The whole thing has far more to do with highly personalized experiments in psychology, with the vehicle primarily taking the form of direct mystical experience ( The overarching purpose being a sort of psycho-spiritual self-development- a la, Jung), than some sort of nonsense involving sacrifices, dark spells and worshipping evil incarnate.. This is probably surprising to a lot of people but Crowley was in fact on the more extreme end of the spectrum when it came to denouncing the practice of black magic (will provide sources if you want them) and regarded left-hand practices in general as contradictory to his own system. I think it's more than materialism, I think even art is something to chase for them. I think we have some modern notions that if you think about it, don't seem right. For example, the worship of non-sacred art. It's seen as the highest virtue to be a kind of starving artist chasing the great masterpiece. But why? Why has no one questioned what the reality of that is? They cut off their disconnection from humanity and in a dark room talking to spirits trying to create sounds or put colors on paper?
