I think that having 041 be with 003 instead of 031 is basically the creators probably being concerned about the backlash this episode would have if their most popular character is depicted as a villain in this episode and thus went with one of the triplets instead. However, even if 041 is taking 031's place, it's still not going to sit well with some viewers as: 1. It is still depicting one of the baby seals as a story villain. 2. 088 is still going to have to be a jerk to the baby seal in order to distract 003. This is one of the big reasons why the short should have created new characters for the Elite Four instead of using established characters: it can likely lead to "no win" scenarios to the fans, as you want to root for 088, but also can't see certain characters in a villainous role.

@@TnAdct1 I didn't see #41 as a villain at all and never even thought about what you mentioned. If anything, 88 is the villain for threatening 41. Maybe it's something as simple as 41 wanted to race and 31 didn't. Or Dad is Dad to all the baby seals but with different moms

@@fluffymountainbunny This is exactly what I mean by the "no win" scenario of having established seals as the Elite Four that 88 duels against. 88 is supposed to be the hero of this story, with the viewers intending to root for that seal. However, when you have an established baby seal as part of the Elite Four, having 88 needing to be a jerk to it is not going to sit well with those people whose favorite characters happen to be the baby seals.

@@TnAdct1 I get where you're coming from, but I think you might be overthinking it? It does make sense to have established seals as the racers, giving 88 a challenge to race against. Plus all of the other seals already have their "superpowers". I don't think any less of the babies/other seals/#88 due to the one episode and I wasn't really rooting for anyone in particular, i was just giggling at the whole scenario in general! It's just all a silly goofy race. I'm sure they'll do a follow up where #88 can redeem him/herself too! At the end of the day, this is a kids show (even though us adults watch too) and kids aren't going to look that deeply at it.
