Who's Cards Will Increase In Value The Most? Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, or Josh Gibson

I know that a lot of collectors don't care about card values. Others care about them a LOT. There's not a right or a wrong way to collect, but these guys are three of the biggest names in the hobby. I always find it interesting trying to find predict and discuss future card values, and doing so for these three baseball greats, is especially interesting for me. Mickey Mantle has been the hobby darling for decades. Willie Mays may be the biggest all around player of all time and recently passed away. Josh Gibson recently entered the MLB record books and has gotten a lot of attention. Who will increase in value the most over the next 5 years? None of us knows, but it's certainly an interesting topic to hypothesize about.

I love holding raw, vintage cards in hand. Give me a stack of raw, vintage cards with rounded corners all day. There's something about it that modern cards can't replicate. That being said, I like slabbed cards for display purposes and my preference is SGC for vintage. They simply look better than PSA (in my opinion), are cheaper to slab and their service is faster.

I was for years a raw cards only guy. For years and years. I resisted encapsulating my cards. I had really high grade cards almost entirely. When grading came out the astronomical increase of graded cards over raw was just to much to ignore. I eventually, put together a PSA 8 1960 set rising to #2 on the registry. I kept my 59 set raw for quite awhile. I then graded all the key cards and had them all in 8's. They became so valuable that I thought keeping was beyond what I felt comfortable sitting in my closet. So I sold everything and bought back some of the cards that I felt PSA had under graded. I took them out of the holders and held them raw like I always preferred. After about ten years I went back heavy in the hobby, and again and when I graded I moved to SGC. Why, you ask? The answer is quite simple. Cards graded by PSA are cards that are graded by a robot it seems. Weird miniscule imperfections count off big at PSA. Cards graded by SGC seem like they are graded by collectors. Eye appeal is huge at SGC and an inconvenience at PSA.

Grading by a human definitely allows the human brain to take into account how appealing something looks. PSA, like you say, certainly seems robotic.

Thanks for the excellent video. Just bought a 56 Mantle at the Chantilly Show. I use SGC for vintage pre 1980 and PSA for modern. I trust SGC for vintage and PSA for modern cards. I grade only for my collection. Cards that mean something to me.

@@vintagecollector5340 I guess you are right about that but the everyone else’s have turned this hobby on it’s head. It’s not fun. I came from a time when Saturday mornings meant going to trade day. Where having pack wars meant the looser would get to keep one card from his pack. Where 4 to 6 guys would break four or more boxes of product. We would draw numbers from hat and each spot had a predetermined price depending on the boxes total. First place got the choice of best card from all boxes and then next and next and so forth until all cards were divided up. Each one of us would open packs and sort cards into piles or singles. That was fun and everyone bought into these breaks at the price they could afford. Sometimes a guy would trade his number 1 slot away because could afford that week. Also the grading of cards has changed things.

Good video. Mantle is the reason I won’t ever complete most of the annual HOF sets. Last year at the National I had to pay-up for the ‘61 Mantle. Was my most expensive pick-up but my least favorite card. I paid less for a ‘52 Musial SGC 8.5 than I did for a ‘61 Mantle PSA 8. Now down to 2 cards left on my ‘61 HOF set a leader with Mantle on it and Eddie Mathews. Most years you can buy both Aaron and Mays for the price of the Mantle. Take them out and you can get 10-12 HOFers for the price.

Good video about viewers feelings on the values and potential increases. First off, Mays was awesome! His longevity (24 seasons!) allowed him to put up great career stats. But he wasn't as good as Mickey Mantle. Mickey played a whole career with a bad knee and still played Centerfield as well as Mays and hit way better. Just as an aside, Joe DiMaggio was better, offensively and defensively, than both. You know who said that, other than me, lol? Mickey and Willie. ⚾ 🇺🇲

