Who is Your Winner? 2003 Worlds Floor Final

I've moved on to Floor Exercise for my Gymnastics History series on Instagram reliving the routines of all the World and Olympic champions since 1972.
The Floor Final at 2003 Worlds in Anaheim 🇺🇸 was a very interesting one, with a case potentially being made for any of the medalists to have won. All three had a 10.0 SV and were pretty even IMO.
This is the order they competed in the Final, with the actual results being the following:
Elena Gomez 🥉 9.675
Cătălina Ponor 🥈 9.700
Daiane dos Santos 🥇 9.737
Personally, I would have had reigning World Champion Elena Gomez first. She had a refinement and polish I found lacking in Ponor and dos Santos. I would have had dos Santos second and Ponor third.
How about you? 🤔

I m Braziliam. and this daiane´s floour routine changed everything in Brazil. the gymnastic become super popular. daiane become a national hero. and inspired directly Rebeca Andrade. hard to me explain the consequences of daiane´s gold medal

I'm from the same city of Daiane dos Santos. She could never imagine that this day would change artistic gymnastics in Brazil forever. The country couldn't stop talking about her, gymnastics was nothing in our country and all of a sudden people knew the name of her skills. She's the biggest reference to the current brazilian gymnasts generation, specially Rebeca Andrade.

Dos Santos for gold. She had the routine pushing the limits of difficulty at the time. Gomez and Ponor are pretty much equivalent but Ponor sold it better despite being short on those twisting leaps and jumps.

Who were the commentators? The narration was both informative to the viewer and supportive of the gymnast.

My scores: Gomez 🇪🇸 9.75 dos Santos 🇧🇷 9.70 Ponor 🇷🇴 9.65 ETA: This probably isn't as accurate as if I actually went through the routines and took the appropriate deductions. But the ranking is correct 😂

Wow! This is a difficult one! The only thing I am sure of is I would have put Ponor in third. I’m leaning Gomez for the win on artistry but Dosantos took my breath away with her tumbling!. Thanks for posting this Wally.

Ponor's form wasn't that bad compared to the others. But this COP could be subjective because the difference between a 0.1 deduction and a 0.05 one was vague. Ponor also used choreography to try to cover up errors, including landing slightly short on the double tuck jump (which is actually a very difficult element)

Ponor is definitely third. I swear the bouncy music won it for Dos Santos.

Can we get a little of this gymnastics back. I dont know what the hell it is today, but its these great big women, legs like bloody kegs, chucking tricks. No artistry, no flexibility, zero originality, its just boring right across the board. It severely lacks in many areas today.

i don’t get the hype of dianne dos santos she has many problems on landings however i like how it impacted brazilian gymnastics

Dos Santos is overrated like many others.....I think some of these wins are deliberate on the judges part, it was part of the DEI in gymnastics to promote black athletes. Gymnastics has never been so corrupt as today.

Her landings were rough but under that COP the deductions applied weren't so heavy. And Dos Santos is celebrated for upping the level of tumbling difficulty, especially for Arabian front tumbles which were (and still are) rare in WAG

That routine was ground breaking in difficulty at the time. A preview of what female gymnasts could learn to tumble if they were allowed to.

Ponor was short on a couple of her dance elements, which was a mandatory deduction under that Code.

@@thesovgcapparently they weren't that short, Ponor still got a 10.0 SV so all her elements got credited. The Popa after the triple spin was clever because it got her 0.1 CV and helped cover up being short on the spin. Crediting her double tuck jump was a bit generously though

They weren't short enough to not get credited, but there should be 0.05 deductions.
