it towards the end of act 1 that he wasn't okay). What I learned from that is that as much as this is Hamilton's story, Burr carries at least half of the emotional progression of the show (if not actually a little more). That is to say, I was probably a little too focused on what Leslie Odem Jr. was doing when I get a chance to watch it on Disney+. And that man can carry emotional progression like Atlas silently carrying the World. His performance in "The Room Where It Happens" is also unbeatable in terms of how he develops Burr's character in a single number while dancing to probably the most over the top choreography in the show. I love everyone in the show especially Lin, but Leslie can have my cake and eat it.

Having heard this discussion about Lin's voice, and thinking about it...it is possible that LMM's brilliance is that his voice is smaller than the others...and yet so powerful? "Don't call me son..." When he first comes out and says his name, it is humble, yet confident - not strident or bold. And it gets more confident and bold, but still a bit quieter. Do you think it may be on purpose?

I have to go with Leslie Odom Jr. the guy is simply fantastic and insanely talented, no other actor gave me as many chills, but I adored the performances by everyone else mentioned too. Daveed Diggs is a powerhouse and he has a very flashy role that makes people instanteneously remember him which is a testament to his acting abilities and charisma. I loved Renée Elise Goldsberry as much as I loved Phillipa Soo and while Lin was limited singing-wise, he did a very earnest performance, you could tell how much he enjoyed and was committed to play this character.

I'm from Germany, so I saw Hamilton for the first time when it came out on Disney+. I knew it existed, and I was interested in it since I'm studying history and art, but I didn't want my first exposure to the material be "only" the songs. It's a musical, an audio-visual experience, so I never listened to the soundtrack either, although I was interested and told how good it was. I wanted to see the acting, the costumes, the choreography while listening. I saw it on the 3rd for the first time, since then I exclusively listened to the soundtrack and watched the show once every day. I'm beyond in love with the production, with the cast, with the songs. I have to say that I agree that at some points I would've wanted to see something different than what the camera showed me, but then again I can deal with that. As for my favorite performer, I can't choose, I simply can't. It switches for every moment, every song, not only the actor but wether the vocals, the lyrics, the music or the choreography is my favorite part of that song or in that moment. And I think I have a favorite moment for every actor, both ensemble and the main characters, I have very specific favorite dance moves in the choreography and pieces in the songs (musically and lyrically) that I enjoy a lot. (Challange accomplished: say "I like everything" in as many words as you can)

I agree with pretty much everything they said about Lin. He's a good performer, and a much better rapper than singer, but I also thought that he doesn't always match the brilliance of his co-stars. Still all credit to him for writing this masterpiece and assembling all this ridiculous talent. I was also able to watch Hamilton in Chicago, and Miguel Cervantes as Hamilton was magnetic, sexy and the absolute star of the show. Assuming Broadway eventually re-opens, Cervantes will be playing Hamilton there and I recommend seeing it.

Honestly Anthony Ramos is amazing and he gives a moving performance as Phillip as well as John Laurens. I think he definitely deserved more screen time because when i saw Hamilton in theatre Laurens' death felt more heartbreaking and moving. On Disney+ I do understand the camera changes but the Lin close-ups during Laurens' Interlude hits very different since it goes from Laurens' died and everything he had done and promised didn't work out when he died, that doesn't come across like that in the Disney+ version because it becomes more about Hamilton losing a close friend.

I’m annoyed at them being annoyed that they can’t see the entire stage during the whole show. If they had just one camera angle; like one you’d see if you were in that audience, they’d be complaining that they wasted the opportunity to show these performances up close. Like no matter what, they’d have a complaint. Thomas Kail can’t win. If you want to see everything for the entire show, then see the show. Don’t expect a movie to just give you a static framing of the musical. Of course it’s going to have closeups and different angles.

I feel like the movie is the movie and the theater is the theater, y'know? On the movie we can see up close their expressions or stuff that we couldn't see from an angle Some scenes are more impactful in certain angles, like when Alexander was about to get shot, Eliza was standing in front of the gun and moved away, that was so powerful with the angle that her body covered the gun And some close ups are really necessary On the theater you can choose were you look, you can choose which performances you want to focus and you have that enormous energy coming from the audience One isn't made to replace another, both are different experiences, each have their pros and cons, you don't have to choose between the two you can watch both! And for the people who aren't able to see the live version and the people who couldn't get to see the original cast the movie is so necessary

