I remember I was buying a small critter carrier to pick up my hamster from a reputable breeder. When I was checking out, the pet store employee stopped me and said "hey! Looks like you're getting a hamster? I just wanted to point out that this is not an appropriate home for them, a 40 gallon aquarium would be much better!". I then told her I had a huge Niteangel enclosure set up and showed her some photos, she was ECSTATIC!! I told her how much I appreciated her concern and voicing herself about proper care to customers. All employees should be trained this way!

We recently bought a hamster for our son and because of your channel I knew what to do. We brought a small little carrier to the store when we got the hamster (the yellow lid critter keeper looking thing from petco). Luckily the store employee asked us and made sure this is not what we intended on keeping the hamster in, it was only for transport. I explained that we made our own enclosure (following your DIY enclosures using purebond plywood and an IKEA complement glass shelf as the window on the front) that was 900-1000 square inches approximately. He seemed surprised and acted like this was overkill, but it should be the norm.

i saw a thing where some pet smarts were literally THROWING AWAY ANIMALS. it’s was horrible. it’s against their rules, but somehow it still ended up happening. and honestly the problems with pet smarts is for other animals as well. for example, the beta fish. how can they leave beta fish sitting in tiny little containers and just leaving them there even when they pass away? it makes me so upset.

hey, I'm a petsmart employee! 70% of the time those videos are falsified to make it seem as if everyone who works in big chain pet stores are heartless. while I HATE corporate with all my heart for the policies they implement, to assume that all employees are the same is something I see often and it kinda sucks. i own a gecko and hammy who will live out their lives beautifully and implore others to do the same, but people rarely take my advice, especially when stores advertise smaller for cheaper.

I bought a hamster in September of 2020 and he recently passed away. He had a great life and lived to be 2.5 years old. He was in a 50 gallon aquarium and he had a 12 inch wheel. I have a 2.5-year-old Syrian in an Ikea Detolf. Sometimes, I feel bad that it's not bigger, but I couldn't provide something larger in this living space. People come over or if I'm not using a background for work on my webcam people are amazed that I have such a big space for "just one hamster". I always try to educate them, even if they're not a pet owner, about why giving them a suitable living space is necessary, hoping that it will raise awareness and hamster care will improve by getting the word out.

The wosrt part about pet stores is that their animals also come from mills and the majority of them are FULLY aware that the care they are recommending is not good care but they choose to do what will profit them the most which isnt good for the animal. But i beleive it is the pet stores as well as the brands as well as the owners faults that hamsters are being neglected. I put myself in this hamsters shoes and it was misery. Breaks my heart to even imagine what they go thru.

I've been working at a pet store for almost a year, and I'm STILL learning new things every day about each animal. Please do your own research because we are not specialists, most are learning as they go. The only animals I truly know enough about to give them their best life is a hamster and betta fish, because that's all I've done personal research on. Thankfully, I can deny sales on anything but fish. But any time someone asks me about hamsters I am more than happy to give them as many pointers and tips on how to save money but still give the hamster their best life, like suggesting to people to make cheap bin cages rather than spend a ton on a huge aquarium or tiny crittertrail. Or adding more bedding and spot cleaning instead of deep cleaning all the time. I've noticed the kinder you are when suggesting, the more likely they are to listen to you so be kind :)
@Pegettisauce
@Pegettisauce Год назад
I also work in a pet shop, thankfully we can deny sale on any item, even including accessories such as muzzles or cat carriers if the customer gives us reason to believe they will misuse them. My boss has backed me up any time I've denied a customer an item, and to be fair more customers are willing to listen to your advice when you're warning them of things. My biggest issue is people trying to buy live smallies for their small kids (i Once had a a woman trying to buy a rabbit for her 4 year old!) and refusing to listen to my warnings about why that would be inappropriate for the kid and the animal. Thankfully, absolute refusal is always still an option here, our shop is very big on the idea that it is the animals, not the customers wants, that come first. Dont know if I can say the same for other shops in the company 😅

Educating people with proper hamster care is so important. I cant believe how much i got wrong when i bought my daughter a hamster a few years ago, wrong size cage, wheel, not a great diet for the hamster and even a ball for it to run around in. Thankfully i fell in love with this little hammo and started researching on what they actually needed. Just because these animals are small doesnt mean that they dont need the care that other pets get. Cheap to buy doesnt mean cheap to own. I think everyone is to blame apart from the innocent animal. Research is key, if you cant provide what they need dont get one.

