I decided to leave my “holy trinity” of her songs from each album, starting with the album Samo za tvoje oči (For Your Eyes Only), instead of a playlist of her most palatable songs. I'm not Serbian, but I live in post-USSR country. So for me Plane's performance goes as a one based on stereotypes, but for some reason I still kinda enjoyed it. Idk why, but I think the way that Plane was telling those jokes kinda sold it for me. Agree with all the comments about Ru liking stereotypes, and for Plane it was definitely a safe rout to do.

THIS. I actually believe that Jane did more research that she showed (or they showed), but it was said by Chad A LOT in the episode - your only goal is to make mother laugh. Period. Jane did that, did make me laugh even tho I'm polish so I also get the "you're all russians" stuff a lot & really don't enjoy it. I really like Jane and I can see how smart she is, doing a stereotype like that is very funny to Ru & she did it. She's playing the game, whatever way you look at it. I understand Serbians not loving it and I would also prefer if she did some actually russian character then, but anyway I think she did the best in the episode (going by RuPauls standards at least, and she is the host).

Apart from saying babushka instead of babika, I don’t think making jokes with communist references is that off, Jelena spent her childhood in a communist country. In Budapest Hungary, arguably the most liberal communist country back then, there was one western cinema in the whole city that would offer one movie a day at one specific time. The movies would take a few years to get to Hungary. I think it is really cool she got to share Jelena to the world and set her to the Madonna and Gaga standards explaining who she was to Ru

This is a really nice video, it's very informative! Plane and simple (pun intended), Plane Jane played a character for Snatch Game. The challenge is the opposite of representing the real character. Plane made a parody which was understandable and digestible for an international audience. She even mispronounced "babushka" only to use this word to give her act an Eastern-European flavor. Yes, Serbian for grandmother is, as far as I know, "baka" or "baba", but how many people would actually understand that? And honestly, the "thank you for being a comrade" written in cursive and with a Cyrillic "p" was hilarious. I also found it funny how Plane wrote most of the name in Cyrillic, but the last three letters in Latin. It just added to the lack of seriousness of it all. Had Plane tried to represent the character and the country, the political connections, the albums and the songs, most of the audience would not have understood it, and there would be no jokes. But here some of us are, learning more about Jelena, partially thanks to Plane Jane.

I am Brazilian and know about Jelena listening to balcanian music with Andrea and Galena. And founded DIVA in 2012 and been obsessed on her style. And Alpha & Omega was, for me, as it can be for her and her genre, two very good albums. Congrats on the video! 😎✌🏼

As a JK fan, I'd say Plane Jane looked like her but the mannerisms and the accent were not there, it looked more like a Russian bimbo. It was still very good and I'd give her credit for the war joke (which is very Balkan!). Imo the "comrade" joke was still valid because of the Yugoslav socialist past and even Marina Abramovic has often joked about that!

I've been commenting everyhere how glad i am that someone not only did character from my country, but WON. Plane's impression was like a 6-7 but comedy and characterisation were a 10, deserved winner. Also, fun fact, even tho people see Jelena as only body.. which.. she is making it that way, she acually is very intelligent, and her IQ, apparently, is around 150. The first half is the perfect explanation of her. She is a good singer, when she wants to be. Here in Serbia playback/lip-sync is still VERY alive and so it is very nice to see her shof off her vocals, bc she has them. She has a very unique nasaly deep tone with great riffs and runs but very very... interesting vibrato. It is too push-y and sounds like too much. If she just would tone it down, she would be a great singer. Her ballads show that she has so much emotion and passion when singing, like in "Ne Vredi (Pucaj U Ljubav". Her ballads are so underrated, and she will always SERVE vocals and production. Her fashion is also amazing, probably my favorite aspect of her character. I wish the video included a very big part of her career, and that is her time as a judge on our biggest singing competition (not just in Serbia, but in our region), "Zvezde Granda" ("Stars Of Grand"). She was THE MAIN character by far. She is brutally honest, critical, and... that can come off as and at times IS.. rude. Her most iconic critiques are "You're never going to be a star" and "You dressed up like a grandma". She is also arguing a lot with other judges at times, but her most iconic fights and arguments are with a singer Viki Miljković. Jelena always comes at the end as the winner bc of her confidence and crowd control. People either love her even more or hate her even more. But, she is funny. She has a great sense of humor, but idk if it translates with our people the best at times, bc she comes off as arrogant a lot. One thing is, that she can see a star. People here REALLLYYY confuse the competition as if it's called "Singers of Grand" and so hate on Jelena when someone can sing, but doesn't have a star quality. And that's where i heavily agree with her. Her time on the show is truly iconic and Serbian TV Gold. Whenever she is on the screen, is T.V. GOLD.

