Explore the creation of national parks and the importance of finding a balance between public use and ecological preservation.
--
In 1903, US President Theodore Roosevelt took a camping trip in California’s Yosemite Valley with conservationist John Muir. Roosevelt famously loved the outdoors, but Muir had invited him for more than just camping: Yosemite was in danger. It was part of a struggle to set aside land for both preservation and public use. Elyse Cox details the delicate balancing act of creating a national park.

me too! national parks are a part of my childhood, they've always been a part of my life. i live in washington state, seattle to be exact, and on a clear day, you can literally see mount rainier from my friend's house. sometimes when you're driving, you'll look out the window and see mount rainier. i've been to mount rainier so many times. plus, my family and i used to go to yellowstone once every two years. it was kind of a tradition that i loved.

National Parks not only protect specific biospheres but can also provide peace and stability in troubled areas worldwide. When we were making a video on how wildlife is drawn into local conflicts in Congo, we realised just how important NPs are for the region and local communities. This is particularly important when you take into account that 80% (!) of modern armed conflicts occur in biodiversity hotspots.

What a coincidence! I have also learned about the harsh situation in Congo in class at school, and end up watching this video. Before I knew the purpose of the existence of National Park, I did not know why we have to protect animals, especially endangered animals.(I knew protecting those animals are ethically right, but did not know the intention to conserve them....)

Until this pandemic, we had never really explored our local national park; we had always just taken the 'quick and easy' version, a well-known park across the road to walk our dog. Only until COVID hit, did we decide that we should go to the Parklands, and oh, what a gem we discovered! Tracking to new parts every day, we were making a mental map, as an unknown place becomes a known one. The pandemic has brought horrible death, but at least we were able to scrounge some good out of it. Amazing animations (as always) and engaging video! Keep creating TED, and stay safe everyone!
