Who pays when a City of San Diego trash truck destroys your garbage bin or takes it altogether?
CBS 8 is Working for You to get answers from the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department.
“It’s frustrating, it’s very frustrating. I was like, ‘Oh no, not again. Not again, here we go again,’” said Clairemont resident, Lee Ann Ramsey, whose had three bins destroyed by a city garbage truck.
“Oh they destroy my cans, they destroyed the last ones I had, and my dad actually bought me two to help out and I’ve only had them a couple years, and they’ve already destroyed one of the trash cans already.”

Perhaps make them half plastic and rubber so they don't crack.put them old tires to use.

waste management , EDCO charge for trash pick up, that's why they can exchange bins for free. on the other hand the city of SD does not charge for trash pick up its a cost the city millions every year to provide trash service. just FYI

Only one of my 5 cans has ever been damaged enough to need replacement. I messaged EDCO our local trash company the truck crushed my trash can and they replaced it for free the same day. One of my recycling bins went missing, and honestly I blame my neighbor as his beat up one was gone with a newer looking one and mine was gone same day. Either way I called EDCO again and they brought me another recycle bin for free. Apparently you can have as many recycle bins (I have 3) for free if you ask. But if wanted a 2nd trash bin it was $49. No idea if they charge for trash bins that go missing.

The best part of the story is the trash can lid stuck onto the power pole. 😊

If the bin says on the side ( property of the city ) they can do what they want to them and you should be getting the bins free of charge

@AZTrashTrucks

@CBS 8 San Diego The reason for the Containers being damaged is because the Pressure on the grippers is far too high, as well as the arm speed. The first clip in the video is of an older can, A Zarn container, which was due to be replaced, as they do not function well with automated trucks. The city provides free trash and recycling services to residents, but the Residents must pay for their container, otherwise, the service could not be provided. As for her Neighbors container, that is an older container as well that's deteriorating. It is on the resident to call the city for a new container, not the driver to report it. I would be happy to interview via a Virtual meeting if you desire any further info.

I've never heard of a city providing free trash and recycling services. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Even if they didn't have to pay an actual bill, they're paying it out of other taxes. Why should residents have to pay to have broken things replaced if it's the city that breaks it? If your mailman breaks your mailbox, should you have to pay for it? If so, what's the mailman's incentive to be more gentle with your mailbox?

In my miserable town their pick up crew beat up the can so badly the wheels came off and despite repeated phone calls they refused to replace the can even though I said I’d pay for a new one. Well a new mayor got rid of that company and hired a new great trash company only to have the horrible company dump a lot of money to push his competitor to win the mayors race. It also helped a local news station also pushed the competitor . So the golden boy of the horrible company won and the great new trash company got fired. I HATE this town.

Lid replacements are free... if you go down to pick it up. There's also the effort that's needed to knock the pins out to detach the old lid and install the new pins/lid. On mine, one pin came out easily, the other one required me to cut the pin apart with a rotary tool before I could get it out.
@timhaigh2484
@timhaigh2484 8 месяцев назад
Good point about the pins. I had the same experience. One pin came out easily, the other not so much. The video I watched to see how to do the swap suggested using a tool that is not common to most households.
@gungho1284

They broke my recycle bin. The claw squeezes too hard sometimes. They don't bring a replacement for free so I put the cardboard in the regular trash. They should have an option to sign up for a free replacement every five years or so, based on the average lifespan of the bins.

I'm speechless at people defending the city, proposing that there's another side to the story. What other side is there? The only thing that can damaged those trashcans like that is the hydraulic arms on a garbage truck handling these too roughly. Anybody who is the one responsible for rolling these out each week from their home knows this because they see the random damage that occurs on them.

Its city property so they break it and should replace them for free. If the resident put in hot ashes, or a car wrecks into it, the insurance company pays and the resident pays if its burned by ashes.
@rickchapman9232

You don’t get a warranty. On the cans it says property of the city you’re in. That means the city is the owner of the trash can.

Live in the county of San Diego. Have contract trash service. They replace damaged containers as a part of the monthly service. Lived in the city of San Diego for nearly 40 years. Trash, water, sewer services, etc. provided by the government. Typical.

Same company comes and replace it after a week. Cheap bins. They used to last. And also have a metal pipe cross member for structural support.

Let’s face it. The underlying issue is that the armature that grabs and elevates the bin is built for speed. The bins are treated as expendable. What is really needed is a newly designed armature that treats the bins with a lot more care. The only way a bin would survive for a long time with the dynamic loads it experiences on trash day is for it to be made of steel, which is heavy and prohibitively expensive.
