Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad is out! So, who would we drop for the final 26? Marcus and Luke discuss that on today’s Lions Watch.
Plus, a listener asks perhaps the biggest question heading into the tournament: how can England get the best out of Phil Foden? Marcus explains why playing Foden and Bellingham together isn’t another Frank Lampard-Steven Gerrard problem. And do we find ourselves agreeing with Paul Merson?!

I really don’t understand the obsession with Bellingham having to start further forward. That’s not his position and he has less of an influence on the game there, he goes through large parts of games being relatively anonymous. Madrid did it out of necessity, not out of choice.

I think playing Foden on the right and moving Saka to the left gives better defensive cover to what I assume will be Joe Gomez, and also puts Foden in his most played position and allows him to cut in and hit those deadly curling shots that he has near enough perfected.

I agree with the emphasis on wanting both Foden and Belligham to be high and central, and thought it was intereesting you didn't see a way to stay defensively solid doing so. I suggest looking to form a 325 in possession, but defend in a 451. This means one of the 4 defenders inverting into midfield on the ball. I'd love to see Trent do this from left back, spending most of the the game in midfield with Rice. At times Stones has been the one to step into midfield at City. Gomez has from the right or left. So by making whichever 1 defender transition to midfield, you enable Bellingham and Foden as double attacking mids either side of Kane, getting between lines while your wingers keep the width. Leaving 3 on defend and 2 on support behind the front 5 is a solid rest defense too.

Midfield options for the more than likely right 8/6 role: Mainoo - a kid who’s broken into an awful united midfield and shone in a team that’s been awful and so open defensively it’s embarrassing to watch, scored a few nice goals and is very composed. Gallagher - the Chelsea captain in another team that’s underachieved and been dreadful this year, runs about a lot though. TAA - a guy that’s won everything, the most creative player we have in terms of passing, used to get 15/16 assist a season from right back. I know which one I would pick. Ultimately I think Rice is good enough to play as a lone 6, Bellingham can do what he wants, Trent will sometimes be alongside rice, sometimes move into the right channel and whip some in, that’s what I would do anyway
@troytheboy1985

@@troytheboy1985 firstly, *than and secondly, no he didn’t. You can’t pick your team on the basis that a player might get injured. Ultimately it depends what you want, your tactics and the rest of the team, I don’t think there is going to be much creativity in the rest of the team, the full backs aren’t going to be bombing on and whipping on crosses, Bellingham is much more of a goal threat than a he is creative, same with Kane, foden and saka could be but you need to get the ball to them in dangerous areas, Trent would be the most creative player by a mile in that team and that’s why I’d put him in, if we play Gallagher I think we’ll be so blunt in attack.

I would better call and play Livramento than Gomez as left back because Tino has better pace and skills but also a tough defender who stop Mbappe. I don't know what made Gomez rated highly by Southgate by the fact Gomez has never trusted by Klopp and rarely plays while also has yet to reach the level of him some years ago. Southgate's ability on spotting players ability and potential seems to be very bad and Southgate is calling players based on their reputation and the reputation of the club they play.

Someone like Southgate if hired to manage PL club then that club will immediately relegated. I don't know what made the Fa think Southgate is a great manager while tactically is very bad let alone his coaching ability is not better than Sutton Utd coaching staff. And then his scouting/spotting ability is ridiculously worse than any EFL L2 Scouts.

@ConorF727 might point is more around the hypocrisy over Brainthwaite and Quansah being to inexperienced yet Mainoo has probably played less than 10 full games of football. Honestly the sensational idea that throwing more attacking players into the starting 11, whilst disregarding a defensive structure is laughable. What other credible international team would set up like this? Pointless trying to shoehorn everyones favourite in form player into the team and hoping it works only to then blame Southgate when it doesn't. As unpopular as it sounds Southgate needs to select players in their familiar positions and utilise the squad to reduce the effects of fatigue at the end of a long season. Rice is a fantastic player but the recent matches against France (1-2) , Belgium (2-2) and Brazil (0-1) have shown that when he plays alone as a 6 England lack control and end up chasing the ball. A 2nd defensive minded midfielder to play alongside Rice would fix this problem and give the 4 attacking players more freedom. Southgate's task is to find that midfielder. It's as simple as that.
@Iron-Bridge

Agreed. A second no 6 or no 8 type midfielder who can work a double pivot with Rice would be beneficial for England.
