For the future, don't ever put an impact on the steering box. Don't use anything but a puller on the pitman. Your mechanic just sent all sorts of shock into the steering gear and that in time is a bad thing. The pickle fork trick usually breaks the sector shaft at the adjuster on the opposite end. Hand tools only is the rule for the big nut holding the pitman on. Get er done bubba isn't always the way to go. I'm glad you fixed it before you guys had an accident. Happy trucking.

Somewhat, I've learned from mistakes made in the past. Costly mistakes.

Caleb is correct the wedge type separator is for tie rod ends and there is a specific pitman arm puller or you can use a two leg gear puller .

+Freedom Huddle Semi trollish for posting the opinion or not he is correct, the mechanic was a hack. And yes i am master certified before you ask lol. But at least he got you going, looks like that is gonna be fun to play with.

+Caleb Welte laughed when they say they were driving it like that , then big greasy is pounding on the steering sector ,while little greasy is waiting to light his cigarette ,just freaking wow !

+Caleb Welte I've been a mechanic in the army working on HMMWV for 12 years and that's some great advice. Too bad most mechanics think a BFH will always do the job. always use the right tool for the job and work smarter not harder and all that other good stuff.

Nice ride . I think you need to join the MVPA , Military Vehicle Preservation Association , and find a local MVPA chapter . In your area it most likely will be Ohio Motor Pool , very good club . The MV clubs have a a wealth of military knowledge and where to find parts and pieces . You also need to go to some MV shows/swap meets . There is a nice one in Findley , Ohio , or Aberdeen , Maryland in the spring . I belong to Empire State West chapter . BTW , Military vehicles are maintenance intensive ! , That's where" SOLDIER B" comes in , you need a couple of people to help twist a wrench . I myself have a M35A3 , A M37 , A M274 Mule and a M101 trailer . I have a 50 on the Mule and a 30 on the M37 . We just did a show for the VVA , Vietnam Veterans of America . We had 8 MV's , 5 tons , Deuces , CUCV's M37's in convoy thru town , good stuff . We are NOT political , we do this for the VETS period . Contact me , I can fill you in with any questions , stay safe , bob k

With this being a surplus military vehicle you are going to find that there are suspension parts that you will have to go to a bone yard to get. The military and civilian versions are different in the suspension. I worked for a company that sold cutting tools to the Dana Plant in Mishwaka, Indiana. That plant made the heavier duty parts for Hummers which were assembled locally.

@strandtc 8 лет назад
+Ray Lautenschlager Ray, Can you expand on that? A) I don't know of any junk yard with Hummer/Hmmwv parts (anymore) and B) There are alot of differences even in the different HMMWV's due to increasing load capacity over the years, and stronger parts, but I'm unaware that there were only parts that would fit HMMWV's and not Civilian Hummers. What kinds of parts are you talking about?
@RayLautenschlager
@RayLautenschlager 8 лет назад
+Chris Strandt There were certain suspension parts that were made much stronger for the military versions. Most of the heavier duty parts were in the tie rod ends and ball joints. Those were parts made by Dana at that time. Which parts I cannot recall as I was doing this 20 years ago. Differences were subtle to the eye but when you got to see the engineering drawings, which I did, it was obvious. It was all done because of the strains of military off road use.

I'm not up to date on all the variants of the HMMWV's, but I'd be happy to come down your way for an afternoon and go through and point out all the interesting mechanical bits on your truck, regular maintenance items, and points to look out for. Let me know if you guys are interested. These are fun trucks, but are a bit different than your usual SUV. By the way, the tie rod was the whole assembly between the "inner" and "outer" your mechanic was point out. He was pointing out the inner and outer tie rod "ends". And on these trucks, the drag link he pointed out is usually called the "center link".

Army TM 9-2320-280-10. operator level (You, to be used religiously before and after operation) maintenance manual, ...-23&p. Unit level (Your neighborhood mechanic, to be used if the TM ...-10 troubleshooting says the vehicle is not to be operated) maintenance (and parts listing) manual. I might have PDF copies still. A side note: on the driver or passenger side firewall in the engine bay, there is a black two pin connector. This is the fan clutch engagement signal wire. Disconnect it. You want the engine fan running constantly. Reversing while hard-over on the steering will cause a stall in hot weather if the fan has to start up because the engine management computer is dumber than a box of hair.

Maybe stating the obvious but couldn't you make that part and the other new one you need.????? you do have a machine shop just saying.

everyone is bitching about them using a hammer but while a puller is definetaly the right tool sometimes you have to make do...either you dont have an apropriate sized puller or else it was neglected so long its tight enough to break the fingers or base of said puller lol.Personaly since it was junk anyhow I would have prob sliced most of the way thru the pitman so it came off easier but to each their own.Just a side note...you may wanna start looking in advance for some wheel/tire solutions...most places other then dedicated hardcore 4x4 shops will not mess with humvee wheels.
@strandtc
@strandtc 8 лет назад
+mountainmanfab The nice thing about split rims on a Hmmwv is the fact that you can swap tires in your driveway if you have the patience. Just gotta take them to a shop to balance them.
