I’ve been an aircraft mechanic and recreational pilot for most of my life. I’ve got commercial helicopter, airplane and instructor endorsements but the flying career has always been on the back burner because of the huge pay cut and poor working conditions for entry level pilots. The pilot shortage has opened the door. I shall step through.

Do it! My dad was a lifelong pilot and private aircraft owner. He started out with the Civil Air Patrol when he was in his 20's. He became a Highway Patrolman, became a lieutenant and started the helicopter rescue program in Az in the 70's. I think owning his own plane was the highlight of his life, as flying was his passion.
It's all good until another calamity hits the industry. I've seen so many over the years and steady paycheck is more important than carrying people to vacations.
I have so much respect for pilots. I just returned from Europe last month and had great flights. The knowledge required to fly a plane is immense and you are responsible for many lives. Thank you for what you do!
I flew for 40 years, some military then airlines. Now retired. Althought I miss flying, I certainly don't miss those exhausting back to back trips and so many different hotel nights. People only see the glamour part of the job when they see pilots at the airport or onboard. They don't know how demanding the job is.
As someone who travels for a living 40 weeks a year, I can totally appreciate what goes into planning and scheduling flights from a pilots perspective. I often stay at hotels close to the airport on the eve of my departure as often my customers I go see are seldom if ever near an airport. That being said, I often run into pilots/ flight attendants at these hotels and have knocked back if not bought a round of drinks for these hard working folks. I’m always fascinated listening to stories or at the least picking a pilots brain about everything that goes into flying passenger jets ✈️. Should I ever run into you on the road…. Drinks are on me. Stay safe. Oh I yeah I did subscribe.
Paul, My father started flying for Capital Airlines way back in the days where he flew the DC-3 where he met my mother who was a flight attendant. After 27 years of flying for Capital, then United he retired as Captain of the stretch-8's flying from Chicago to Honolulu where he had a 3 day layover then back to Chicago. My dad has been gone for some time now but I still remember being around 4-5 years old standing in the door at our home in Fanwood N.J. listening to my father tell me to help my mom, watch my sisters, take care of the dog while he was in his uniform as he was leaving for Newark airport where he was domiciled at the time. I remember flying as a non-rev to see relatives and other places around the country. Although I'm 63 and haven't flown in many years, your video's bring back a lot of memories and I do appreciate them.
Same here. 73 years old; my airline pilot father has been gone 15 years now. It's a very different family life than what is typical. I remember the first Atlanta airport terminal; it was a converted Quonset hut and there were no concourses, just tarmac and stairs, rain or shine, sweltering hot or freezing cold, gale force winds or not. Then there were wooden barnlike covered concourses snaking out across the tarmac with openings (like a barn) on each side opposite each other for the baggage carts to roar through. We were little and our parents had to hold our hands real tight and be on the alert because they barely slowed down. My father was so tired of hotels and eating out that we never flew anywhere on family trips even though it was free. We either camped or stayed with friends. All the places we could have gone far and near, but we didn't.

I loved reading your story! We lived in Connecticut and I remember my United Airlines pilot father in his brown uniform coming and going as a kid in the 70's. My mom was a UAL 'Stewardess' in the 60's and met my dad on a crew bus in SEA. I was asked by a United pilot if it was hard growing up with a parent gone alot, the answer was no, it's all we knew and even as a little girl I was always so proud of my parents and admired them tremendously. My dad retired after 34 years in 1994 and passed away 3 years ago, he was my best friend and miss him terribly. I watch these types of videos in honor of him and it helps me with my grief. This is under my deceased wife's name but, I was a Flight Test Tech for McDonnell Douglas and my wife and I were both Pilots. Grueling schedule you keep. Keep telling others, it is interesting. I’m 37 years old. I’ve been working in chemical plants since I was 21. Aviation is something I always loved and really wanted to do. I’m starting on the path to get my pilots license and hopefully become a professional pilot. Your video’s have really helped further inspire me to follow my dream. Hopefully I’ll meet you someday in the air.

