I could be wrong, but didn't the Scots have 8-thousand men or thereabouts? By the standard of the time, that is a force to be reckoned with even if outnumbered. That was not the same as the revolt of Wallace, whose fighters were more clandestine guerillas, as opposed to an actual army. Bannockburn was a tremendous display of courage, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't so epic as that.
@airsir9559
@airsir9559 3 года назад
The reason the writers changed Wallace's wife's name was because they thought people might think they were ripping off Robin Hood if they'd kept it as Marian. Also, I think Wallace's best friend in the movie was meant to serve as a stand in for Andrew De Moray.

This movie was truly a film of its time. No general audience in 1995 gonna take a trip to the library to fact check these bits. If this came out today, these writers would be cancelled into oblivion for rewriting history. I couldn’t even connect any bit of this research into Braveheart. It’s just so different in every way to what actually happened.

There was a battle of Sterling, doesn't matter that bridge wasn't involved. He did venture into Northern England. He did lose battle at Falkirk. He did hide for ages then caught and executed at London. There was a battle of Bannockburn in which Robert Bruce and the Scots won decisively vastly outnumbered. How's that so different?

The movie Braveheart is regarded by experts as the second most historically inaccurate movies of all time. There are also many experts in Scotland who regard the film as qualifying as propaganda.
@scottw.3258
@scottw.3258 2 года назад
I view the film as insulting, in all honesty. I feel if someone was going to make a film about the Wars of Independence, then give it a valid attempt. Outlaw King, for example was excellent. Yes, they crossed over timelines, and some part of the film were inaccurate - Such as Edward II fighting at Loudoun Hill, and being allowed to walk away - but over all, they actually made an effort to get things right, and succeeded in doing so. Braveheart was in essence a fairytale. They took names, and bastardised them. So much was wrong with the film, from costume, to battle tactics, to locations, lack of a bridge at Stirling...the list goes on. Awful film, and as you say, propaganda nonsense.

Look, you might hate me for this. I hate historical inaccuracy very much and it usually ruins the movie, but I find that it's a different story with this one. I saw this movie before finding out the truth and I really loved it. I found it inspiring and beautiful. Yes, I was quite disappointed to find out about some 'truths' a few days after seeing it, including the inexistant relationship with the queen. Now let's be serious, every historical movie has to be a bit 'dramatized' in order to make it more interesting and to fill the spots between the known facts. I'm not from Scotland and I'm not a patriot, maybe that's why I don't feel insulted. Yet, I must admit that there are a lot of 'mistakes'. However, we know that the movie was rather based on the poem, furthermore it follows its 'plot'. The beginning ('history was written by those who have hanged heroes') suggests from the very start that the story will be quite different from what is known. I agree that more research would have made the movie better. I still like the movie. Whether William was this 'Scottish Jesus' figure or not, he was a hero after all and he fought for what he believed in, which is truly admirable.

Well, at least the Claymore directional landmine was named after the sword. And since 1960, it's always been a badass command-detonated landmine.

as a child when I first watched the movie, I didn't know the history of the true William Wallace story, but I enjoyed the movie. Now that I know the movie is 90% false, I still love the movie. I think people fail to realize that it's a movie and there really isn't any 100% accurate films out there. What the movie does do is bring awareness to who William Wallace was

Yeah.... I knew the real history... But the movie was really cool. I was at London Heathrow some years ago, I heard a customs officer ask an American how long he would be in country. He smiled and replied " Just long enough to get to Scotland." I thought that was cool as well..... Lol

The tradition of plad originated long before Christianity arrived in Europe. All celts used to to some degree, even the Irish and Britons. Secondly blue face paint was held onto by the picts but was once again, a tradition with all Britannian celts. The reason it wouldn't be used in late-medieval Scotland is because Britannia had long been Christiansted by that point.

Braveheart was mostly historical fiction. But it did do one thing right and that is to show people who William Wallace was and would inspire people to study about the man behind the legend. Also the film is more of an embellished tale bravery and defiance. In the end they did win their freedom from the English and centuries later they join the union of Great Britain of their own free will not forced. Also in the film's opening the narrator did emphasize that most historians would call him a liar(meaning they knew that they embellished the history/tale) and that he also said that history is written by those who have hanged heroes. I still liked the film. But Outlaw King does a better job with the historical stuff even tho they get several things wrong as well like the timelines as well as the fighting stuff in the sparing match in the beginning(go see Shadiversity youtube video on Outlaw King it is a great watch and he knows what he is talking about when it comes to medieval know how).

Great video about Wallace filled with fantastic information to help most people outside of Scotland understand how inaccurate "Braveheart" truly is. Even though it is inaccurate, us Scots cant help but still love the movie regardless. The only thing that bugged me is plaid. We dont wear plaid we wear Tartan, and im well aware that plaid is essentially another name that mainly Americans used but if you're gonna do a video about Scotland at least call our Tartan, well Tartan 😂

Enjoyed the movie, feel like I always knew it was heavily changed for the Hollywood scene.. but then again a movie based in pure realism, especially in this time period.. may not have been the most enjoyable thing.