Thank you for taking the time to explain so many things about Jelena! First, for context, I’m a white American... Back in 2012, “Krimi Rad” went semi-viral here, and despite not understanding a word of Serbian, my friends in college and I thought it was such a visually stunning video and catchy song that we would play that music video a lot when drinking at home before going out on a Saturday. Then, as time went on, I got more into her music. I became a fan of her songs but never knew much about her other than she was a supporter of LGBT rights in Serbia and was a controversial figure. So I really appreciate this deep dive! Unfortunately, Americans don’t have a thorough understanding or comprehensive view of European nationalities… so it was sad to see Plane Jane rely on USSR-era humor, and it was even more sad to see that relying on those stereotypes secured her the win. That being said though, the one positive is that now gays in the US are finding out who she is and getting a better understanding of Eastern Europe in the process. The US is a large country with only one non-English speaking neighbor, and sadly most Americans never leave the country… so their understanding of the rest of the world is pathetic. I would probably say that the average American in their 20s knows very little about the Balkans. But seeing representation like this in pop culture helps fix that lack of understanding! Because even though it wasn’t the most accurate portrayal, it has sparked curiosity in many Americans who otherwise would have never even thought about pop culture in the Balkans. I guarantee there will be multiple American queens doing Jelena numbers at their local bar now 😆 Thanks again for the awesome video 🤍

At one hand - I really, really like Jane. I can see how smart she is and this choice was smart of her for at least two reasons, unfortunatly those being Ru's ignorance. As Michelle was convinced, that she was doing a made up character and nobody had any idea, that Serbia is not Russia, that we don't all speak or even understand russian. She was smart, because she basically could do whatever she wanted with that, put a couple of known russian words in like spasiba or babushka and be golden, which she was. HOWEVER - I do truly believe that she would be equally as good AND less problematic if she chose an actual russian character. Hell, do something politic, do a russian pop star, someone everyone knows by name but doesn't know anything else about. You'll have the same freedom without the problematic nature, but i guess - it's Jane we're talking about here. Problematic where hahahah As always, great video. If by any chance you're reading this, have a beaufifull day, sending much love from Poland! So good to hear you back c;

Her only connection with Russia is in her two songs where she sarcastically mentions Russian women and the Russian mafia. he also spits on Novak Djokovic... Everything I mentioned is also on you tube. It hurts Serbs when someone from Serbia is better than average, let alone like her with so many albums of success... wait , you're Serbian? cuz you keep saying " here " as if your talking about where you live. I honestly thought you were Brazilian all this time LOL, sorry . Anyway at first I was saying that you should just lighten up and not care much about the performance, and just enjoy that she was doing Jelena Karleuša in snatch game. But thinking about it and seeing how if this was like someone doing a lets say famous star like Shakira who's Colombian and making her sound like a Mexican wouldn't be right. Like every American already thinks every latin person is Mexican and its the same with Planes character that everyone thinks slavic people are Russian here int he US., I think this is a bigger conversation about how Americans are pretty much the only country in the world who are least educated and cultured. like living here its always just about the them. I remember meeting people at bars and the conversations were very bland like they would talk about " OH i moved from my small town and here in California is so different it was so hard moving here" I am like wtf? I lived in three different countries and know 5 languages and traveled to over 40 countries and you are complaining about how california is so different then your small town in Nebraska? You’ve asked to see outsiders opinions, so heres mine: i’m an 18 year old American and my online presence pretty much revolves around 90s/00s culture. I often find myself obsessing over 90s & 00s pop girls whether they’re from the uk, Russia, whatever. My good online friend suggested i get into jelena and i was absolutely stunned by her fashion… every now and then a photo of her makes its rounds on Pinterest & tumblr but i never see her name. While i can talk about her fashion and aesthetic endlessly i cannot say her music has affected me the same way. Im still getting into her music but ive yet to find anything that wows me. I think thats mostly due to my rather generic music taste tho

Some of the jokes were funny, I'll give her that. Also, I did enjoy the visual presentation (bigger bust would've been better). Personally, I would've given the win to Sapphira, but I can't call PJ's performance bad. However, the constant mispronunciation of Jelena's first and last name by everyone, including PJ, annoyed me. The mixing of two (or multiple) slavic cultures annoyed me. The constant joke that Americans make about mostly eastern European countries along the lines of us "seeing Golden Girls for the first time" is annoying beyond words, and I would personally go as far as to call it degrading. Just google some stuff, ya know, ignorance is not funny. Kisses from Croatia

As an American, I have never heard of Jelena. And then when the show showed a picture, I kind of got scared. Part of why I enjoyed Planes' snatch game was because I had no prior knowledge of Jelena. thank you for the insight! I have sincerely missed your drag race content, it was nice having a slightly more serious, nuanced take on the show, and I greatly appreciate you coming back for this. I do think, given that the challenge is about making Ru and the audience laugh more than about accurately portraying a character there is some wriggle room for things being not exactly right, like, why ruin a good joke with the truth? sort of thing, but some of that was clearly a lot lazier than I had the cultural knowledge to pick up. (I'm from New Zealand. We don't learn shit about anyone here, or at least we didn't 18 years ago when I last took a social studies class, and pretty much all the pakeha (te reo Māori for white folk) here are of English, Irish or Scottish descent. So clearly all we need to learn about is WW2 and Captain Cook. Gotta love that pro western propaganda and colonisation.)

Oh my god, and I too am offended at the drag kings I saw the other night making fun of my gender, and of 'The Windsors' making fun of my culture! As a posh British person, the things that TV show inferred about posh people were so inaccurate and really offensive! So disappointing. Like girl, it was funny. Accurate doesn't = funny. There's no joke in absolute truth. Mae West never asked anyone to 'f*ck me up the ass sometime', and Joan Crawford never screamed 'No Wire Hangers! Ever!' - it's parody. I think you can inform us about the real woman without slating the performance Also, Jelena does have breast implants I saw her confirm it in an interview.
