In this video we cover some past and current worst grunter on the ATP Tour. Music track: Time by Avanti Source: freetouse.com/music Royalty Free Music for Videos (Safe)
Gotta love Murray's grunt when he chases a drop shot though. Or a shot that he knows is really gonna stretch him. It's always funny to hear that sound of desperation.
He grunts in phases: phase 1 realizing it’s going to be a stretch a short grunt to announce the challenge, phase 2 grunts when hitting the ball, phase 3 relaxing grunt (similar to exhaling) to self-congratulate on returning the ball successfully. Listen carefully to Murray…. every shot is a 3-phase grunt.
Murray's grunt is nowhere near annoying. In terms of volume or the duration. I also find it funny that Murray's grunt when he chases a drop shot is so similar to Andre Agassi's - it might have to do with the fact that Agassi was Murray's role-model when he was growing up.
As a fellow tennis grunt analyst myself, I confirm this, it's so funny hearing Murray run for a drop shot. Also among the funniest grunts is Thiem after serve, a full blown orgasmic release
It's the delayed grunters that are the worst, like Sonego. They are making a loud noise when their opponent is hitting the ball, which shouldn't be allowed in my opinion. I do find it hilarious though when players grunt on a drop shot, a shot requiring very little physical effort. People used to complain about Monica Seles back in the day, but she was tame in comparison to todays players. It was so controversial at the time that she decided not to grunt in the 1992 Wimbledon final, resulting in a one sided loss againt Graf.
Monica Seles admitted in an interview that when she was young, she got beaten by a female opponent who did the grunting. It put Seles off so much that she decided to incorporate it into her game specifically to annoy her opponents....FACT
@@jmilne5751 Interesting, I've never heard that before. I always thought she was taught to grunt at the Nick Bollettieri academy. Do you have a link to that interview? I'm not saying you're wrong, I've just never seen or read that, so I'd like to see for myself. Besides, whether she did it for that reason or not doesn't negate my comment. Her grunting is not as bad as todays players, and she didn't play her best in the 92 Wimbledon final as she was so focussed on staying silent that she couldn't play to her typical high standard. Edit: I've just done a quick search of her interviews on the subject and she says she grunted from the very beginning, from the age of 6 or 7. Admittedly it was just a quick search, but if you have a conflicting interview I'd be happy to watch/read it.
@@jmilne5751 Well, in that case I'd suggest you don't make a claim as "FACT" if you have nothing to back it up with. Maybe she did say that I don't know, but right now all I have is her own words on the matter, which does not correlate with your claim.
@@robertl426 Not everything is on the Internet...But to hear the crap that she grunted as a 6 year old and no-one complained all through those years, I find that VERY hard to believe...and being 6 years old it would of been a squeal...
I can't stand that there are 2 distinct grunts on every stroke. There have been so many times on TV that I have thought his first grunt is a lines judge call
The greatest up and coming grunter to me is Dino Prizmic. Sometimes he doesn't grunt at all, but depending on how important the point is, his grunting gets to the point he's screaming. Great example is junior RG match vs Maxim Mrva last year from 4-4 in first set and onwards. Haven't watched many of his pro matches, so I hope he left this screaming in juniors. He still does grunt though, and very obnoxiously.
I'm surprised you missed one of the loudest ones: Thiem. Neighbors literally called the police one time while he was practicing, because they thought someone was having loud sex in public. 🤣
When I was young, there was a challenger tournament in my club going on. There was a match happening on the centre court, but there were tribunes around the court,so I couldn't see who's playing. All I heard were the loudest grunts I've ever heard in my life, worse than any woman. Turned out it was Dutra Silva. As a tennis player myself, grunting is 100% normal and it psychologically helps the player, sometimes when I get really tired,I naturally start doing it myself too,but there are limits. If you play tennis for a long time, you can recognize when somebody purposefully extends their grunts and makes them very loud. Perfect example is Sonego, probably the most unlikeable guy on tour.I would definately also mention Shelton, also incredibly annoying. But the worst grunting I think I've ever heard was that Italian left handed woman,I don't know her name, but I think somebody else will know who I'm talking about.
@@dirkiedoos8577 just heard of Trevisan's name for the first time. I must say her grunting sounds more like moaning and it turns me on tbh, with the way she looks. But it's pretty fking annoying I agree. It's even worse than Sabalenka's for sure.
alcaraz has the worst grunt, its annoying and feels like its tactical. hes trying to spook you or to loose your focus. its literally a hindrance, should get a warning everytime he do that sht
@@dummythiccems you're right, Newton. Xenophobia. Edit: Hispanophobia? Is that a word, Voltaire? Wait no, Nordism! Or Anglophile? Anyway you get the point.
I once had tp grunt during a practice session with my coach. She told me to grunt (like Wickmayer) to at least get used to exhaling while hitting. I've rarely done it during a match. I once did it during a practice match, when it was very hot outside and I was really exhausted (it was more of an Aga Radwanska loud exhale). But i gotta say that it does help a bit. It helps me to focus and actually release some of the tension during those points. So grunting does help for me, but there is a difference between an exhale or a short grunt and a loud long grunt such as the ones in the video.
When you watch tennis long enough you will get used to it, ignore and focus on the game itself. Victoria azarenka is an exception though. I can never get used to her falsetto grunt 😂
not if you're the one playing. im ok with grunts as long as its consistent. sometimes ppl literally grunt so fking loud when im not expecting it and it throws me off.
When talking about retired grunters I at least expected Thomas Muster to be on the list :D I remember when Boris Becker went to the umpire and asked him to stop Muster from grunting as this disturbs his concentration. I think this was at Monaco or an other clay tournament. Also Thiem has a quite remarkable grunt and the ATP itself has a video up here on YT where they let players guess who's grunt they can hear and Thiem was on that list and recognized by quite a few players.