It’s makes me so frustrated when people don’t research how to properly take care of there pets! I don’t like it when people just go and get one like how hard is it to learn how to take care of a hamster! And Victoria even makes it easier than ever to learn, people need to try harder. Thanks Victoria for teaching me everything I need to know! I had a dwarf hamster that lived to be around 2.5 years and passed away from cancer the day before Easter this year and thx to Victoria he lived a wonderful life❤️

This is a great breakdown Victoria, it really shows why it's so difficult to change things. If everyone shares part of the blame then no one accepts the blame. If only one group was to blame it would be so much easier to apply pressure and change the behavior. I also want to add additional people to blame, and those are people who write articles online sharing ''hamster care'' and giving misinformation or outdated information. When people google hamster care they usually get terrible advice in the results. I would also blame social media companies for not removing content that shows animal abuse after so many people point it out. If you search for hamsters on RU-vid the videos that often pop up are unsafe maze videos, or if you search how to bathe a hamster you will get a video of a person showing how to bathe a hamster in water. When people start using things like chat GPT it will become even worse and because it writes it's text in a believable way people will not bother to research more. A while ago I asked chat GPT about hamsters and the info it provided had some important things wrong, like hamster balls. Or it would give me one kind of info the first time and then a few months later something completely different. I definitely agree with you that people who care about proper hamster care should if possible make content giving advice, tips and showing their hamster care as an example. Maybe if we can't remove bad content we can bury it in a lot of new content we make ourselves. That's one of the reasons I still post. I know this requires effort and time but I have been seeing more of new content creators lately and I'm a bit optimistic. 😊 Sorry for the essay. 😅

1. Impulsive buying. It goes without saying why this is the reason even 'good' people, combined with guessing about proper care thinking 'it can't be that complicated right'? Solution: Government regulations towards sales and labeling products as proper for specific tasks, eg. if something is advertised as hamster care, it needs to fulfill specific norms (minimum floor space, wire spacing etc) 2. People being dumb and careless, AKA: "There is a reason that coffee companies have to put 'caution hot coffee' ". The reason is, people in general are dumb and careless, even more so now than ever. Solution: Again, government regulations. Same way you can't sell alcohol or tobacco to minors and the seller needs to know that and ensure it is followed. 3. People that just don't care. Well, in this case there is nothing anyone can do, people will get pets for tiktok views, clout or to make money in various ways. Now, think about it. You got regulations about having your dogs vaccinated, keeping them on a leash and many other related to plethora of animals, but why not to every one that is legal? That includes many other beyond hamsters. Of course, you can and should educate and be respectful in informing people about proper care, spreading the word, but that's just a band-aid on a heavy bleeding wound.

It hurts to see that hammy in such a small cage. My own dwarf lived in a carrier before I got her, it was around the same size the first kritter keeper was, maybe a bit smaller and the wheel was smaller than 4.5 inches. Just had a "argument" with someone on facebook rodent group because they didn't want to accept that their hamster's cage and wheel were too small for a hamster. They told me to get a life in the end and that I was rude, even though I always do my best to not come across as rude. People are so difficult. 😫

Seriously that person just did it for attention. Some people do not do research how to properly care for animals. This is just sad... I feel so sorry for that hamster. The cage is so small... If I would know who it was and their personal information I would let the animal police know they do not give proper care and living conditions. That hamster deserves a better life. Pet stores and brands should be ashamed to offer non suitable inclosures. Due to them producing and offering it and stores to buy them and sell them is just what keeps this present. It is frustrating... I wish one day brands, producers and stores will get a fine if they sell or produce inproper objects and inclosures.

Nothing can be done. I have dealt with HUNDREDS of people who use the "its just a ___" or the "I don't care..." or my personal favorite "its my kids job to take of it." I place 90% of blame on people too lazy to educate themselves. If you would do your research beforehand you would not have to rely on a 2 hour lecture session from me because that person actually has 0 idea of what they are doing and are asking 2,000 questions. And if research was done before it wouldn't matter if companies made the products, no one would buy them if they truly understood how garbage they are. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

I personally say it's 100% the owner. If you're going to buy a pet, it's YOUR responsibility to do your research, and after doing so, letting your wallet do the talking. If people would not buy crappy small plastic hamster enclosures, nobody would still sell them. And if you say "but the store told me this would be ok. Sorry, but the person that's looking to make a sale is not a good source of information by default. If this would be a dollhouse i might blame the brand or the store, but we're talking about a living thing here, and in that case the owner is the one that the responsibility goes to.

fun fact the "caution: contents hot" on the cups was actually a result of a lawsuit after a mcdonalds served extremely hot coffee to a customer that spilled on her lap and caused her very severe burns. this made people aware of how hot the coffee they were serving/being served actually was, as no one really knew the dangers before this incident, as well as to cover the company incase this happened again.

