Here's how I feel about Opal. I think he genuinely believes what he's saying but I don't think it's very considerate of different situations. I don't hate him as others are saying. And hard work is hard work. But the outcome of hard work is often very different depending on where your starting line is. If a homeless person works very hard they will end up much better off than they would have otherwise and that is true but it is almost a guarantee that someone who is rich that works EQUALLY as hard will climb much much higher because of their access to different opportunities. So yes the statement "hard work is hard work" is true, it's just a little lazy in my opinion.

what? dude went to *rehab* and got a 1500, how is that privilege? on the contrary maintaining a high gpa across 4 years IS privilege since it means your home and school life is stable and supportive for such a long period of time. i'd understand this argument more if it were the 70s, but it's 2022 and there is so much free SAT prep material online that it's fair to say "hard work is hard work". if you have access to a computer or ipad, you can study for the SAT-- even 10 minutes of free khan academy test prep a day will add up.

The fact that opal is premed is scary to me. He completely lacks empathy. He tries to generalize his experience to everybody. Literally the twins went to the same school and the one with the higher GPA got a much lower SAT score so his point on that was invalid. He also completely invalidated peoples experiences just because he was able to be resilient and persevere through his hardships. Not everyone is like him and that doesn't make them any less of a person.

I was thinking that to an extent, but everyone has their biases & it's hard to get a true read on them in such a short video. Most students who start as premed will not become a doctor. For those that do, there are a wide range of personalities. Ignoring the cut-throatedness of med school, even people who lack empathy can still excel in certain specialties. For example, a orthopedic surgeon probably doesn't need to be as personable as a PCP to do their job efficiently

I never took the SAT/ACT. Graduated high school with a poor gpa, around 2.0 I believe. I was fooling around and found myself in a year long depression. Went to community college and cleaned up my act. Had a 4.0 my first year of community, transferred to a 4-year university that’s well recognized in my state. Worked full time and went to school full time, graduated with a 3.46. Went to grad school for MBA, graduated with a 3.67. Now I’m pursuing a rewarding career. Yeah, maybe if I did better in high school I would’ve done better in college and landed somewhere just a bit more competitive. I could make a bunch of excuses as to why I didn’t but that’s behind me. In sum, you can do well in life without standardized tests or a near perfect score on them. But I get why they’re important.

As someone who is ND, with ADHD and in the tism spectrum, Opal reminds me of certain things in myself. The extreme straightforwardness, some inability to think abstracty (hard work is hard work). I asked the same thing when he asked Emily why she hesitated switching, if I got a 1600 score, I wouldn't have hesitated to switch as to me that is fact, why would I act as if I didn't, or hesitate? People say he is arrogant, he might be, but it reminds me way more of how my tism works, when something is a fact it is a fact and that makes it unmovable, and when you don't catch social queues (and forget to mask and act bashful about things that simply are) it comes across as arrogance.

It is perpetuating cute names (the tism), calling normal every-day things people albeit not very common as Autistic or ADHD, validating self-diagnosis and going as far to calm self-diagnose is more accurate than MDs/PhDs who devoted their profession into researching these disorders. People who actually have these diagnosis don't like to see what they struggle with being adopted as a group of fun and unique personality traits. There are people suffering with these disorders and seeing them minimized makes us feel like garbage, and worry about being excluded and marginalized once again. Yes the tism meant to be light hearted, thut thrown around to describe yourself is very cringe. To parade these disorders around like it is who you are is harmful for us who have no choice because it will always be a part of us. What happened to society when it is not ok to treat physical disabilities this way, but it is somehow ok to do so with psychological disabilities. This is a fair and logical point considering that (regardless of the school) your GPA is the consequence of your effort and access. @@saberfan yeah, I don't even think anything more than 10 aps is beneficial in terms of ur prospects of getting in to a university. I don't understand why people take so many? And i highly doubght they do the AP's out of "passion."

i graduated with a 3.89 GPA and got a 1060 on my SAT and a 21 on my ACT 😐 these extremely long tests in my opinion are completely useless and immensely stressful. A college placement test i took to be a dual enrollment student was only 2 hours long and I received a perfect score. the amount of time spent on the SAT and ACT is exhausting. draining. and not to mention you’re expected to study for these tests while still keeping up with your regular class work. i didn’t study for either one. i’m in community college now with a 3.98 GPA and i’m excelling in my academics as a first generation immigrant and next year the first in my family to graduate from college with a bachelors degree. these tests do not measure intelligence or effort. they simply measure patience and focus. something many of us with attention deficits struggle with.

Most of the asian standardised tests are three hours and i totally agree. I died preparing and then taking them..

I have to disagree I think that the SAT and ACT are both important tests that should be mandatory, my reasoning behind why is that it is something universal meaning there shouldn't be any bias there, unlike with schools GPAs differ greatly depending on what school you go to and even what classes you take within the same school so, in my opinion, standardized tests are a great indicator of how well you are going to do, generally speaking (you are an exception to this obviously). I do agree that they should be made shorter or maybe even just split to where you take each section on a different day, but the problem is that with a person's GPA there are just way too many unknown variables at play, especially for international students where schools have different rules.

For me in my school it is impossible to get a 4.5 gpa so it also depends on the schools weighted gpa system

I don’t know how people who go through hardships come out of it with next to no empathy. Like “I got through it so it’s not that bad suck it up”. Great for you buddy some of us aren’t so lucky and trying to tough it out will put us on the fast track to unaliving ourselves. Hard work is hard work but you gotta understand that it’s significantly harder to put in hard work when you’re going through stuff. My dad died my freshman year, I attempted unaliving myself 3 times my junior year, went to 2 mental hospitals, had undiagnosed mental illnesses, and suffered from chronic migraines and insomnia. I graduated with a 4.2 and a SAT score of 1380 with 6 college credits and it would take a flipping Tom for me to tell anyone that they just need to suck it up and put in the effort.
@micherlangefrancois-hemsle1770
My school didn’t have AP or IB classes and I enrolled there when I was a junior, so by the time all my transfer paperwork was finished, I only was able to take 2 college classes (which also raise your GPA), but they weren’t on my transcripts when I applied. I applied with a 4.0 and a 990 SAT (I was always behind in math so I basically failed that section) and got into Berkeley. I’m personally not a believer in standardized testing.

@Merican Modi No, I was just always behind in math so I really just guessed on everything in that section. I also didn't have the time and financial resources to study for the SAT, but looking back on it, I wish I used free resources like Khan academy more to improve my English score. I was accepted into 2 top ten public universities though and just graduated from one in June, so I'm doing fine haha :)
