Although Lombardo never fought those big guys you mention, he did manage to beat the almost invincible Abe at the 2019 Paris Grand Slam with 2 kata-gurumas.

Lombardo is younger, has shown better results in recent years and has been competitive against the top dogs like Abe. Honestly, Basile has always looked out of his depth against the really good guys. His win against Tsend-Ochir was well done, but also a silly mistake by overconfident Tsend-Ochir. Apart from that he won against An Baul in 2016, when he had the day of his life and An was probably still happy about finally beating Ebinuma. I don't think Basile is going to win anything with the top dogs present anymore. To me the more interesting question is between Esposito and Basile. Esposito also won't win anything big with the top dogs present in my opinion. But at the european championship he got 2nd place and Basile went out against Hojak. There Esposito has beaten Shavdatuashvili as well (twice in a row now!). For that reason, I think right now Basile is number three in Italy behind the two of them.

Have to agree with Jason here.... the question in Italy should be " Who is the number 2 seed?" since Lombardo is clearly the number one under 73kg

Basile is a clear luckster, not that skilled for the credit he gets.

You shouldn't say Lombardo has better results than Basile. He has better recent results, yes, but winning a grand prix is nothing compared to winning gold at the olympics. Similarly a lot Japanese only show up at WC or OG and don't have many medals in between compared to Western counterparts, but they smash when it really counts.

@@jiva6410 but my point was the overall/total career results are still much better for Basile simply because of olympic gold. He had what it takes so he might be able to do it again.

Keep an eye also on Giovanni Esposito, he is 2-0 against Shavdatuashvili, he is very good, but probably slightly less good than Lombardo and Basile

With all the love to basilie Lombardo is younger and better look what he did at such a young age in the 66 kg category give him 1.5 years to settle in the division and he is going to be a real problem at the Olympics

Defiantly a tough call, I think Basile with the experience and more arsenal of techniques is the better choice over both Lombardo & Esposito.. Although all 3 are dynamic it would be great to see Lombardo against the higher end players as you mentioned! Tough choice coming into the final block of this Olympic cycle for sure mate! Interesting to see who can put it all together at crunch time!

1 month ago lombardo gots 5th place in Mediterranean games and he loss his first round against a 21 years tunisian guy who compete only three time at senior and in africa only and then got to repêchage but losses in bronze contest against gjakova akil from kosovo

Basile’s draws are always very tough, he always gets the best very early on, too soon to decide in my opinion.

I think Lombardo is the better one. He gets almost everyone with his crazy Kata-guruma. Not many people win against Abe. He won with 2 Kata-gurumas. In my opinion Basile would have also no chance against his Kata-guruma. PS: Could you please make a video about Smetovs performance at the GP in Zagreb?

Basile for me, he beat the mongolian, and he has had tough matches against top 73 players like an, ono and hashimoto. Next year probably we will see top competitors more often as points became more important for the games qualification