Why people feel the need to scream while hitting or in some cases a full 1-2 seconds after the ball has left their racquet is beyond me. Delayed grunting should be banned and there should be warnings for excessively loud grunting up to the chair umpire’s discretion.
The only time I’ve ever unintentionally grunted was with serving & it lasts a split second. Grunts lasting seconds are intentional & there should be a limit to them!😪
Grunting should be banned from tennis. You get a warning every time you're clearly trying to put off the opponent. It's pretty easy to tell where to draw the line.
@@ebstmnt Just from my side, if I stop grunting, I’m either not focused, or I’ve stopped trying. I can’t really consciously stop myself or my play gets bad because I’m focused on not grunting instead of actually playing the point. I’m sure you sharply exhale before and at the point of contact (which is good technique btw), but some of us aren’t (or weren’t while growing up) very concerned with whether or not our vocal cords vibrate in the process. It does get excessive at times or with some players, but I’m not doing it on purpose. I don’t even think about it during play.
@@cemeterybowling6 I'm sorry but that is just excusing something that is entirely unnecessary. No one ever used to do it, it is a recent fad, and it is a learned behaviour. Plenty of players don't do it. Watching Martinez yelling as he executes a soft drop shot is just ridiculous. He should be given warnings and then forfeit the match for that kind of thing. It is starting to get out of hand as new players copy the pros.
Grunting is actually a technique plenty of players learn in their early days so that their trainer can check on their breathing and respiratory technique and help improve their power distribution and movement towards the ball. As they grow up from early ages with this "technique" it becomes so second nature to them to a degree where they do it without really thinking about it. It is like the V form in ski jumping. Once familiarized with this technique you probably can't undo it. And TBH, if you're in the middle of a ball exchange you're usually focused on the ball itself and thus do not pay extensive attention towards other things like grunting or the crowd "oh"ing-up. By that argument there couldn't be any USOpen which is considered to be the loudest tournament of them all with planes flying over, parties going on left and right and so forth. Even the yells from other courts can be heard there. But granted, some players also use it as a tool to distract the opponent or even mock them to some degree. To some degree it is a mind-game. If you manage to get into the head of your opponent you have an advantage. This is usually how Nadal is able to make turnarounds. He goes to a short pee-break and then manages usually to get into his opponents head and dominate him. But If a grunter and a non grunter faces each other and the non-grunter then suddenly starts to grunt, at first it sounds strange and more like a mock of the other, but I'd then call it even rules for both of them. Especially in the clip shown here at least to me it didn't sound like a real mock here and as such I would have let him continue. I therefore can understand his frustration and remarks. I even know plenty of non-tennis player who start to make strange noises when they suddenly have to lift something heavy or complicated to carry and what not. So I consider that more of a natural reaction of the body towards heavy work. Of course, not all humans react the same. It's like some men snore while others don't. While there can be physical reason for that, like obesity, that is just one of the factors that usually go hand in hand with it, but definitely not the only one. Maybe all grunters also snore at night. I don't know. I'm neither snoring nor grunting :D
@@sil3289 Yeah well everyone used to hit forehands with a continental grip but now players are using these new grips as an excuse to hit with more topspin (if you don’t understand the point I’m trying to make here then we are at an impasse). I don’t disagree that shouting is not good, but grunting in general isn’t something as easy to change. Even Federer grunted every now and then
Tennis is so funny, the crowd has to be quiet while the players play the point but the players can make as much ridiculous noise as they want. Tennis is the only sport where you have players making noise like this. Ban grunting if you want tennis to grow because nobody likes it.
This was a much needed video. I love Carlos, but his grunts are too much. Sonego as well. and then there are many Spanish speaking players in general who grunt... Yes Zapata..fuck That Sousa finals match....... Sousa was still verbal after the other player made contact with the ball.. Jesus christ.
When I heard the grunt from Auger-Aliassime first time I was wheezing and laughing my arse off for whole 5 minutes. If i would be as a spectator in the stadium live I would literally die of laughter lol.
There's a match between Zapata Miralles and Alcaraz from a few years back (HL are on YT) and it has some of the most ridiculous grunting I've ever seen. ZM is screaming almost like a crazy person during some points. Shouldn't really be allowed.
Zapata Miralles is just annoying. The dude has a negative attitude all the time and has inconsistent grunts. Sonego is bad but his grunts are mainly just delayed. Zapata Miralles is just disgusting
The noise Kyrgios makes whenever he gets dropshotted and has to run for it is hilarious, aside from Nadal maybe most distinctive grunt in tennis for me. Murray does the same true but I think Kygs is funnier.
On the men’s side I gotta go with Zapata Miralles LOL and on the women’s side the 2 time Australian Open Champion Aryna Sabalenka. It’s borderline hinderance. I enjoy watching them as players but could definitely do without their screeching nails on chalk board grunts.
Perhaps the non spaniards should grunt a little more to win tournaments. Australians to win AO, british to win Wimbledon, americans to win USOpen or french players to win RG.
after watching cristian garin in person, it might have to be him. he was grunting long after the ball went over the net and it was loud as fuck. not sure how he never gets called for hindrance.
in general i think bitching about grunts is kind of silly. Players like nadal, alliassime, alcaraz, sonego all have a very normal, natural grunt (i would say nadals grunt is even iconic and alliassimes grunt is kinda badass). Very few players actually take it too far, but it happens. These guys like llama and silva in the video defenitely sound like theire pushing it. Also Murray is annoying it sounds like he's being fd in the a or dying but it fits his character