I'm not sure this is polarizing. At least, it shouldn't be. To each his own when it comes to grading companies and how important it is for each collector to have (or not have) consistency in his/her collection. I am 100% PSA.* I began sending cards for grading around 2001 and chose PSA. From that point forward, when buying graded cards, it was always PSA. When I would send additional cards for grading, I sent to PSA. For me, it is important to have consistency in my collection (which requires intentionality). Until recently, I did not participate in the PSA Registry. For me, collecting cards is not about competing. It is about building the nicest (and most presentable) collection that I can. I like the way my cards look in PSA holders. I want the slabs to fit together and to look uniform. Being 100% PSA also allows me to narrow my searches (on-line and at shows). For example, I do not search for SGC slabbed cards on-line, nor do I look at SGC cards when I am at a show. If a dealer has SGC slabs, my eyes just move along to a dealer with PSA slabs. It is not a superiority thing. Being 100% PSA is one tool that I use to narrow and prioritize my approach to card collecting. "Ruling out" certain types/categories/eras of cards provides clarity for me when collecting. For example, I have imposed a few rules on myself: 1/Only PSA slabs; 2/ Only collector grade+; 3/ nothing after 1980; 4/ No blank back cards; 5/ No game cards; 6/ No hand cut cards; and 7/ No cards with qualifiers. Having these rules makes collecting MUCH more enjoyable for me. It may sound odd, but narrowing one's field of vision is liberating. Focusing provides clarity . . . and it stunts impulsivities. *One time, I bought a card that was in a SGC slab. I was having a hard time finding a high-end example in a PSA slab. But, I crossed it over from an SGC 8 to a PSA 7.5.
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards 3 месяца назад
Great comments and points. I think your point about being 100% psa really helps to narrow down your searching for cards, which can be helpful...for sure!! I think the reason why it's polarizing is because there are some people that are so AGAINST PSA and others are so IN FAVOR of PSA. Some people don't care...but others have strong opinions one way or another.

I have graded cards in my collection from PSA, BGS, and SGC. All of the PSA’s were bought already graded when they were all I knew. My first submission was to BGS when they were the perceived #2 because my LCS at the time partnered with them. Yeah it was during COVID, but the lack of communication rubbed me wrong. My next submission was to SGC, and I was thrilled with the quality of work, timeline, and customer service. Since then I have only submitted to them because quite simply I am comfortable with them. I’m just saying I trusted them with my Stan Musial 1948 bowman that came back an expected 1 assigned grade. I have graded vintage to ultra modern cards with SGC, and will continue to for the foreseeable future.

A few months ago. You immediately posted a video, the ''breaking news'', on your RU-vid channel that SGC got bought by the Collectors Universe. Same company, which owns PSA. Most of the community- losing their minds. It woke up all of the dogs in my neighborhood. Including my own. But it's okay Graig, she's still a fan. It was also IMO, a wake up call that maybe perhaps, we should, not just have any allegiance to any, one grading company. I don't know if they have our best interests, either. But I do like raw cards. I have PSA slabs. SGC slabs. I just focus more on what I could afford. Me personally, I am not going to over spend, due to a label. But to each his or her own. Sometimes PSA may make sense. Sometimes SGC makes sense. Or just leaving the card ungraded, which sometimes I do, too. Could make sense as well. Maybe in the future AI technology... will take over. But as you said, the future, is uncertain. Just unfortunate SGC is, not going to compete with PSA. But money talks. By the way, Graig. I am adding, the ''collect what you like'' to the graveyard. Right beside ''Collectors grade.'' I will collect what both makes me feel everything... and nothing. Great video. Thanks, Graig!.

Graig- I hate PSA and always have cause in reality and its coming to forefront now is they don't care about the collector...their wait times are atrocious, customer service sucks.....for me I do three things ...the Cards that have very little value but mean something to me get Mag Pro with my Special label and they look 10 times better than PSA anyway...Number 2 I use SGC for cards in my collection that might carry more value and higher end cards cause they just hold their value and look great in the Tux Holder...For my cards say between 20-50 bucks I use CGC as they have maybe the most beautiful slabs as far as the Plastic is concerned...plus I pay 8.80 for each card to get graded and will have them back in 30 days at the worst....SGC 10-15 day turnaround....I have moved alot of cards to MAG PRO just cause the grading by all companies is too inconsistent and I'm tired of thinking and truly believing I'm sending in a 7 to have it come back a 5 just crushed the whole process....You get a grader who is human having a bad day, hung over or whatever else could be going on and your cards get hammered.....so its really a crap shoot....I don't even have a PSA slab in my collection cause besides all that I said their slabs are the worst of the 4 big companies.....I like my slabs to look good so SGC and CGC are my go to and I don't ever see that changing..... Grading companies and their slabs. When buying, I’m actually slabnostic. I’m not too concerned about which slab it’s in as long as it’s a PSA, SGC, or a Beckett. I have even bought less expensive cards in a Tag, and CSG slab. When deciding which company to submit to I usually compare the prices of the card in each grade between SGC and PSA and if there is not a huge difference in price, I go with SGC. I submit to PSA if the card in their slab per grade commands a premium. As far as quality of slabs go, I think the best quality slab is actually the Beckett, then SGC, and PSA last of the theee. I base this ranking purely on anecdotal evidence. The only slabs I’ve had get serious scratches or broken corners when dropped have been PSA. I’ve not had a new PSA slab in hand yet so, I’m aware my ranking of slab quality may change. All that said, I think most cards look better in the SGC slab and they are currently less expensive to have grade your cards. They also don’t “upcharge” you for a particularly nice/ high grade valuable card.