Freight pilot here, I like watching the process your company utilizes for trips, ours are somewhat the same but different as well. I can tell I am getting old because it seems like all I want to do is arrive at the hotel, exercise and sleep...lots of difference flying the majority of our flights at night. I like your channel, stay safe

Retired out of Newark from CAL in 2002. When I retired, I was tired of the "bag drag" and have really enjoyed it. Moved to Oregon and have not flown an airplane or helicopter since. Everyone is different as we all know. I do occasionally do a little maintenance on small airplanes and love it. Favorite airplanes B-777 and the DC-8. Favorite helicopter is the UH-1H and the Bell 206 Jet Ranger.
It's refreshing how down to earth you are giving insight into your travel work life I like how you indulge into the chocolate dips in Portugal and workout on the hotel bedroom floor this is real life stuff keep up the good work safe flying

My dream as a teenager was to become a pilot. I got a job as a flight attendant with TWA, there were 13 of us that shared a 3 bedroom crash pad in New York, I bought a single engine prop plane, but never made it to the big leagues. I got to see the world on their dime. It was the best time of my life and it made me the person I am today. I have an insane love of travel and cuisine from around the world that was sparked by those years. I really enjoy your approach, your attitude and your presentation. (I couldn't think of another flight based reference)

@jackherstam7935: Kudos on your interesting, well-researched and informative articles on the Simple Flying site (if you are, in fact, THAT Jack Herstam😄). You should think about making your own videos with information for young aspiring pilots that make it clear what the journey to becoming a career pilot involves. I've read many of their comments here on RU-vid, and it's evident many are being misled by claims made on some of the videos, often by other wannabe pilots who have yet to progress very far in their own educations/training. Many quit their jobs and take out 6-figure educational loans, certain that they'll be making "big bucks" as pilots for major airline in under a year's time. I think they could benefit greatly from videos made by someone who not only works as a pilot but also as an aviation journalist who recognizes the need to dispense accurate and thorough information to his readers/viewers.
I recently flew cross country with my 4 year old son and after seeing your video talking about how kids can still ask to see the cockpit, we did that. He had a blast sitting in the captain's seat and meeting the pilots. Thanks for the tip!
I flew so many cross-country trips with my son that he almost achieved frequent flier status before the age of 5😄. He developed a keen interest in airplanes as a toddler and, like you, I would ask if he could visit the cockpit whenever we flew. He flies 747s for a living now.
I have a friend who is a pilot for United Air Lines and never asked him about what happens when he is flies overseas. I use to travel for my company and had some time after work to do some sight seeing. I like your videos because it gives information about what happens when you fly for an airlines.
I’m going to look back to subbing to this channel in a year or two and say “I’m lucky I subbed before 10k” when the channel is at over 200k. One of my favorite aviation channels out there.

Man that looks grueling to me. During my working life I flew cross country for conventions, new product introductions, training, entertaining clients, and visiting our factories in the States and Europe. It was fun for about 5 days at a time. Layovers, cancelled flights, airport food, luggage handling, and ground transportation took a toll. It looks like you enjoy yourself and make the most of the opportunity for adventure. I learned a lot from this video about airline pilots, thanks, and good luck to you.
Hotel accommodation for flight crew are called Crew Tenders. These tenders are negotiated with a hotel for (usually) two years and are for specific flights. Hotels, during the negotiation, get a list of X number of flights, that repeat every week and so does the number of crew not vary too much.
Glad your using Marriott rewards. I used to work in a hotel and there were so many guests that didn’t sign up for the rewards programs. I think they assumed cause their work was paying they wouldn’t qualify for the rewards - which isn’t true ( at least then ). Get all the hotel rewards. Love the videos!
@@ceciliacicchinelli4797 That is indeed sad. I am not sure if the Ritz Carlton deal is still good today. Having this card lets you have access to Marriots club lounge worldwide among other perks. You dont have to qualify for this privielge with hotel stays but rather qualify and pay the high annual fee , like 400 bucks or so
Although you only had two days off after this pairing, you should consider using UPS to get to MSP from EWR for your evening arrivals into EWR. You’d have to go through SDF of course, but the Jumpseat for both legs are usually readily available, and you can book more than a week in advance. We love having off line guys fly with us. I’m retired now after flying at UPS for 31 years.
This is my first video of yours that I have watched and I really enjoyed it. I used to work for Amtrak as a Conductor and our travel was similar. Unlike airline pilots, we have a certain section of territory we operate (freight crews are smaller as their trains are much slower). We had crew callers and we would get in like a line, if you were working the extra board. It would depend upon if you were Conductor qualified or not (an assistant Conductor is what you start as). There would be a list of jobs and how many people were in line. If there were three jobs showing and all three were conductor jobs, I could come in at number 4, and catch the first job if the three in front of me were just ACs. Which happened more often than not. I worked out of Oakland, CA and Sacramento at times as well. There times I could get called out of Oakland for jobs out of Sacramento. The best one to catch was the Coast Starlight, the train that runs between LA and Seattle, to San Luis Obispo. It was an early show time, around 5 am or so, and leave around 630 am or so, if the train was on time. You'd get into San Luis Obispo around 4pm. Here's the beauty of the this run, you'd sit for almost 24 hours (our union rules required us to be paid after 12 hours for up to 8 hours) so this run would turn into, basically a three day run. Being called from Oakland you got paid 4 hours each way, so it was a nice pay day for two days. For our hotels we'd stay at the same ones on our outbound trips, so a lot of the regular crews would leave personal items in their rooms. A few would have cars so they could go do things away from the hotels. A few lived in Bakersfield (the south end of the Sac/Oakland San Joaquin trains because the cost of living was cheaper than the Bay Area. They would stay at a hotel in Oakland when they came up. I lived in Bakersfield for while with an ex girlfriend, she'd come up on Saturday's when I worked a relief run, I worked the first train out of Bakersfield to Oakland and return on the last train of the day out of Oakland. We'd take off to San Francisco for the day and just relax on Sunday before I left to go back on my next trip. Lot's of good times. Not sure what goes on now, that was 20 years ago. I do have one question, who was the "we" you were talking about? Did you go out on the town with fellow crew members? How do you guys do the domestic compared to International flights? I'm curious, because I fly United because I get a Veterans discount and the wife and I have had a lot of positive experiences with United. Sorry this was so long.

