Madge was 96, not 86 when she died. Her 2nd husband was Mac Hatayama. She married him after moving to the Big Island of Hawaii and being single for many years. She had a small ranch in the rural town of Volcano. My dad dated her for a couple of years. He was the culinary arts instructor at UH Hilo for 35 years. We moved to Hilo the year Hawaii became a state, in 1959 when I was four years old. For two summers, when I was in the 9th and 10th grade, I stayed with Madge and her father (mean old German guy) helping out at the ranch, slopping the hogs, mucking the barn, milking the goats, gathering the duck and Chicken eggs, feeding the horses and donkeys, fixing broken fences and other stuff. It turned out, I was the very same age as her daughter, Christina. I didn't meet Christina until the 2nd summer because she was still living in CA with Madge's sister, Arlene who owned a chain of Laundromats somewhere in the LA area. After that, I went to high-school with Christina in Hilo. (Go Vikings!) Christina started out going to the catholic school in Hilo, but was kicked out for some reason and then had to attend regular public school. My older sister knows why Chris got kicked out, but since it's been so long ago, I've forgotten the story and now could only speculate. The rural town of Volcano is about an hour to an hour and a half from downtown Hilo. In between Volcano and Hilo are the towns of Mountain View then Kurtistown then the town of Keaau. Mac Hatayama was a police officer in the town of Mountain View. Madge had a 1960s Mustang convertible. Everytime she'd leave the ranch she'd put her hair up in hot steaming curlers, get in her car and speed off to Hilo while taking the curlers out of her hair and then brushing out the curls. I recall stearing for her many times while she was doing this. She met Mac, or should I say, Mac met her for the 1st time, after he pulled her over for speeding through Mt View. After that, it became a regular occurrence for Mac to pull her over. She was always in a big hurry for every little thing. One time we were speeding along, she's taking the curlers out, I'm steering and then when we get to Hilo and she pulls into the feed store for the horse feed. I'm a young kid...I don't really think anything of it. I did know she had been an actress and the buzz was that she had gone to prison, but we didn't know why. Maybe my dad did...idk. My older brother and I guessed she had killed her husband who was a doctor...I even remember seeing a photo of her holding her name and number up in an arrest picture, but we couldn't decide if the photo was real, or some promo shot for some movie she did. Anyway, my brother and I didn't really care one way or the other. All we knew was that she was kind to us and beautiful. We did wonder about her nose. She had such a cute curved nose, and we wondered if she ever had it done. Wikipedia confirmed she had done so early in her career. I remember her dad Frank Mossman. He was 70 years old when I was staying there. He had built a huge shed, almost like a small house, for all of Madge's clothes. I remember going in there a few times with her. There were racks upon racks of cloths of all kinds. Gowns, fur coats, shoes, dresses, purses...you name it. I had never, nor have since, seen so many clothes and stuff. I said earlier that her dad was a mean old German guy. When I knew him, he was 70 or 75 had hearing aids and would walk around the ranch in kaki trousers with a big wet pee stain down the front. Nobody really cared...heck, he didn't care. He just went around doing his thing, fixing stuff. One time I was helping him fix the wire fence to the big pig pen. It was essentially a fenced in muddy pig wallow. The sow kept breaking the fence and I was helping him fix it. He was using the claw part of a hammer to grab hold of the broken barbed wire and stretch it over to the nearest post. He was yelling at me, for some darn reason, and then suddenly raised the hammer over his head getting ready to strike me. I could see fire and rage in his eyes and piss down the front of his pants. I looked him right in the eye and said, if you hit me with that hammer, I'm telling Madge! Boy, he simmered right down and together we finished fixing the fence. I do believe that the reason my dad didn't mary her was because he said, he was afraid she'd work him to death on that ranch of hers. Anyway, he ended up marrying an elementary school principle and she ended up marrying the Japanese cop Mac. He was crazy about her and was very protective of her. I think Madge liked the security he gave her and she felt safe with him. Hope this fills in the blanks for all you Madge Meredith fans.
