The weird thing is, Eggman was originally meant to be the hero, but he's embraced being a villain. Even when given the chance to do good, he simply prefers evil. Whether innocuously like in Sonic Boom, or drastically, like in the comics, Eggman is just plain bad.

I heard an interesting theory about that. Because gorillas have a lifespan of about 40 years, it's a one generation difference (father/son) between Jumpman and Mario, and a two generation difference (grandfather/grandson) between Cranky and Donkey. So there's probably a retired carpenter in New Donk City.

Same talking point between bowser and eggman. Eggman: I don't really see my actions as "evil". Bowser: Look I have a list right here of the things you've done and believe me it's a long list, but I'm not going to judge you for it. Because you got to own it as I have that we're evil. I tried conquering the universe. You enslave an alien race to power a mind control device. You've worked with sonic, I've worked with mario before. If it meant overcoming the greater evil, but I also worked with other villains. *whispers if you betray me or hurt my kids I will end you.* Eggman: what was that. Bowser: Oh that we worked with other villains before and when they try to betray us that no one will ever hear from them again.

To be fair, it would be much harder for eggman to do the whole "go good" thing because DK was allowed to step down as antagonist because we got THE antagonist in the form of Bowser. But Eggman is still THE antagonist of the Sonic universe so the dynamic wouldn't work because... well who would be the next primary antagonist?
