Who is Galadriel? Lore of the First Age - The Impossible Lore Video - Tolkien & LotR Lore (Part 1)

We look deep into the lore and history of one of Tolkien's most iconic characters from The Lord of the Rings: Galadriel, the Lady of Light. Sister of Finrod Felagund and daughter of Finarfin and Eärwen. She is older than Sun and Moon and one of the greatest Elves in Tolkien's universe. We will also see her in Amazon's The Rings of Power show as one of the protagonists, though I ofc focus on what is in Tolkien's books (LotR Lore) in this video (which is part 1).
At the same time her lore consists of many different versions Tolkien wrote. We will also explore why there are so many versions of her. In this first part we look into her life before she came to Middle-earth and still lived in Aman. I try to give you an overview of her story and explain it. Basically Galadriel's story explained. This is Part 1 covering the peaceful day of the First Age and Galadriel's early life. I also try to explain what's so special about her hair.

My take on Galadriel is that she was always setting herself up for a chance to gain more power, patiently playing the *extremely* long game, stringing along and learning from Melian while every other power burned itself out, carefully balancing action and restraint and looking for opportunities for literal ages, finally leaving her as the most powerful elf in Middle-Earth and the only prominent one left besides Glorfindel to have ever seen Valinor. However, once she got her biggest chance, she was wise enough to realize she didn’t actually want rulership and that she could never really have it on the terms she wanted if she did.
@moniquelegarda1842
@moniquelegarda1842 Год назад
Do you think a younger, less experienced Galadriel would have taken the ring?
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
Yes possible. She came to Middle-earth because she wanted to rule her own realm and not be under the tutelage of the Valar anymore. At the end she decided to be happy with what she achieved so far and that it was enough. It was time to go home for her. Hard to tell if she would have accepted the One Ring. We can read she and Celebrimbot did not find the strength to destroy the three Elven Rings of Power: “and [Celebrimbor] went to Lórinand to take counsel once more with Galadriel. They should have destroyed all the Rings of Power at this time, 'but they failed to find the strength'.” So she would not have been able to do so with the One Ring as well (if she had the opporunity). She was able though to not use Nenya while Sauron had the Ring, but having the One is ofc a different level of temptation and she also still used Nenya, when Sauron lost the One Ring.
@JeffRebornNow
@JeffRebornNow Год назад
Very good comment. GaIadrieI's character arc seems to go from from vanity and rebeIiousness to wisdom and resignation. Once she rejects taking the one ring for herseIf, she is reconciIed with the VaIar. This was a great sacrifice for her (it meant the end of her ruIe and the end of LothIorien), but it was aIso a recognition on her part that her own power wouId aIways be Iimited by some other power not her own. StiII, this was not her preferred choice; she accepted it but did not embrace it. She says that she wished the one ring had never been made or it had remained Iost forever, so that she couId continue on as a ruIer of her own magic kingdom.

Complex in so many ways, multi layered and various in versions that Tolkien put to paper and the shaping of her lore. It would be unfair to say she was an afterthought but once she made her presence known within the works he found that he could never really nail her down in a coherent way as he did with other characters. You’ve got a monster on your hands here Chris but I look forward to this immensely but fear we will reach the end and still be asking more questions when it comes to Galadriel and so it shall be.

I think, in the context of the early lore, but also in terms of the English language in the early 20th century, Tolkien referring to Galadriel (and Feanor) as 'wise' most likely refers to 'lore' wisdom - knowledge of the Mysteries of the world and the teachings of the Valar.

Hey Jeff, I am a Tolkien fan very much like you, I think. I got The Hobbit as a gift from my mom in ( I think) 1977, or 5th grade. I know I was in 5th grade for sure. I never went to first grade. I was traveling through the country in a VW bus that my step-dad had turned into a mini-Winnebego like camper/RV. A bed that had hinges that opened it to a pretty good bed, and cabinets along the left side. A bunch of gear and clothes were stored under the bed. He did a good job customizing it because he was a carpenter. I just went right to 2nd grade after we came home. So, Tolkien was working on the Silmarillion right up to the month`s before his death. He made constant changes thru his life. Christopher said he thought his father never really wanted to fully complete the book or stories. He thought of it all the time and added bits as well as erased bits of the work. I believe he felt that, if the book came to an end, his own life would end. That is just my thoughts, and I don`t think we will ever know the truth of it. What do you think? Cheers!

I think you have the incorrect date for 'Nerwen' quote at about 22:15, the UT quote excerpted from the Shibboleth is 1968 rather than 67: "it was written (composed in typescript throughout) on paper supplied by Alien and Unwin, in this case mostly copies of a publication note of February 1968" PoMe, SoF
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
I think I phrased it "around 1967", because we can read: "for this paper consisted of publication notes, and many of the pages bear dates: some from 1967, the great majority from 1968, and some from 1970." "Of this material I made a good deal of use in the section The History of Galadriel and Celeborn (and elsewhere) in Unfinished Tales" You might be right, because it says: "But this was not the last of his speculations on the matter, and there are several typewritten texts that return to the problem (all of them belonging to the same period, 1968 or later, as The Shibboleth of Feanor, but certainly following that work)." But yes it's sometimes a bit tricky to date these texts, so I went with a "broader" time span ("around that time").
@Tar-Elenion
@Tar-Elenion Год назад
@@ThePhilosophersGames Yes, the passage you quote is referring to the various 'Late Writings' overall, rather than specifically SoF. Se also in Problem of Ros: "all of them belonging to the same period, 1968 or later, as The Shibboleth of Fëanor".

