Fairport Convention's co-founder Simon Nicol doing justice to (the late) Sandy Denny's famous song and re-introducing Dutch singer Linde Nijland in Zaandam, The Netherlands in a church, named De Vermaning van de Doopsgezinde Gemeente. Linde Nijland is known in the Lowlands for her Sandy Denny interpretations.
She has been invited by producer Joe Boyd to perform with a large Fairport Convention line-up before, some years ago, at the Barbican in London. Must have been some celebration of the group, founded in 1967 ;-)
Simon Nicol - guitar, vocals, Ric Sanders - violin, Chris Leslie - many instruments, Dave Pegg - bass guitar, Gerry Conway - drums

I was a student at Lancaster University, Lancs 1969-70 when I first heard this. The song, the Winter in post war England, the rolling hills with crusts of snow edging up to the grey sky….it all made sense. I miss her. Just turned 75. The perfect epilogue.

Chris Whiles brought me to the edge of tears when she sang this at Cropredy a few years ago. She easily caught he spirit of the song that was very reminiscent of Sandy. Years before, Vicky Clayton however, sounded exactly like Sandy and the tears did flow. That was when I realised that too close an imitation can be a most disturbing experience, not at all welcome or enjoyable; spooky in fact.

There's a delicate quality to Linde's voice that brings out the poignancy of Sandy's lyrics--her voice sounds so young and yet she sings the lyrics with the voice of experience to capture the song's sense of regret and sadness. Yes, she should have sung the entire song, as a female singer's tribute to the female singer/songwriter who wrote this lovely song.

A travesty........they sing this song constantly and keep trying to add a new twist but it ends up sounding dreadful...simply because the original is so special....not sure what Simon Nicol was trying to achieve , but it didn't work...the fiddles were almost playing a reel and Linde Nijland maybe a wonderful singer, but it certainly wasn't evident in this performance. For me, the best post Sandy version I have heard was Vikki Clayton.