Here is my take on your question about grading companies or raw. I have always preferred to get my valuable cards graded over keeping them raw. Back in the 1990s and even early 2000s I was always a BVG (BGS) guy. I liked the slabs better than PSA, thought Beckett did a better overall job of grading, and felt that with the subgrades I could get a better idea of how that card got the grade it received. PSA always seemed to me to be inconsistent. To this day, I still do NOT like PSA slabs and would never send my cards to be graded by them, but since about 2010 until present I only send my submissions to SGC. I love the look of the SGC Slabs and they seem to be gaining in popularity. I also love the fact that it only takes 2-3 weeks to get my cards back with a lower price. Their customer service is top notch as well and the grading seems to be quite accurate.

Given my current collecting habits, SGC is my preferred option for my cards (either buying cards already in SGC slabs, or buying raw and grading with SGC). While I do not love the large grade number on the SGC slab, I do feel like vintage cards look the most like "framed artwork" in the tuxedo and therefore look nicer displayed in my case next to my home office. While I do sell some cards on eBay, most of my cards are for PC purposes, so buying raw and grading for $15 with SGC is a more attractive option, and allows me to use more of my hobby dollars on actual cards versus the grading fees.
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards 3 месяца назад
It really does feel like framing antique art. Good analogy.
@Tim.K.1976
@Tim.K.1976 3 месяца назад
Answer for next weeks question. SGC I love the tuxedo look (except for all black cards) plus for a long time you have been able to pick up SGC slabs for less money than PSA graded cards(?). No argument that SGC's turn around time and customer service are a lot better and at a cheeper price point than PSA it's kind of a no brainer for me, I also normally route for the under dog. I will buy PSA slabbed cards off of eBay and MySlabs but probably won't be submitting any more cards to PSA for grading unless it is an all black card. I will never understand why so many collectors are so hung up on PSA but I do have to say that I do like the registry and can't wait to hopefully see one from SGC. For raw cards my whole childhood collection are still raw and probably won't ever get them graded, I want to keep them exactly how I remembered them as a kid. Most of them are still in the same top loaders. Great question I can't wait to hear all the responses.

Ive been thinking about your question. I used to think PSA looked more professional. SGC looked like getting something authenticated by your local card shop. I pretty much missed the rise of grading. Now SGC looks more professional and vintage looks better in the "bow tie". I cant afford grading now on my tiny budget. Not that im delusional about the condition of my cards, but i think they're great. If i got them graded now, id probably be disappointed. I dont care about the number now, but if a card got a 5, eventually I'd probably want to upgrade. Theyre still raw and perfect for me.

I think the correct question is, which of these will decrease in value the least. The men who watched mantle and mays play are in their 70s now. It was them, and the generation ahead of them that drove demand for these cards. These guys are no longer in the phase where they’re accumulating stuff.the next five years will see a supply / demand mismatch where there are far fewer buyers for these cards compared to 10 or 20 years ago. This will suppress prices.

Interesting video … I think the answer would have been Mantle if you’d asked what cards will be most valuable versus have the most growth. As for grading, PSA is king. I concede they are not as consistent as SGC. And, I do own SGC cards. But, PSA’s re-sale value, liquidity, set registry, slab and guaranty are tough to beat. SGC has caught up some but PSA cards still have a bigger audience and the fact that modern card collectors use PSA almost exclusively means that if/when they move into vintage, they are likelier to want PSA slabs. Also, with the upgrades in PSA slabs, I think the slabs are much sturdier than SGC. The security features are also nice. And, SGC has no equivalent to the PSA guaranty, at least as far as I know.