And that character is about to be perverted beyond Tolkien's wildest nightmares. Don't watch it, don't cover it and deny its very existence.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
The character can't get perverted, because the character lore of her is not finished. It's impossible to say what Galadriel did in the Second Age. I Agree though some stuff the show shows us is extremely unlikely (like her visiting Númenor), but if there is a character that offers a lot of freedom for writers of a show, it's Galadriel. Aragorn was also heavily changed in PJ films. In the books he wants to become King either that or death. For the films they made him doubt and gave him a character development, which in the books was completed already when he met Frodo. Still it worked out. It might be that Galadriel turns out to be completely off and they fail miserably to portray her. But to truly judge that, one has to see it first. If they fail it would not be the first time of a bad adaption and won't be the last. Luckily the books won't go away. In addition every work in media requires reception and critique, which is part of what I will also do on this channel as well. Are you against free press and pro censorship? 😅 Further this video is a video about book Galadriel, so it has very little to do with RoP anyway 😅 I would like to talk about book Galadriel here, not about why some people dislike the show.
@damientaylor7480
@damientaylor7480 Год назад
@@ThePhilosophersGames the character is already perverted. You know how Tolkien would feel about this, don't pretend to be ignorant, you know too much lore for that. Ignore its existence like any true fan would. Give these Melkor worshippers nothing, and make no mistake, that's exactly what these fake fans are, perverters of Eru's music. Amazon picked the wrong fandom and if you shill this utter garbage I will then know that you too are a fake fan. Remember Tolkien's reaction to the OG animated adaptation of his works? He will be rolling in his grave to see black humans pretending to be elves (not possible) and Dwarfs (coz you need so much melanin underground 🤦‍♂️) and I'm Aboriginal saying that, they don't exist. Trying to use Harfoots as precursors to Hobbits when they ARE Hobbits, just a different race of Hobbits and none were darker than say a European from the Mediterranean. I'm a real Tolkien fan, I won't give this fan fiction the light of day, it can burn however many billions Bezos wants.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Год назад
Oh no not this whole fake fan stuff again. I spent literally several thousands of hours studying Tolkien's writing in the last 5 years. I can still appreciate strange adaptions of his works without going around and calling people names. What is this for definition? Watches Rings of Power and/or reviews it = fake fan? Stop trolling. That is one of the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in context of this fandom. A "fake fan" would be somebody who pretends to like Tolkien, but in truth he does not. I started covering Tolkien before this how was even announced. It's not like some long term plan. And even if somebody does not like Tolkien or anything, eh can still appreciate the work. In addition I did not take part in any events of Amazon what so ever, I don't get paid by them for making content here. This and other comments feels like calling some people to watch football together and then one dude just constantly talks about - I don't know - Tennis all the time. This video is about the books not even about RoP. I understand you dislike RoP and I respect that, but only because you don't want to watch it, that is not true for every person on earth and not everybody who does this is a fake fan. There are also people who dislike the Peter Jackson LotR films (or the Hobbit films, which are also full of fanfiction) and there are people who like them. Those are now fake fans as well depending on weather you liked the films or not? In a way it's like what Gandalf said: "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them?" Tolkien did for sure not want you to call other people names. That is just immensely impolite. Also can people stop pretending they knew Tolkien or what he would say and do? Christopher Tolkien even disliked the LotR films and i think said he believes his father would as well. For sure he would not like RoP too, but that does not mean they are bad adaptions. In addition most people have not even seen a single episode. Are we in kindergarten here? Usually you to judge something and build a solid foundation to express an opinion, one needs at least to see what he is talking about first (and people talk about it since the cast was announced). Also why not writing a letter/mail/comment to Amazon? I can't change anything anyway. They use non traditional casting. the characters are not black/what ever inside the world. Míriel is still 1st cousin of Pharazôn. Yes I cans ee people disliking this., but believe me i have already heard about it 1 million times by now and I don't care about the casting stuff. They could be all painted blue with yellow dots and I would still watch it.

haha fair enough 😄 (though I have to admit I liked ep5 more than most others, but it has sadly some triggering lore ideas 😅)

Oh No! Don't say Galadriel was ret-conned by Tolkien. The legendarium gatekeepers would not be pleased. If Tolkien was alive today they might take away his membership in such an exclusive club. My cape was taken away when I dared say that the Rings of Power series might be good. Give it a chance. Alas, maybe the gatekeepers are right and I'm not worthy.

Tolkien was simply not done writing her into the lore. What is in the LotR book(s) is consistent in of itself (some names changed though over time). Yes some people just decided already to dislike it. There are plenty of people still who are open to the show and are curious how it will turn out. But that is also not the topic here.

How can we even approach without a bad expectation when the first shots of Galadriel are of her in armour and in wars, which never happened. This therefor, isn’t a truthful interpretation of the character and is thus, bad off the hop.

@Eonhunter I think it's not a problem they make changes based on very vague statements ("indeed she [Galadriel] with Celeborn fought heroically in defence of Alqualondë against the assault of the Noldor [...]" from the Unfinished Tales), but people should know that this is a a very free interpretation and taking an interpretation of the First Age Galadriel into the Second Age. I mean Aragorn was also not doubting to become King, in the book he wanted to become king with every fibre of his will and body. So quite the opposite, but it worked for the films quite well I think, because they don't have to explain this in all detail and we see character development. In the case of Galadriel it might work as well or they fail completely. We will see.

Yes the performance of some videos makes me sad and feels kind of unfair (which is on YT). It might get more views at some point out of nowhere, but it feels very random, which is frustrating.

@@ThePhilosophersGames oh, I know. Just putting random facts for people being introduced to Amazon's Galadriel😄 and not Tolkien's. We will forever have to distinguish one from the other until Amazon's lotr is thousands of years in the past and is only a whispered memory.