Interesting job. I’ve been driving over the road for 46 years now. ( still enjoying it, except for the drivers risking their lives the way they drive) I’ve only flown a couple times, would like to fly again.Always wondered how the pilots managed their flying time & how many hours you could be on duty! This is not an easy life, but having ability to fly the plain and have a coffee in a different city on a different continent every other day is worth of it. It’s a privilege. Kinda gives a sense of freedom.
I love, love your videos. I work on the ramp for an airline. So many of my coworkers complain nonstop about the job. I love the job! I love being in the aviation business, and never take it for granted. Do some pilots complain about the job nonstop?🤣 I suppose if you do something often enough, everything eventually becomes just a job after awhile. Also, I would imagine if two pilots don’t necessarily get along well, it would make for a very uncomfortable work environment🥴
I’m not ramp, but aircraft services although with the huge staff shortage I actually do kinda spill into some of the ramp stuff. Mostly because I can drive! But yeah I enjoy my work and wouldn’t really have it any other way. I never get tired of driving a vehicle that is getting a huge multi million pound flying behemoth of engineering brilliance into position, or being the tiny little human walking alongside that same behemoth if my partner wants to do the driving. I hope I never get bored of scurrying between aircraft as one of a veritable army of people working to make sure every single one of our flying metal behemoths fly safely to its destination, or of enjoying the scent of jet fuel, the aircraft exhaust or even when I’m in our airport building where our crew room is, and I’m in the middle of said building far from any windows but I still know exactly when an aircraft takes off because I can feel the building itself vibrate. Okay the insane security restrictions will always be a bit of a pain in the ass, but still worth it to do work I genuinely enjoy. The funny thing is that I could never actually be a pilot even if I had the money and time to qualify. I don’t travel very well, I like the familiarity of home and my feet very much belong on the ground. I’m not afraid of flying, not after seeing the insane amount of effort put into making each flight safe. But the lack of space would drive me crazy and I’d genuinely pity the poor bastard assigned to be stuck in a room smaller than some closets with me for hours on end. 🤣 But I’m curious though, and as a subject aviation is fascinating. Hence why I’m watching this video. But yeah I do hear pilots complaining about this and that as we ride the staff bus to and from the terminal and staff car park. I’m convinced half of them may well be boys in grown up bodies, but that’s a topic for another day.

As an amateur radio operator, I have occasionally talked to commercial pilots, who are also amateur radio operators, on their planes HF radio. I assumed they did as a distraction on long haul flights.
I got a 7-day to Tahiti & a 4-day to HKG ON TNE HAND-OVER!!!!!!!1997!!!! It was senior to God & unfortunately the gal’s hubby died!!! But Paul=history!!!!!!!
Just pulled this channel up and am quite impressed with Paul and the way he has put this channel together. It is an experience following him through his day. My problem is that I absolutely love aviation and have always wanted to be a pilot. I am minimally involved in aviation now but over and over realize the mistake I made early on by not taking advantage of the opportunity VA had given me. That was the chance to pursue that career by first getting my pilots license and then VA would have sponsored me the rest of the way. It haunts me as now I am retired from a career I actually never enjoyed. Just thinking out loud. Thanks for sharing Paul.