I think Mays card value will be more stable and maintain its value than those of other superstars that have passed away. While Jim brown, Jerry west, etc prices spiked and then immediately declined after their passing was predictable I think Mays interest will have a higher likelihood of sustainability. Reason being is that baseball cards and baseball in general are really America’s pastime and recognized as such by mainstream America. Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson are more historical figures as opposed to just famous athletes. While Jim brown and Jerry west were just as dominant in their respective sports Football and basketball are just not held in the same regard by the masses. You touched on it in the video - prices and values will always be dictated by one’s popularity not necessarily by their ability or stats. As more time passes you have to be more and more legendary/iconic to maintain relevance. And unfortunately there are only a handful of athletes who qualify….. in the realm of America’s pastime which is woven into the fabric of this country as more than just a “sport” Mays is one of those few imo.

I Understand You Get a Higher Premium When Selling PSA Graded Cards But I’ve Noticed That SGC Cards are Either Getting Higher Premiums on There Vintage Cards Than PSA or At least Catching Up With PSA.

Hey Graig, to start off, great video as always. My brother got me watching you. As for the question this week, I prefer SGC. Growing up in the same Era as you, as you mentioned we always looked in the Beckett Books/magazines to find value. BGC and PSA were the top tier. Since I have learned about SGC, I prefer SGC, especially the newer style. I like the tuxedo look. Ot makes your eyes direct to the card and blocks out the window effect. It looks sharp. I also have notice that value between PSA and SGC grades are very close by only a few dollars sometimes. But honestly I like SGC's Tuxedo look. More Sharpe and presentational. Also like the technology aspect on how they grade.

Great question on graders. I'm speaking on the perspective of a submitter vs buying single slabs. I collect a little bit of everything so it depends... Vintage cards under $1500 I go with SGC. I've always had fast turnaround with SGC and most recently a 7 business day turnaround door to door without any upcharges. I have been waiting on a PSA vintage order for 15 weeks as we speak. I understand this turnaround time isn't out of the ordinary for PSA, but its just way too long for me. The thought that I can be upcharged $75 on a fringe card valued ~$500 is crazy to me. PSA determining market value is very controversial to me, but I won't get into that topic. Cards valued over $1500 I use PSA regular service simply due to potential resale value and faster turnaround. Modern and 90s cards - PSA only. Turnaround has been very fast for PSA as of late and the cost/time ratio is simply > SGC. I find SGC 9.5 - SGC 10's are hard to sell. SGC has a niche with vintage, but sadly the overwhelming grader of choice is PSA for me. I recently had an issue with a 57 Ernie banks that was likely damaged by SGC during grading and their customer service has been nothing short of excellent. I have been loving SGC and want them to do well, but the potential price premium of PSA is hard to stay away from. If I can potentially extract additional value on a card that I'm on the fence on keeping long term, I'm grading it.
@MidLifeCards

That makes a lot of sense...that the era of the cards dictate the slab you like best.

I pulled out a Beckett price guide from 1995. Most of the second tier cards in a PSA 5 or 6 are worth the same as what the guide said 30 years ago. PSA and eBay have really changed the hobby. You can get almost any card you want whenever you want it for a reasonable price. It wasn't that way in 1990.

SGC is my strong preference. When I first started collecting in the early eighties, there were no grading companies. When I got back into the hobby about 12 years ago, I concentrated on higher end vintage cards. I preferred graded cards for the authentication factor. I feel the cards look better in the SGC holder. I also find that there are more high graded PSA cards that are off centered than with SGC. Currently I prefer to buy cards in SGC but sometimes I will buy one in a PSA holder because the card is harder to find in an SGC holder due to pop counts. For many higher end cards, there is a definite and significant premium for the PSA version. I believe that is primarily due to the PSA set registry. However, I don't mind this because I believe the percentage price increase over time should be the same, even though the initial PSA purchase price was higher. Plus my budget can afford more cards. In fact, if the price gap between the two continues to narrow (or if SGC finally introduces a set registry) I think the percentage investment return for SGC will be higher than for PSA. Although it may sound like I am an Investor, I am 80% a collector, 20% an investor.

