The story of Jane Grey always sat really close to me, especially because she was executed on my birthday. She was just a you child! It was just as surprising to her as to anyone else. Imagine being raised in a normal household, expected to marry wealthy and live a good like. You suddenly become queen, without a warning. And just nine days later you are executed by your cousin, the rightful heir to the throne. Must have been terrifying :/
She wasn't executed 9 days later. It was thought queen Mary didn't want to execute her as Mary viewed her as an innocent pawn. It was Jane's family (her father) that sealed her doom. They wouldn't give up on their treasonable activities so Mary executed Jane to end their rebellion.
Hi, I have just discovered your channel and like it very much. Something I don´t understand is the difference between being "proclaimed" and crowned. I once read an explanation of why Edward V was counted as king but not Jane Grey which said that Edward had been "proclaimed" but Jane had not. Is this correct? and if so, what does being proclaimed actually mean?
I believe the first Queen of England was Seaburg of Wessex. Sorry if I misspelled it but I believe she was the first Queen of England in the House of Wessex
Exactly!! There is no rhyme or reason to it and I hate that there are different standards to who should be included. Maybe if we start calling them Matilda I and Queen Jane I?
@@ChitChatHistory I do! Well, sort of- I don't put "I" cos they're the only monarchs of that name, & I call Matilda "Empress Matilda, Lady of England", & Jane "Queen Jane Grey". Some other people do too- do you watch Claire Ridgway's Anne Boleyn Files channel? She always counts Queen Jane as a Tudor monarch.
It's a little more than just not having a coronation, Matilda and Jane never reigned or sat on the throne. Stephen 1 succeeded Henry 1 and stayed king until his death. Jane was a de facto Queen meaning unlawfully official. The Dudelys and co were her only supporters. Edward VI was only a minor when he died so his father's Act of Succession should still have been valid meaning Mary was the rightful heir. Edward had no business altering that. He said he was doing what his father wanted as Mary and Elizabeth were illegitimate but that was an excuse as Henry still named them heirs regardless.
WHY are they addressing Charles as King Charles III? He was the heir. As soon as the Queen died he became King! His coronation is not actually what makes him King, he was King the moment the Queen died as he was the heir. Matilda was the heir when the King died! She was Queen the moment he died.
@@maryblushes7189 Exactly, that's how I see it too. Henry I even got all his nobles to swear fealty to Matilda as his rightful heir, & swear to support her! I get that people can dispute it, but Matilda & Jane will be staying on _my_ list. R.I.P. Queen Elizabeth II 👑
I just found out I am a distant relative of Anne hyde who was queen I believe the first queen of great Britain. Her father was Edward Hyde . Her children anne who became queen and also Mary all family
Wait....but wasn't Matilda crowned? She was crowned and after refused to sign a coronation oath limiting her power, and Stephen was brought back into the picture.
@Vanessa Read yeah I know but how would have England been if she did become queen in 1603 what would she have done what would she have done to guy fawkes that would be so interesting on how she would have ruled England in 1603 I would have chosen her to rule England instead of James but I feel like when she would have died I don’t think her kids maybe her grandkids could take the throne but for now let’s just say if she ruled in 1603-1610 how would she have ruled in these years and her successor was James the 5th of Scotland imagine what the lady Jane grey could have done if she was queen in 1603
@@budomk9299 yeah I wish Lady Jane grey was never executed or kathrine and Mary grey never displeased Elizabeth the 1 because if they did not then they would have been looked after and next in line to the English throne and one of them lady Jane grey kathrine grey Mary grey could have become queen or there kids maybe but I think lady Jane grey would have the more powerful clam infact Elizabeth the 1 would just have to make the grey claims more stronger then the Stuart because Henry the viii did say when Elizabeth and her kids die then the crown should be passed to his younger sister Mary ears before his older sister Margaret grand kids so Elizabeth could have made it stronger for them to take the English throne before the Stuart and because lady Jane grey Katherine grey and Mary grey are still tudors meaning the Tudor dynasty would not have ended in 1603 would you agree on that
@@budomk9299Yeah I see what you mean as England would've remained a protestant country, and therefore Mary I wouldn't have been queen 👑 as when she took the throne she rather horribly killed hundreds of protestants by burning 🔥them to death and therefore they wouldn't have died if Jane was queen 👑.