Most would assume that it is common sense that coffee is hot though which is what I was trying to get at! Common sense isn't all that common and which is why products need to have specific descriptions, especially on something like a small travel carrier that it shouldn't be for full-time use!

I feel a lot of the people who blame store staff almost entirely have never worked in the trade or in a range of stores. There is soo much the staff in the store can do and they have to work with way too many species, the pay isn't high enough to ensure the staff are properly trained. Most people I know in the industry no longer really keep pets, why? Because of the customers and it is a kind of burn out. Many customers have such a judgement of store staff which doesn't make it surprising when staff quit. But I'm not sure customers want the educated staff because they would have to pay more and the amount of issues with customers who are completely wrong but think they are right I feel they would rather have someone who doesn't know. Seen many customers also lie about their setups or have completely no idea what they have or the setup they have. I'd often get customers who bought the stuff from Pets at Home then come to one of the stores I've worked at for the animal which for fish is just a nightmare because they usually came the day after they got the tank.

Victoria I have a question for you: So I got these colored wood chews and I posted a video of me adding them to my cage( don’t worry I have a bin cage) and I got a comment saying that colored wood chews are not safe so I quickly took them out. So I was wondering if they are safe or not. Please answer

I used to have hamsters back then when I was younger. Like around 2016-2019. I wish I could've taken better care of them. I knew nothing about how to properly take care of them. I feel pretty bad. I had 1 syrian hamster and 1 dwarf one time. My dwarf hamsters cage was so small too. There was very little space. I used to wake both of them up and let them roam around a room together. They got into fights and I liked it. I was a complete idiot back then. My syrian hamsters cage was also very small. I had no wheel for her and very little bedding. She always climbed and chewed on the bars. I even put her inside one of those stupid plastic balls. To this day I don't have any hamsters, but I like to watch your videos because they are pretty interesting. I am also thinking about getting hamsters in the future. Some day I will and will take better care of them. Right now I'm not. My parents tried to buy a hamster but I told them not to because they hardly ever listen to me when it comes to pet care. So it's best if they don't buy any. They also tried to buy a hamster for my baby brother which was a TERRIBLE idea. I told them that they are not TOYS. To this day I don't have any, but I will buy a hamster in the future. It's best if I don't have any right now until my channel is monetized. I have a dog and they HARDLY listen to me when I try to take care of her. I just gave her up. I wanted her to get the best food and not those low quality brands with food coloring and low quality ingredients. My mom bought her kibble 'n bits which is a HORRIBLE dog food. The price on the better foods might scare you, but the ingredients on purina and pedigree brands will scare you more. This is what I'm talking about. They hardly ever listen to me. I just want to give away my dog. Everytime I want to take proper care of a pet, I can't because of my parents. I try to explain them the nicest way but they don't listen which is why I don't want a hamster right now.

I’m a year late and I have a very very similar travel carrier, It’s ,maybe haft the size of the one in the video, and my Syrian hamster was half the size of it. ( when I got her I hadn’t seen an Syrian hamster in real life. That’s why) I felt horrible due to how bored she was in it I can’t imagine something double the size being a cage. It looks around the size of her sand bath.

Hi Victoria! I've been watching your videos for ages and love them! You cover such important topics and explain hamster care so well. You've helped me have better hamster care too! Two years ago I had a 450 square inch critter trail, which I then upgraded to a bin cage because my hamster was stressed. Now, I have a different (dwarf) hamster, named Mona, and she's in an ikea detolf. She's a rescue from all creatures rescue and is super sweet! I also have an aquarium (the exact same as yours) with a few amino shrimp, zebra danios, and otocinclus (I've had the fish over 2 years now!) Good luck with your tank!

The whole point is that Harry is no extraodrinary person (his name is supposed to point to that, compare it with other names in the book), at least not because of his powers or the prophecy - Neville could have been chosen, it was a coincidence. Harry chose to do what's right, but he didn't have to at all. He's a blank slate at the beginning and we see that he's not sure what his place is in this new world - and don't forget that in the muggle world he was a nobody, got bullied at school and at home for who he was. He often says that he's no hero, all of his escapes were due to luck, and he believes it causing him to have many doubts throughout the books. As years pass by, we see him taking more and more initiative, culminating when Dumbledore dies and all responsibility is passed on to him. I feel that if he was too smart or sassy his first years at school, he would fall into the trap of "not seeming like a kid", because honestly, they really aren't that special and unique so young, they really just copy what others are doing - look at real life kids 😂

I think all should be blamed. Owners for not doing research, brands for making the bad items and pet stores for selling them
@LESREID2
@LESREID2 10 месяцев назад
The owner is to blame in my opinion. Especially if others have told you better. You see everyone saying the same thing and still CHOOSE to do the wrong thing. Companies need to just STOP making cages that aren’t an adequate size.