Graig, it was awesome to hear all of these reasoned thoughts and predictions! Great food for thought! My favorite slab, and it is not even close, is the SCD (Sports Collectors Digest) slab. They don't grade anymore, but their slabs have the compactness of a PSA slab, the black insert like SGC, subgrades like BGS (but on the back of the slab), and a truly elegant silver label which emphasizes authenticity as much as grade. SCD slabs totally blow away all of the competition! Alas, they are hard to find, so I will only have a few in my collection! I used to prefer SGC, but now prefer PSA due to the compactness and taking up less space for storage. Nonetheless, the price and look of the card totally trump the slab for me! 😊👊

For someone to break even on a card, you need it to go up 20% of the value you bought it for. Investing in cards is not a sound way to invest. Dealers typically don't hold onto cards, they buy at lower comps and sell quickly for that 10/20% profit. Flipping, grading, and gambling is how you make money in this hobby. It is a hobby that you can acquire assets that have some value. I have hobbies like golf where it is entertainment, but a complete loss of cash. If you are someone young and really want to invest for your future, please don't think sports cards are the answer!

I might be a little biased here but I love Jackie so for the sake of me having an almost complete Jackie run I’m saying Jackie. I also love the comparison of Mantle/Mays runs. These are the things some may have to consider within the next 5 years if collecting to make a profit is their intended goal.

I prefer PSA over SGC because whenever I grade my cards it's only for the autograph authentication. That being said more people do prefer SGC for vintage card grading and for the rare instances that I'm picking up vintage cards that's not for autographs I want to make sure that it's legit with an accurate grade.

SGC all day, have sent in 6 submissions and they were all returned in less than two weeks. The gradings were fair some ups some downs but overall fair. Their price wins out, the one issue I did have was resolved instantly, so my experience with customer support was excellent. Last but not least I do love the black slabs so much more. Just keeping my fingers crossed for the future though, with the merger.

I have never sent a card in for grading. Any graded cards I own I bought that way. BUT....as I am getting older I’m thinking of thinning out my collection thus would like to have cards graded before I sell them. Also, in case something happens to me, my wife would have an easier time liquidating my collection if they were graded. Which grading company would I use? SCG. I have mostly prewar cards and SCG is more of a perfect fit. Also, I love the looks of the tuxedo.
@ACD1994
@ACD1994 3 месяца назад
That's a tough question to answer. I think for Pre-War there's a premium for both. I don't know what cards you have though. As much as some of us don't care for PSA. Their higher grades could fetch you good profits, but I do know SGC and Pre-War, is honestly one of their strengths...perhaps. Good luck. Hope it all works out.

Ok, so much here. 1) Thank you my friend. Wish we could have played that tourney together. We had to steal him and Pettitte back home for a couple years to get to the world series. By the way, your daughter has a ridiculously beautiful swing. Very jealous. 2) 4 collectors did a great job with Hobby Palooza. John did a yeoman’s task, and Sammy as well. Bravo everyone involved, and those who gave. 3) Great points you make and great responses on this last question. I believe the only reason most people didn’t reply Mantle is that he is already way at the top. I think they believe it more realistic for others to ‘play catch up’ than him to further separate himself into the stratosphere that he already owns. 4) I would probably answer SGC on this one other than the holders are too wide and do not fit in standard boxes without turning them slightly sideways. Huge pet peeve. And then there is PSA resale values. They are too tough now, but as you experienced in your SGC sub, they aren’t exactly handing out good grades willy-nilly either.

Hey Brent- great comment. I think me and Petty were the only ones who said, Mantle. Probably why they weren't shown. Now, that I think about it. Lol. Editing it to say: Mike's comment was featured. Great video - thanks for sharing! I agree, even if it is a hobby, values matter. Collect what you love - but understand, some of the cards you love will have a higher price - and there will be times you HAVE to buy a card, because you KNOW you will be able to sell it higher, so you can buy what you want. Short term, I think we will have a jump on Gibson and Mays, as people try to grab up some great stuff at lower prices to be able to resell higher later. The short term price increases will generate FOMO. And WOW - I got the first comment in LOL! As far as tour question - I personally hate slabs, but for resale...either PSA or SGC. HGA has a great concept - but has not taken off yet. Wait for PSA to buy them out.
