With the increasing interest from homeowners for home battery backup, it's of no surprise solar panel manufactures like Canadian Solar are beginning to enter the energy storage space. SolarEdge has a long history of providing customers with a hybrid solar and battery inverter, but is their technology good enough for the demand of the future? We put the Canadian Solar EP Cube against the SolarEdge Energy Bank to help you decide for yourself.

I installed a 12 kW solar array (with a SolarEdge inverter) four years ago and am very pleased with the results. My net cost after the federal tax credit and local rebate was $23,000. I calculate the ROI to be about 14% with the system fully paid off between five and six years. In comparison, a battery system is going to be almost twice as expensive with no clear return on investment - it’s more a convenience and peace of mind expenditure. I found this video to be very informative but I can’t see spending the money for battery system anytime soon.

I installed a solaredge system myself in the UK, their installation manuals are a joke. Incorrect wiring diagrams and product names that don't match what I purchased. I got it all working though and I must say their customer support is quite good. I saved a load of money in the process doing it myself and it was a great learning experience.

Could you please compare the EP Cube to Sol-Ark 15kW inverter? Thank you!

I really don’t want to go down the rabbit whole of sol-ark … but we’ll look into it thanks for the suggestion!

@@dalerolph A video on how the Sol-Ark 15kW inverter is a rabbit hole would be very helpful. Thank you very much for considering doing an EP Cube comparison &/or a video on the Sol-Ark 15kW rabbit hole!

I am in Northern California (Chico) and looking at Tesla PowerWalls, so even if they had UL9540A certification their stacking kit isn’t something allowed any longer in NEC, code especially in CA? I am really looking for an install to maintain garage parking for 2 cars and so many installers seem to want to install everything smack in the middle of a side wall making getting 2 cars in and opening door impossible.

I like the compact footprint and initial specification of the EP Cube. Very similar to a Huawei luna 2000. Curious about per module monitoring, will PV + Battery + Generator combine and to what extent, ability of the software to accommodate various tariffs, schedule charge from and discharge to the grid, is the software local or cloud based and the quality of installer/customer support. Hope you can sell a AC coupled EP Cube system and compare side by side with Enphase and Franklin. Also any scoop on the rumor that the upcoming Enphase 5P battery will be not just Enphase specific but also useable stand alone or for any AC coupled addition/retrofit to any system with a frequency shifting inverter? Thanks for the review!

Appreciate your recognition. The PV+Battery+Generator will combine in specific modes. EP Cube does have a TOU mode, which means time-of-use. Owner can set peak time and off-peak time on app based on local utility Time Of Use billing mechanism, to save on electric bills. The software is cloud based. EP Cube has the User Manual for the customer to help them know about the products, and the Installation Manual for the installer to finish the work. The documents provide a detailed description of the relevant affairs.

Nice review - How do you think the EP Cube stacks up against the latest Powerwall?

Where the heck do you get $55K for EP Cube? Is that for a max out system of 3? I'm on a site and it shows $16249 for the 19.8kWh configuration for one stack. You must be quoting 3 full stacks.

Don't leave the EG4 PowerPro WallMount AllWeather Lithium Battery | 48V 280Ah | 14.3kWh LiFePO4 at $3799......Canadian Solar EP Cube seems to only sell to dealers which sucks

When Sunpower entered the Solar market, more than 10 years ago, they offered a high performance (for the time) 225 watt(?) panel. The systems had a matching string inverter. Those systems are now coming close to the end of the warrantee on the inverter. Could the EP Cube use an existing array of these panels coupled directly (DC coupled) into the unit, replacing the existing Sunpower inverter? Supposedly the Sunpower panels are "positively grounded", different from others? I realize the existing Sunpower inverter could be AC coupled into the EP Cube.

There is only one SunPower model that I'm aware of that used positive grounding. You can install a negative grounded inverter system like the EP Cube to replace your modules, it's just going to void the warranty on the solar panels and reduce there efficiency by (we're estimating) 1%. There is no positively grounded inverter on the market, so if you do happen to have that one model, your choices are very limited when your string inverter fails.

@@dalerolph Lucky me - My Sunpower SPR-5000m inverter spec sheet says "positive grounded". My solar panels are SPR-225E-BLK-D. I guess I should wait for a failure (if/when) and replace the system at that time. I could still install a EP Cube or a Franklin device now and couple to the inverter via AC?

@@sethemerson885 Yep! You can absolute do an AC Coupled configuration short term. The benefit of that is when (if) your SMA inverter fails you already have an inverter to connect your solar to so you'll be back up and running.
