You left out one of if not the most important thing of all about Neil Young. It's integrity. Unlike almost every other big-name musician you can think of, Neal has never sold out to anyone for any amount of money. He's never compromised his music to cater to the current taste, and he's poured his Blood Sweat and Tears into supporting the ideals that he believes in. Ideals that have never changed. That is on top of being maybe the greatest all-around musician of his era.
"Who is Neil Young?" *A Man, An Artist, A Poet, A Lover, A Myth, A Legend and The Wiser Voices In Your Head* Mister Young saves a lot of broken souls through times, 24 and there's so much more.
Got to see him live in 1970, Pauley Pavilion, UCLA, as part of CSNY, Stephen Stills playing, “For What It’s Worth” solo on the piano (and I thought the dude totally ripped on guitar),. All of them playing together on “Ohio”. That concert captured the moment and is seared into my brain.
LOL, WHO DOESN'T KNOW NEIL YOUNG, REALLY???? WHOEVER SAID YOU NEEDED A THERAPIST OR TO SPEND SHITLOADS OF MONEY ON THERAPY, NEIL YOUNG HAS BEEN MY THERAPIST THROUGH THIS LIFE , ALWAYS HAS BEEN , ALWAYS WILL BE, HE'S DONE MORE GOOD FOR ME THAN ANY COLLEGE EDUCATED , BOOK LEARNING FOOL ANYWHERE, HE'S A PURE, GENIUS SPIRIT OF A MAN 🕊 I LOVE YOU NEIL 💞✝🇺🇸☮
Finally, the video I've been waiting for. Neil Young to me is one of the greatest characters in music. You have to realise how many bridges this man has purposefully burned to be able to evolve and make the music he cared about, he has taken every opportunity to make it harder for himself just to stay true to his idea of himself. Great guy, greater songwriter. Amazing guitarist.
When I think of Neil Young, I think of gnarly guitars, and sweet acoustic pieces, along with piano. Versatile, is an understatement, when describing Young.
You failed to mention that neil young did the music for the 90s movie "Dead man" featuring johnny depp. At first that doesnt sound so important but please realize he did the entire soundtrack and you can easily hear him attempting this desolate and dark style of spaghetti western music its beautiful and was (in my opinion) the most underrated music he ever wrote
@@turtleman5111 Yes I love them all. But when Rust never sleep came out I just loved it. Even the tracks I didn't like at first just really grew on me. And now it is my favorite Young album,....most of the time... Unless I am am in a mood to listen to After the Gold Rush then...that's my favorite unless I decide to listen to Harvest or maybe some Buffalo Springfield,... or Everybody Knows This IS...,Or even Harvest Moon.......Dang it they are just all so good. Except maybe Reactor 9 1/2 minute of Ain't Got No T-bone is 9 minutes too many. But yeah. All gems all of them and after a while I even really liked Welfare Mother's and Sedan Delivery
Neil's one of the true greats of all time, and also one of the very few artists to be inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame not once, but twice. Rock on Neil! Peace to all!
73 years old and still rocks more and better than most musicians out there songs that actually mean something and that not just get stuck in your head do to the simplicity of lyrics and rythm
yeah tbh I've never associated him with grunge at all. And "Rockin in the Free World" sounds more like hard rock than Soundgarden/Nirvana/Pearl Jam and co. if anyone is the Godfather of Grunge, it should be The Stooges
@@spaceinbetween6591 Yeah, i love led zepp, early Fleetwood Mac (peter green era) and that kind of stuff, but when i say hard rock i mean Scorpions, whitesnake and that kind of shit... The early 70s rock was good because they had blues influences... Jimmy page used to be my hero, then i find out that he used to rip off a lot of stuff from other musicians.
I was working in a bar in Greece. The co owner of the bar was around his late 50s and in LOVE with Neil Young. He would stop preparing drinks and coffee just to stop the music, take a vinyl and blast Neil Youg through the speakers. He had all his albums. It was great !
I discovered Neil young when I was in high school and just fell in love with so many of his songs this dudes a pure artist and I need his artistry in this world as long as whatever power in this world allows it
Its like his 6th best album so lucky you. On the Beach is his best, tonights the night, everybody knows this is nowhere, zuma, sleeps with angels and psychadelic pill are better imo
@@ivar7175 Dylan did a song called "Jokerman." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1XSvsFgvWr0.html On the other hand, it could be a reference to "American Pie," as mentioned in this discussion thread.
Who’s Neil Young? He was Rick James’s bandmate in the Mynah Birds! He’s the everything kinda dude, Renaissance man yet a consistent one, and for that we are grateful
I love how you pulled so many facets of Neil Young's career and life into an artistic little video about him. I loved all your graphics all your work on this. And I've always loved Neil Young's work.
thank you for this video. he’s one of my favorite artists and i really hope so folks in your audience will explore his music after watching this video.
Great video, although another important part of his career that didn't really get mentioned was the ditch trilogy (Time Fades Away, Tonight's The Night, and On The Beach), an excellent series of very depressive introspective albums. Still I get that you couldn't fit his whole career into a video, doing so would take a very long time.
Agreed. And don't forget El Dorado and Crime in the City ,songs that describes two diferents places ,the border and the city,in a cinematographic way. Also another great one, Change your mind.
