Idk if youve figured everything out byt heres a quick rundown just in case. Sorry for the long comment but im passionate about breaking down and studying deep lyrics haha. Its about two kids who were prerty much alone and got addicted to drugs at a young age. They shared a love for mysic and writing, so they bonded over writing and tried to use the words as a relief from the pains of their addictions. The story is told from the perspective of him walking around the same place they used to hang out; hes sober now and foghting his old addictions, but his friend passed away. Some of my favorite lyrics in this song are "Heavens wasted on the dead". When you think about it in perspectives of the song you think about all of the living people who struggle with addictions and pain and sickness every day. We have to live with those here on an imperfect earth, while those who have passed on dont have to worry about anything, but they still get a perfect world. Its ironic bc the people who need heaven the most are the living who go throug all those problems. In my opinion, he may not be the greatest musician (i still think it sounds amazing) but hes without a doubt the #1 songwriter ive ever heard

He is an amazing songwriter, but this is an odd song for someone to suggest. You kinda have to know the backstory. He was the (accidental) child of teens who were not a good match. It kinda fucked him up. Pick any song from his album “Southeastern” or “Something More Than Free” would be a way better introduction.