LESLIE ODOM JR!!!! It's not even a debate to me. Nobody had a more insane character arc to portray. And every song that Leslie performs that shows us what Aaron Burr wants, or who he is, or a change in his character (Wait For It, Room Where It Happens, the election of 1800) bro absolutely kills. He doesn't just entertain but he moves the story along with his emotion. Understand, Burr had to be played by someone who could get the audience to understand, love and feel for the man that kills an American Founding Father, who also happens to be the hero and lovable main character of the show. Debate done. Yall can have your crushes on Daveed and Anthony (as you should, they are beautiful and talented asf). Renee is a force to be reckoned with. I worship the ground she walks on lol. Chris Jackson and Oak are highly underrated. But please do not tell me any of them had to perform half the amount of complex, layered emotion, combined with multiple high emotion/high energy songs that alter the course of the show than Leslie did. I think Leslie Odom did have the best vocal performance, but Lin-Manuel Miranda gave the best acting performance. The moment in “Its Quiet Uptown” that Eliza reaches for his hand and the Ensemble sings “forgiveness!” is the pinnacle of the show for me - I still cry every time I see it; I just feel Hamilton’s pain and relief wash over him completely. the Disney dude I ultimately came down on Diggs (for reasons i drone on about in a comment I could publish as a book) but I specifically discussed how amazing I thought Lin-Manuel was in his role and the fact that he wasn’t the best singer in this overly talented group of actors did not take away from his acting into which I was immersed for the entire musical. Meaning that while the play was long, I never stopped watching during each act but played it straight thru, and was thus thrown into similar emotions as the characters: excitement, trepidation, Joy, fear, laughter, questioning from within, unrequited love, all consuming love, madness, utter and complete loss, acceptance (there are too many for me to name, tho I tried!) Eliza’s pure joy and happiness at finding a man she adores and actually having him reciprocate that love can be measured against the horror of the moment a bullet is shot early, taking the life of Hamilton’s first child and perhaps wiping away that feeling of constantly moving moving moving forward bc that brings both himself and Eliza to a screeching halt. The birth of Hamilton’s and Burr’s first children brought tears to my eyes, but I sob uncontrollably every time I watch Its Quiet Uptown and that feeling remains, even after Hamilton’s disbelief at receiving forgiveness from his wife. That moment , that song is so exquisitely moving and Lin immerses himself into that part so well... Indeed, I also become caught up in his soliloquy between the moment Burr shoots and the moment he decides he will indeed throw away his shot. I think Lin plays his part so well that ppl underrate the performance bc they don’t recognize how remarkable his acting is thru every gesture and look throughout the musical. I believe Samantha said that Leslie Odom BECOMES Burr but I am even more convinced that Lin is, in fact ALEXANDER thru and thru. His energy thruout the show is enervating (to me, at least) but he maintains that speed until the fatal moment of his sons duel, and I was indeed more than impressed with his performance! I think you have great discernment.

They each have about the same challenges to their characters, and rise to them each time. Also I think that Miranda is a genius in that he can allow the rest of the cast shine in their performances, maybe even at times over his own(???) A truly great leader will happily sacrifice their own desire to be number 1 at every little thing, if it means that the team can perform to their very best they can. Miranda understands that so well, and it shows.

I know the most creative performance was by Jonathan Groff. He had a small part but so creative, so unique! That song was kinda reflecting the King was amazing.

The fact that Jonathan Groff had such a small role but still stuck with you shows what a great job he did. And to stand out among such a fabulously talented ensemble with such a small role speaks well of his talent as well as how well role was written. He gets my vote.

“Wait For It” is my favorite song. My friend’s favorite was everything the King sings. “Burn” was amazing.

I don't care for Samantha's comment about the show being underwhelming because it doesn't match the soundtrack - of course they are going to change things when they are performing in front of a live audience. This isn't a concert where they are performing songs from the soundtrack, it's a Broadway show.

Daveed Diggs then Chris Jackson. I feel like Daveed’s pace in the fast raps is what gives the show enough punctuation to feel historical but not old. He is the levity that makes the show work. Additionally, Chis is a foil to the show’s general tempo and franticness up to that point. Also, his wrought vibrato in “One Last Time” rocks me even more than Eliza after Phillip’s duel. I liked one of the interviews comparing “Hamilton” to “Rent” because “One Last Time” had me deep in an “I’ll Cover You (reprise)” state with the gut wrenching. Rocking vocals all around though.

Seriously, it's like picking only one thing in a candy store. I've come from a background of not liking rap or hiphop, but I LOVED it in Hamilton!

Chris Jackson is absolutely the answer. He gets so emotional and everytime he gets on screen I just get entranced

Phillipa Soo!!! Often times we forget how much Eliza helps carry the show ESPECIALLY in the second act! Love her! 💯♥️

It's interesting and kinda cool that the three people you guys chose are the three that won Tonys. Leslie for Best Actor and Renee and Daveed for Best Featured Actress and Actor, respectively. And looking at the comments, those three are the ones people keep mentioning again and again. It's almost like everyone is in agreement that Leslie, Daveed, and Renee are operating at a whole other level, and I like that.

hottiehanzo27 I saw someone mention this and I agree that they’re a whole other level but really, they’re 11s to the others’ 10s with maybe a 9 for Lin himself.

Leslie Odom Jr. I mean oh my god! I had never heard the soundtrack, had not seen the show, and his performance utterly blew me away. I honestly did not focus on him the first viewing but by the second and then third, I was in awe. He carried each scene and his voice is just perfection. Wait for It gives me chills every time and then the way he introduces the characters at different points makes your adrenaline rush! The camera close ups on his face during Wait for It are so good because you can see his mental wheels turning, as Burr, and you are locked in with him. Anyone who can bring humanity and make you sympathize with the "villain" type character is amazing in my book. My heart broke for him thinking of how he lived so cautiously then when he tried to "win" he always lost. They were alllllll so phenomenal but LOJ just did it for me.

I disagree with samantha about it being a let down that lin har changed the way he performed the show live compared to the cast recording. I felt you really got a better feel of the character though the changes you see in the live performance compared to the cast recording. Yeah, in the recording his singing is better, but the emotion and feel that is Hamilton, shines though a lot better in my own personal opinion in the live performance.

Hands down Leslie Odom Jr. A quadruple threat - great singer, rapper, dancer and, above all, a truly fantastic actor, Oscar calibre even. 'The Room Where It Happens' is the turning point for the entire musical

I had listened to the soundtrack before I was able to see the performance in Boston, I loved both, however, I think the Disney+ version allowed Lin Manuel Miranda's emotions and facial expressions to shine through and humanize the character. I do love the King, but after seeing the Hamilton episode of Drunk History and reading more about Burr, he becomes the more sympathetic character, in my opinion.

I loved everything and everyone. For the Lin being a strong singer part, I personally feel that his voice was spot on perfect for the role. It has a certain vulnerability to it that was brilliant. It wasn’t necessary that he belted the songs with finesse, his character didn’t warrant that. I’m just sooooo impressed with the entire production.