2:12 - Also, after Dylan played electric for the first time, his tour following this he would often play an acoustic set for the first half and then bring the Band out (capital B band). Some hated it at the time
Young is an artist I havnt really checked out for some reason. I have "harvest" and absolutely love that album but his plethora of other albums kinda daunted me so I didnt look into his other stuff. Songs like "Old Man", "the needle and the damage done", "a man needs a maid" and "words (between the lines of age)" are probably my favourite so that will give someone who is kind enough an idea of what al um to point me to of his that I should really check out. Thanks in advance!!!
Correct, "Ten" makes no sense...it is "Tin Soldier".It was National Guard soldiers that were at Kent State. The National Guard was a way of staying out of Viet Nam. That is why "Tin" was used as a prerogative. Not real soldiers....
I don't know any other way to message this to you, but to say you create one of my top two favorite youtube channels, between you and kaptainkritian. Thank you please keep making videos.
My favorite song is "The Needle and the Damage Done." Nice guitar work and the lyrics describe any addiction, the actions of the addict, and the reactions of those that love them.
Somewhere I recall the comment about Neil: The music is always changing, only the bluejeans stay the same. In addition to acoustic and electric guitar, he's also remarkable on piano, organ, and harmonica. Speaking of lyrics (we weren't) check out "Don't Let is Bring You Down" from After the Goldrush. It doesn't get much tighter than those.
I'm 31 now, but my dad took me to see Neil Young and I was only about 13 and he did Greendale which even my dad wasn't aware it was going to be a tour for that and I came to really enjoy that album. He's by far one of my favorites and has 30+ albums it's amazing how his continues to evolve and revolve his music. Another drop of his upbringings were in "Don't be Denied" where "we packed up all our bags, we traveled up to Winnipeg" Edit: I forgot the entire encore was with Crazyhorse and they did all the hammers!
You rock! Analyzing in short, concise and right on way, and also relevant yet obscure material with trustworthy facts is a rare talent, thank you for sharing all of these vid’s
Not to mention the lots of piano songs he has done. After the goldrush, a man needs a maid, love in mind, journey through the past.. Truly a versatile artist.
I've been really into Neil Young and his body of work, the last while here and I've been hoping you'd do a video like this! And I cannot wait for the next one! edit: spelling is hard.
He has a cabin in Kenora Ontario.Near my families summer spot. Many musicians rent or own cabins on ,Lake of the Woods. It’s massive and has the most Islands of any lake in the world.
Don't forget El Dorado and Crime in the City ,songs that describes two diferents places ,the border and the city,in a cinematographic way. Also another great one, Change your mind. Very unclassifiable.
I love your videos man. The subject matter, the research that goes into it, and the graphics are all top notch. Would you consider doing one on my man, Stevie Ray Vaughan?
When people think of great musicians they often think of people who have perfected the art and science of their music. Young isn't a scientist or artist: he's a Master Alchemist.
Pardon My Heart is the ultimate Neil song for me. Beautiful acoustic and soft, with a simple but stunning electric solo in the middle. Only he can write that!
The insight and breakdown of your videos of artists and songs is quite remarkable. Awesome channel! Very well done! I just wish you should cover more music. That's my only, one and only complaint
I would LOVE to see a video on Ben Folds, the man is a musical genius yet struggles with his own personality and it’s extremely evident in his music. He can go from from alt rock to piano ballad and back again in a matter of minute. I feel like all of this is most evident in his song Erase Me (Live) when he worked with ymusic, man is amazing and i would love more people to love him.
@Danny Dircio yet millions know her name and her songs and few know you. If anyone is trash its yourself mate. 5 of her solo singles reached the billboard 100 (a big achievement at that time), she was the lead vocalist for big brother. Oh and shes still one of the too selling musicians in America (yeah I ripped all this from wiki before you say anything). So yeah, even though she died at 27 she has made a bigger impact than sucking Hendrix dick and being trash and dead at 27
Neil Young embodies music, he isn't tied down by the borders of genres, he just exists in music and floats freely in it. Also guitarists often bash him for being technically unproficient, specifically on electric guitar (because his acoustic playing is really good) but fuck, when Neil hits a note on an electric guitar, you instantly know who's here playing it and that, in my opinion, is what it's about, there are a lot of people that can solo noodle circles around him, but he has that unmistakeable tone and attack and that is the mark of a truly great guitarist.
Neil Young's early music - acoustic guitar and beautiful thought felt lyrics is by far my favorite. But his work with CSN and Crazy Horse is also fantastic. He is multifaceted and I enjoy every period of his career. Harvest Moon is one of my top 10 favorites.
I would really love to see another video on Gord Downie, he's a personal hero of mine and always an inspiration. I feel like the story behind Introduce Yerself would make an amazing video
Neil Young is a true troubadour. He's the singer-songwriter who is above all always his own man. My introduction to him came in his 1960s music, and I admire the old guy who is just as much Neil Young as he was searching for the heart of gold.
Enjoyed the video, thanks! One point to make though...Neil Young is a lot of things, but 'hippie' isn't one of them. He despised hippies almost as much as Frank Zappa did. It's one of the reasons he forced the Woodstock filmmakers to shoot around him, he didn't want to be associated with hippie culture. Zappa turned down his invitation to perform there for the same reason. Easy to forget nowadays that not everyone bought into the stereotypical group-think model that most see that movement as today.
