Based off of its internationally renowned counter-part, the hockey world too has a large scale tournament involving some of Europe's best ice hockey franchises.
For more info on how the teams are drawn, check this link out: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champio...

This tournament has a lot of potential. It will take time to grow, but I believe they can do it. Smaller hockey countries needs a tournament like this. It gives them opportunities to measure their skills and abilities, also helps them to learn, grow and keeping them self updated. 7 games in the worlds championships per season is not enough, and if your country struggles in Division 1 A, than that will increase the problems. Countries like Great Britain, Belarus, Norway, Denmark, Italy, France etc. can learn a lot from playing the best club teams from Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Czech etc. The mix of former NHLers, NHL rejects, unknown players from various countries and upcoming young prospects makes it exiting to follow. I believe this tournament will make differences in the future NHL drafts. Might become a trend that very talented 16 and 17 year olds wants to play in strong European teams before they reach their draft. Similar to what Auston Matthews did when he represented Zurich Lions in the Swiss league. If a youngster could win the league + the playoffs and become MVP in any country, win the CHL + MVP, then represent a country in the WC's before the draft. Sounds like a safe pathway to make it high in the draft, and become a regular in the big league.

Actually a few days after this video came out I saw a CHL game between the Cardiff Devils and HC Davos in Cardiff. The atmosphere was great, especially the travelling Davos fans. I had no idea until a few hours before the game that British people even knew what hockey was.

Evan Escher - You'd be surprised how much of a following it has here. We now have 12 teams from England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland. And of course we know what hockey is, just "hockey" is field hockey, you just have to specify "ice" hockey. Also, Cardiff is my team, thanks! :D

Sir Woolly Jumper yeah I remember asking a bunch of people at the game, and they all had their favorite nhl teams. Devils won that game 4-3 in OT I believe.

They should have the champion of the CHL vs the best Khl team

I am all in for a short 3 games in 3 days tournament between CHL, KHL and NHL champions in the beginning of season. I see that more attractive than sort of NHL Premiere with 2 NHL teams playing each other in Europe.

the KHL sponsored big parts of the 2008 tournament. but because no khl couldn't win (winner was ZSC Lions from switzerland - the team where auston matthews played for one season) they didn't want to participate anymore. no russian money = no tournament

The Shark Ninja True it got league in the name, but it's more like a mini league/tournament. Far from a regular league. I don't blame people for being confused, but I say blame football. They had the first champions league lol. If they didn't have the success than basketball and hockey would not adapt it. If you get knocked out in the group, you only get to play 6 games. The number of games is a lot less than the national league games in each country. If you don't perform well enough in the domestic leagues, than there will be no CHL spot. This is a good way for sure to find the best talent and teams in Europe, and keeping Europeans and their leagues competitive. I would love to see more young North American prospects like Auston Matthews in the CHL. Might become the new trend and a way to enter NHL one day. Zurich Lions was a good club team for him. More 16 and 17 year olds should consider to take Matthews pathway.

Why doesn't the khl participate?
@alexanderak3881
@alexanderak3881 6 лет назад
Alex Coman Because just about any KHL team would beat all of the CHL teams. KHL is the second highest level in the world.

Alex Coman khl would probably beat most or all those teams with ease. Yeah there would be occasional upsets but khl is generally just better

The KHL teams should join the Champions Hockey League. I understand that the KHL is trying to become massive and a global competition. However I'm not certain the KHL winner is really the best team in Europe. For e.g several years ago a team that existed barely for 2 years (Lev Praha from Czech Republic) reached the KHL final.. Besides that it contains other non Russian teams which aren't that great. Jokerit from Finland wasn't even in the top 2 of Finland's national league since 2007. Dinamo Riga was a team built specifically for the KHL and has had modest results.

When you talk about a club from Prague in the KHL then remember how Vegas reached the final in the first season in the NHL.There is little money in the Champions League and few worthy teams.Only Swedish and Finnish teams will be serious competitors to clubs from the KHL.The KHL has 10-12 strong teams that can definitely win the Champions League
@TurinStark5
@TurinStark5 4 года назад
@@damonkennett7956 Finnish teams have been performing poorly in the CHL although they won it once. KHL teams would compete with the SHL teams (or a Finnish/Czech one if they'd be lucky) The important point is that even though KHL is stronger than the SHL it doesn't mean the KHL would automatically win it
@damonkennett7956
@damonkennett7956 4 года назад
@@TurinStark5 I agree with you but you need to take into account the budgets of the teams.Many average KHL clubs can afford more than the top clubs in Europe. In addition, I do not think that 3 million euros that are divided into all teams interest to KHL clubs.I think we are close to seeing NHL and KHL matches more than matches in the Champions League, negotiations about this were already underway at the beginning of the season
