I went to one of the EU debates (Maastricht), when the EP candidates explained their points to the public and gave us a bit more transparency. BUT THEN the EU does a 180 and chooses someone most of us have never heard of! What a slap to the Spitzenkandidaat concept, the transparency/legitimacy of the EU for the everyday citizen. The Lisbon treaty should have implemented more of a Democratic value (Very easy to say you're Democratic on paper, but the EU population isn't feeling it!)

From an American perspective, the European experiment is a grand endeavor and has definitely empowered the region. However Europe’s top leaders should be directly elected or they need to have less power. It seems instead of being a legislative body, the European Parliament is just a formality for the council and commission. In my opinion, the E.U. shouldn’t be making so many decisions that impact national sovereignty as long as the top positions are appointed. Again, the E.U. is very important in ensuring peace, stability, prosperity, and is a good ally for the US, but I believe it is much less democratic than it seems, and decision making power needs to rest more directly in the hands of the people.
You have no idea what you're talking about. The lists for the european parliament are national lists, that's why the top positions are appointed and not "directly elected" and the "spitzenkandidat" system was rejected by many countries. And nothing is done yet because the parliament will have the last word and might reject the nominations.

They do it for a reason. They know that women tend to be overly scrutinized by the way they look, dress, do their hair etc.. so they put on this look of a professional grandma haircut with a boxy monochrome pantsuit to be neutral so that there is not much to say about the way they look and more to say about their ideas, their policies etc.

Well, history repeats itself. She did not manage to supply the German army with functioning equipment including protective equipment whilst she was Minister of Defence in Germany. Now, unfortunately, the EU commission have screwed up with respect to procuring enough approved corona vaccines under the aegis of Ursual v d Leyen. We will have to wait until the end of 2021 and may have to use second rate vaccines, whereas countries such as Switzerland have assured that their total population will be vaccinated with modern mRNA vaccines by the end of March 2021. Worst of all: instead of apologizing for messing up, UvdL is trying to sell this as a massive success in really cheesy advertising clips. Must be great to be beyond scrutiny and criticism.
