The race to the North Pole took 300 years and ended in two men pitted against each other, in an attempt to convince the world who had got their first. But one of them was lying.

I like that the Russians win the North Pole race. ;) As if we need proofs on Space race (USSR:USA race was about 14:1 or 12:3), we should need the proofs on NP race. ;)

@@badmaniak The picture with thumbnails (Daria's map) and not the North Pole is the place from which this civilization originated. It is the location where the human race descended to this planet. One nation on this planet preserves this tradition and passes it down from generation to generation. Coincidentally, this nation, according to all research, has the oldest DNA and the state emblem, which is of the same shape as the four islands of Daria that are beneath the ice and are located on Mercator's maps.

Roald Amundsen actually flew over the North Pole, not in an airplane, but rather, an Airship named "the Norge" (aka the Norway), as he was Norwegian. He not only was the first to reach both poles, but he also was the first to successfully traverse the Northwest Passage, where the Franklin Expedition had previously failed (killing their entire crew, in the process). There is actually a decent Documentary on his Northwest Passage Voyage, called "The Search for the Northwest Passage" which comes in Two Parts (the first covering the Failed Franklin Expedition and the Second covering the Successful Expedition by Roald Amundsen). I suggest that anyone interested in the topic, check it out.

Johnny, You should do a sequel about Fridtjof Nansen and his voyage on the Fram. I learned about him in my oceanography course in college because of his work in advancing the knowledge of Arctic currents. From studying how the wreckage of an American ship that went from Siberia to the North Atlantic he could take the same journey in a ship specifically designed for it. During the Fram’s journey he got very close to the North Pole.

Matthew Henson faced discrimination throughout his life, both before and during his time as a member of Robert Peary's team. As the only black member of the team, he faced prejudice and racism from some of his fellow team members, and his contributions to the expedition were often overlooked or minimized. He also faced discrimination in his personal life, including being denied service at restaurants and hotels due to his race. Despite these challenges, Henson was able to overcome them and play a crucial role in the success of the expedition.

It all goes back to the Biblical tale of Noah, his sons, and a curse. The belief was that Ham was cursed by his father Noah in Genesis, and therefore all of his offspring would be cursed as would be Canaan. And Ham would be a servant to his brothers. So many ancient Jewish and Christian folklore has believed anyone with Black skin received “the mark” or the curse from God. This is what allowed so many to openly discriminate Black people and take their inventions, ideas, discoveries and contributions. *They genuinely believed they were doing God’s work.* Whether said person believed in the Bible or not, the culture of divine superiority of the White race permeated all corners of the globe. And the subjugation of Blacks to be the servants of others.

Correction: At 5:40 you show a picture of two Sámi men, not Inuit. Amundsen got help from these two, Samuel Johannesen Balto and Ole Nielsen Ravna, since the Sámi people are also used to the arctic climate. Also Amundsens (and Fridtjof Nansen) wore clothes made by the Sámi.

Epic video! As someone from the Arctic (Alaska) it's great to see the history being told to a larger audience. Fred Cook is infamous in Alaska for faking his summit of Denali. Another incredible explorer who devoted his life to science and teaching others about the Arctic rather than exploiting it is Brad Washburn -- debunking Cook's claims about summiting Denali while surveying the Alaska range with my grandfather in the 1950s.

I believe that Henson is the first man to reach the North Pole. And if he isn’t the man to step foot on ice on the pole, he was the reason that somebody else did. One of the most underrated historical figures I’ve learned about.

Sir, thank you for your videos. I take the liberty of suggesting a subject which has not yet been tackled and which is one of the big stories of the last decade; the disappearance of flight MH 370. I also wish you to be able to do some time in France in a bakery because I saw that it is one of your projects. Thank you and good continuation Mr Harris.

I love your narrating, story telling, and facial expression, it really helps bring out the tone of the history of the north pole. Thank you for making and sharing this. I am now also appalled at this travesty.

Matthew Henson is the MVP of this whole saga. Incredibly inspirational gentleman. Found his autobiography on audiobook and listened to it immediately after watching this video. Almost did an all nighter. Highly recommend it!!

Hi Johnny! I commented on other videos recently where I wanted to know if you would address the situation with betterhelp, where they were found to sell user medical data to other entities without permission. I know that you have talked about privacy previously and the importance of using vpn and other stuff but I know that they are your sponsor and don't know if that's a reason to not address it. Data privacy is very important specially Medical health data.

Thank you for bringing this up super important. Also VPNs only help so much all they do is change your IP address nothing more
@blackhawk1211
@blackhawk1211 Год назад
@@matthewbass8152 The reason that I’m bringing this up is because there might be a lot of users who do not know about this situation and I think because he is promoting better help he should also bring this to peoples’ attention that hey they have been found to sell user data when they said they won’t and we’re fined 7.8 mil in a settlement, so even though they have great service and we don’t know if they will violate this again because obviously we can’t trust them, so do this at your own discretion.

I'm a bit sad Johnny doesn't mention August Petermann at all in this episode. This guy was the driving force in how people got funded those expeditions to the North Pole.