I've been following a few pet vloggers from my country. Most of them own hamsters and I thought their way of keeping them is great. But as I stumbled upon your videos I've learned a lot and realized how most of them are just using their pets for views and likes. They house multiple hamster in one tiny container thinking their hamster need a "friend". I even watched a video that they uploaded where two hamster were fighting and they titled it as "cute hamsters playing sweetly" and it got viral. After a few weeks one of her hamster went missing and she assumed that it escaped but i bet the other hamster ate it since she found few furs. Most of them also dont give their hamsters the necessary thing such as wheel etc. They have no idea on what they were doing but they still continue to do it. Since they were famous people will assume that what they are doing was right. They even have the audacity to "teach" based on how they take care their own hamsters. I'm really thankful that Victoria never gets tired on educating people about proper hamster care. Ps. PLEASE do some proper research on how to take care a certain pet before getting one. And please don't trust everything that you see in the internet find a reliable source.

Thank you so much for making this presentation. It truly is a shame that animals suffer due to the careless neglect, greed, ignorance and lack of compassion that people have. That TikTok video just proves it. Wake up people, animals feel and suffer just like we do. Be mindful of where they come from in nature. Nothing is meant to be stuck in a tiny plastic cube for any amount of time. 🐹❤

As someone who works at a pet shop (won't say which one because I'm not into mixing social media and work lol) I completely agree! I'm in the UK but everything you said basically applies here, too. It's not a requirement for us to have any qualifications in animal care and the training is inadequate so if you don't do your own research you will definitely be giving customers bad advice. We also don't sell any suitable cages in store and we get a lot of customers buying hamsters without having bought the cage first (unfortunately having a cage already set up isn't a requirement) so they have to get one of the shitty in-store ones. So yes, pet shops are part of the problem. Brands are too, as mentioned we don't sell any decent cages because none of the brands we stock sell decent cages. I've recently adopted a hamster and I've had to have both the cage & food for her imported essentially because I can't find anywhere here that sells decent seed mix, nor cages. Finally, owners are to blame too! I'm one of those employees who does my best to steer people in the right direction but unfortunately hamsters and golfish attract some really annoying people. Literally this morning we had a customer attempt to buy a hamster who then revealed she planned to take the hamster in the cardboard box to the nearby cafe with her while she sat down and had coffee!! Insane!! (she was denied sale because of that). I try to suggest getting a good cage but I've yet to actually convince anyone, they always say it's too expensive or large for the space they have and just get the smallest cage they can get away with basically. I might start mentioning to them that both the Blue Cross and RSPCA don't adopt out hamsters to people who have less than a 100cmx50cm enclosure to see if that guilts them enough into considering a larger cage

You probably won’t see this. But hey Raechel I’m 12 and I got my first hamster a month ago. I researched on how to take care of hamsters for 3 years before I got one. She’s a grey and white teddy and she’s really sweet. She lets me feed her but won’t let me pick her up. Do u have any ideas of how to get her used to me enough to let me pick her up. I see in some of ur videos they crawl up ur hand and I really want my hammy to trust me like that. Also I LOVE ur videos!!

It really is a pity for the life of that hamster seriously it's raging that he buys animals on a whim and worst of all in the conditions that he has, that is, the ignorance of keeping a hamster there is that he is really a person without a brain because that is humanity is crap every day with the animals that really rage greetings from Chile 💝

Commenting at the start of the video: it's owners... sorry for not politely not offending anybody. It's always owners/consumers... we 'demand' things and companies just respond by selling us things which we've demanded. This is true in everything, not just hamster care. One example is videogames: consumers demand better and better graphics, even at the cost to gameplay or hardware limitations, so the industry responds by making games with crazier graphics. And then that is a reflection on a changing consumer demographic: ie. in the old days videogames were seen as quite a niche hobby, with only a few consumers... now EVERYBODY is into videogames, leading to bad decisions from producers... but it leads to good stuff as well! Commenting at the end of the video: agree with everything you say, you've done some great work on consumer & pet care, AS USUAL, hahah. To echo many commenters on the comments section: thank you for being awesome! Always vote with your dollar! :D

I would add 2 additional thoughts to this: Couldn’t concerned people write or call the Humane Society/ASPCA, to push for a developed, written set of standards for Hamster (and other animals for that matter) Care? And then push for laws to be developed. Contacting elected representatives, maybe ? To better understand what constitutes neglect? Nowadays, action is taken against pets being left outside in cold weather. These initiatives are some future steps. With enough like minded people, it will happen for hamsters- and other animals kept as pets 👍
