Despite Liverpool fans best wishes, Jürgen Klopp can’t be Liverpool manager forever. He has been at the club since 2015, making him the longest serving manager currently in the Premier League. The German is also being linked with the Germany national team job following Euro 2024.
But while Liverpool fans may struggle to consider life after Klopp, the opening in the Anfield dug-out could lead to some interesting tactical developments and improvements.
Jon Mackenzie explores three possible new managers that could be in the frame to become head coach on the red half of Merseyside.

What you said about Alonso's wingback system is pretty much what Klopp is doing at the moment. When Trent goes up, Ibu/Matip covers the area in behind, and there's a lot of positional rotation in the wings and right midfield area. Robbo stays relatively further back than previous seasons.

That concept of space by Nagelsmann is interesting. I noticed something similar with Poch when he was at Spurs for a few years. The closer your teammates are to each other, the quicker you can play though, and theoretically, the more opportunities you'll create. It kind feels the opposite to how we see managers like Pep play, with spacing out as much as possible, and trying to break down the defense through attrition (which can be difficult at times).

Another important aspect a manager should have is MAN MANAGEMENT !! Just for an example: Mane hit his teammate, and had a fallout with the team and etc so he's someone who's hot head and in Liverpool he had Salah (same as Sane) but Klopp managed them so well that didn't affect relationship or game on the pitch.

Klopp will be at Liverpool for many years to come but in this hypothetical scenario, we would have to take into consideration the squad building that is happening rn. For example a system with two midfielders when you have 8 or 9 players fighting for that spot would not work. This squad is built for a 3 man midfield.

i don't think manangers are put in place to deploy the same tactics as they did at their previous teams. i think it's more about play style and the managers ability to solve problems with the given players. i think the analysis falls short in the sense that you want to replicate the lineup and formation from their previous teams, rather than having the new manager use his style and problem solving. example: you compare the wing backs; trent and frimpong, you probably deploy them in the same position (wing back) but you wouldn't deploy them in the same way because they offer different skills. frimpong is more direct and speedy, therefor he is more efective played wide. you want him take take players on and make runs wide and behind. trent is looking to play a deeper role so that he can find the pass in behind, so at liverpool the wing back would behave differently. i don't thinking coaching is very heavy on the formations anymore, rather on how you adjust the positions in the formation. so i think you should rather look at how the managers play style and philosophy would influence the team, rather than the formational discipline.

@@Mrwhatsmyname10 I would note that while Mick Beale had a very successful time at Rangers, he won nothing and wound up getting sacked after one full season I believe...Many managers rely on Assistant managers to bring that side of the game that they can't. For example, a manager who is a tactician might need an assistant who is good at man management and vice versa. Precious few managers can be exemplary in both. With Gerrard, like you said, tactically he might be weak, but he's a born leader and can inspire men. At Villa when he allegedly lost the dressing room, that was the death knell for his time there. If he can partner with a good tactician as his assistant I see no reason why he can't do well

in the Xabi system you could easily have Szobozlai in the supporting role because youve essentially got 2 elite playmakers on the right hand side which would undoubtedly create space for other players but also provide a huge amount of attacking threat along the right half of the pitch. Szobo also has played as a wide midfielder before and shows a strong level of competence in dribbling and high pace along with a strong finishing ability

Nagelsmann's stock must be decreasing with Germany's struggles under him. De Zerbi this year isn't quite the same as last. Which leaves Xabi and his special clause for his old teams. Ancelotti has extended his contract with Real, so they may not be in the running for Xabi this off-season (but you never know). It's possible that Tuchel doesn't survive at Bayern. So Alonso to Liverpool may not be so straightforward, unless FSG dusts off the 2015 playbook used to get Klopp.

i dont think the players we have will be a problem with a new manager, we have a defence that could end up as a 5 back with the fullbacks obviously being good offensively, we could play with dm’s and with 10’s in midfield or a flat 3 then the forwards we have 3 players who can play striker and 2 who can play out wide. Basically what im saying is we have players who can play in any position, its not like we NEED to play this current system its just thats what klopp likes so we do it

I think a 4-1-2-1-2 narrow diamond in the mid. This would favor a more positional approach while playing Salah and Nunez up front, this would give Arnold and Roberston the chance to play up while the centre mids drop back. I think attacking mid can rotate between, Diaz, Szoboszlai, and Jota depending on who you're playing. Pivot could change between Mac Allister and Thiago. My opinion of course.

