When I shot this video, we were in the middle of road construction season in Indiana (i.e. Summer). It felt like every street, highway and toll road had reduced speed limits, detours or lane restrictions.
I started thinking about the few construction-related signs in my traffic sign collection; and as I dug into my racks of street signs, I found that I actually had more construction signs than I thought.
Construction warning signage was standardized as black text on an orange background in 1971. In this video, I pull out some oldies from before this standard, from yellow, diamond-shaped ROAD CLOSED and DETOUR signs, to a heavy embossed MEN WORKING sign (which has since been replaced with the worker iconography design).
Also, all of my construction signs are steel or aluminum, vs. the standard contractor pressed board material.
Big signs and small signs. Yellow, orange and white. Rectangles, diamonds and squares. A few warning lights. They're all accounted for in the world of construction signs.
If you're looking to start a sign collection and you're okay with building your foundation with construction signs, making connections with a construction company or highway contractor may be a good start. These contractors re-use and cycle through many road signs that, over time, get chipped, scratched and broken. They're always upgrading their stuff, and discarding the old.