In Xabi's system, the solution is clear - play a front 2 instead of a 3. Use Szobo as a 10, covering and interchanging with Alexander-Arnold. Salah right forward, with literally any of gakpo/nunez/Diaz/jota to his left. The double pivot could consist of Macallister + Gravenburch for example. What I like about this system is it offers a lot of positional versatility throughout the 90 minutes. The only downside is that, in relation to this current Liverpool squad, the depth is in the forward and midfield options, the defense is lacking in depth, which makes it hard to justify sacrificing a current forward/midfielder, for a defender, in order to play a different, fresher, tactical system.

Great video as per usual! The only thing I would say is I think Xabi Alonso is going to be the Real Madrid manager next season. Even if he was to become Liverpool manager I think he would tweak his tactics to make sure the wingers flourish, as they have abundance of attacking talent on the wings. Nunez, Diaz, Jota etc. This would better suit the the rigours of the Premier League, which is of course different to the Bundesliga, and he would be coaching the great players he would have at his disposal (rather than having to buy a whole new attack).

Xabi Alosno would be the most sensible choice for Liverpool but, once Carlo Ancelotti leaves, Real Madrid will surely approach him with the job offer which would be really difficult for him to turn down...😅

Under Alonso's system, you could put Szobo in either of the two wide attacking roles and allow Gravenberch or Bajcetic to operate in the double-pivot. Still though, not looking forward to Klopp leaving

think szoboszlai whould be perfect for that left forward role where hes got that freedom similar to the role he plays for hungary and then can have a jones macalister double pivot. as for the salah issue i think trent is very different to frimpong and wont be used in the exact same way. trent would be the one droping into midfield offering support whilst salah gets into the box. at the end of the day xabi would be amazing for us and whilst klopp leaving will be awful its gonna happen at some point.

16:16 That is because you didn't watch Leverkusen last season, so you don't remember that Xabi used to have a fast-paced left-footed right winger playing together with Jeremie Frimpong: Moussa Diaby. Diaby didn't play a support defensive role, our "right wing" is playing different this season because we have two 10's on the wings, instead of actual wingers. When we did play with actual wingers, the "Jeremoussa" duo carried our team, with 9G/8A for Diaby and 8G/7A for Frimpong. Xabi potentialized Diaby making the French do a Salah-esque run, running from the right flank to the right half-space, carrying the ball to shot with his left foot. Also, making TAA mirror Frimpong's play is kinda of a waste too, as Jeremie stays so high on the pitch that he doesn't need to participate on the play making, he just stays forward, waits the ball, runs really fast and creates danger. Plus, you repeatedly said that Alexander-Arnold loves to go into the right half-space, which is something Frimpong doesn't do at all, as he had Moussa Diaby and now Jonas Hofmann to occupy that space for him, obviously doing different roles on that area.

i hope another 5 years of klopp just until Salah and VVD (probably Ali too) retirements ceremony at Anfield. after that, i wish either De Zerbi or Xabi would take over. i would ride that highs and lows.

Great vid but tactically part 3 was super weak, which is odd coming from Jon. Szoboszlai in a double-pivot with Alexis? Saying the team would miss someone to play "as Wirtz", with Mac Allister and Szobo (and Gakpo) on the squad? Odd, odd.

1:20 Liverpool's system was not Good enough to compete at the highest level. What a phenomenal joke. Winning CL, PL, finishing 2nd with the highest number of points from any league (97), doing the double 2 years ago (couldve been a quadruple with more luck). 2 CL Final in the recent years... That is honnestly disrespecting Liverpool at that point. And I'm not even à Liverpool fan.

Perfect analysis of a hypothetical situation which will come to rise at some point in the future. Question is, where will these three candidates be when that day arrives? Alonso seems the best pick of the bunch at the moment. No matter what, Klopp will definitely want to sign off with a bang before he departs.

Great analysis. Hmm, I'd take RdZ or Alonso, but I'm of the mind Brighton wouldn't let RdZ go to a Premier League rival (yes, they do currently have the status to declare that). He's also a bit of a walking red card. Alonso, I'd be worried he'd be the sentimental pick but can't argue he's doing great things with Leverkusen and would probably shade it for me. Nagelsmann's star has faded somewhat. Any of the three have big boots to fill.

@@aotea6983De Zerbi has famously made his opinions about "bigger" clubs public. He is incredibly anti-football conglomerates and prefers smaller team structures where he feels closer to the players and able to establish connections with fans. He would more than likely not want to leave, let alone force his way out
